Hootie is all stopped up from a URI. Vet suggested smelly cat food - but what brand is the stinkiest? I need to get some regular canned tuna, apparently it's smellier than the albacore I usually buy for myself. Vet also suggested baby food, said Beacham was more aromatic than Gerber. But who sells Beacham? Help please!

I think it might be Beech-nut? It says Walmart not sure if you shop there or not. I have never heard of Beacham brand but it might be something new. I buy baby food sweet potatoes to make bird bread but I have always bought Gerber for that.

Anything with sardines, Val. They're always stinkier than tuna. What about venison, rabbit or duck? Gamey stuff. Hmnn. Can you get plain old sardines? All I've seen are ones in assorted sauces or olive oil.  |

Baby food is not stinky at all. Yeah, I don't get that suggestion. Babies like bland stuff. I've yet to meet the baby who'd nom on mashed sardines. Maybe the vet meant it's so soft that he'll just kind of lap it up without the effort of chewing. |

Can't you get sardine cat food?
If you can't, I don't see why olive oil would be bad. It's stinky too. Buy a tin of oil ones and a tin of water ones.

Did Hoots get a Covenia injection or oral antibiotics?
He probably doesn't feel good so he might not have an appetite so don't be alarmed if he doesn't chow down right away. The main thing is that he stays hydrated. The appetite will return when he starts to feel better after the antibiotics kick in.
No olive oil sardines. Get the ones in water if you get sardines.

He's been drinking water and prefers to drink from the kitty fountain. If I crate him, he can't use the fountain. Will it hurt if Trixie manages to sneak some of the sardines when I'm not looking? I'm working from home the next few days since the vet said to keep an eye on him. |

I have always used Bumble Bee sardines in water. There aren't really any serious bones that I have ever noticed. It kinda just all mushes up.

No, it won't hurt Trixster to sneak a few sardines. I wouldn't bother crating him. Let him get back to his normal life.
He definitely needs to hang at the water fountain. Not eating is not as bad as not drinking.

He's diabetic so he drinks a lot of water. Fortunately he's been doing that a lot since we got home. I'll go get some sardines, then, and try giving him a little bit every so often (maybe every 4 hrs until he starts to nibble? or more often?). He likes to be brushed while he eats so I can try that too, maybe tomorrow though. I might pop up the smaller crate, cover it, for a nice dark spot, in case he wants to hide but still be around us. They often sleep in the small traveling softside cat carrier so he might like the open crate. He's also weird for a cat - when he's sick, he lets me know and he tends to stick close to me. Hence the idea of the small crate cave by my desk.

Sardines work well on top of regular food. Its what I do when one of mine is sick & doesnt want to eat.
Gets them to eating but they get the full nutrition of the regular food.
The bones in sardines are tiny and just kind of dissolve so no issues there.
I usually get Brunswick, they are in water with no salt. You can get them at most groceries or WalMart.

No Brunswick or Bumble Bee sardines at my closest neighborhood WM so I bought the two brands in water they did have. Hoots didn't want any, but he has been drinking water all night. His breathing is better too. He's still stopped up but I don't hear any wheezing and he's not breathing as hard or labored. Just still stopped up. I'm hoping that's improvement.

kritter, Hootie ignored the sardines. TBH, they really aren't all that stinky. Would it hurt him any if I "force fed" him? I have a syringe for just that, but I don't know how to fix the food. Maybe take some canned pate, add water, blend a bit until smooth and gravy-ish and drop a little at a time in his mouth? I also have some kitty food in broth that I can just use the broth part, and I can get some plain chicken broth. Or regular canned tuna and use the tuna broth. He ate very little Sunday (a few cat treats and lapped up the gravy from some gravy cat food), and absolutely no food yesterday.

Hootie was probably under stress will the trip and his defenses and immunity were down. Trixie could catch it but she is younger, healthy, and will probably fight the virus off without medication. URI is very common in tiny kittens because their immunity is not full blown and they are prone to virus infections. An untreated URI is how Dixie and Lucy lost their eyes. You caught the infection early and Clavamox will help Hootie recover his immunity defenses. Just give it a little time until Clavamox kicks in and does it's job. |

With some adult cats it will cause more stress which would not be a good thing. I do force feed small kittens because their weight is usually an issue and they can't afford even a drop of a few ounces. When Hootie was at the vet yesterday, did they weight him? Has he lost a considerable amount of weight? I would be more concerned about dehydration which doesn't seem to be an issue since he did get fluids yesterday and he is drinking water. Right now he doesn't feel like eating just like humans usually have no appetite with a severe cold. As the Clavamox helps him to fight off the URI virus, he will feel better and his appetite will return. You could mix some chicken or turkey baby food with a tiny bit of water and see if he will lap it up. Use only the straight chicken or turkey, not the stuff mixed with vegetable or whatever the other stuff they mix in with it. Or broth from cat food would be good. If Hootie will let you syringe feed him then that would be OK but don't force him and stress him out. I know you are desperate for him to eat but it is still early in the game. He is on meds which is the best thing for him and it takes a day or 2 for them to kick in. |

Too late, I fed him before you posted. I made a cream of tomato soup texture mix in the blender, water and some purina canned kidney food the vet wanted me to try to get him to eat (just one can, not long term). He let me feed him a little over 2 cc before resisting, then showed some interest in the bowl of the gravy after that but didn't eat any of it. He went from just under 12 lb to 9 lb with the diabetes, and this past week lost 2 more lbs to 7+ lbs. So yeah - a good bit of weight loss.
The sardines were a bust, for now. Even Trixie looks at the sardines for a minute before nibbling on them. Both Hootie and Trixie are fussy about which fish cat foods they eat so I'm not really surprised. They both really like turkey, and he really likes the chicken & liver FF combo. I may make a gravy texture of the C&L later today and try that.

He came in for water and laid down on in the hall, so I put him up on his summer blanket on my desk. He decided to stay and snooze with me and Trixie. He let me brush him and purred a bit, so maybe that's good. He did a few lazy tail swirls while I brushed him. His breathing is better, deeper and not as shallow/fast as yesterday. He's 17, so you can probably guess why I'm so worried about him.

I didn't think "virus" when you said the Clavamox wouldn't cure it, so that makes sense. Trixie is eating as usual and seems fine. She does keep going in the back room or under the bed (depends on where Hootie is). Maybe she's checking on him. The not eating/no food is an issue with his diabetes. If he gets too much insulin and no food, he can go into diabetic shock (or whatever it's technically called). Vet had me go to half dose until he's eating normally, and I'm still testing his blood sugar. That's why I resorted to trying to get a little food in him via the syringe. Even a little bit of food helps with the insulin/blood sugar levels. |

I've had success with canned pink salmon for non-eating cats. And it has lots of flavorful liquid in the can. The bones are soft but I remove them anyway.

It normally lies dormant but can break out (as an URTI) if they are debilitated or stressed. It normally runs its course in about ten days. Antibiotics prevent secondary infections. |

Mu old vet for my male cat that had a urinary infection told me to avoid any pet food with any fish or cheese in it for a neutered male cat - it brings on urinary infection. This guy was wonderful so I completely trusted him. He also told me to give him a 1/2 a tablet of 500mg vitamin C to break up the urinary infection. He was one of those vets that would even come to your house. I always went to his office, but my neighbor had him visit her for her dogs.
My Pepe never had another one and he lived for 20 years! He was a big male Persian cat.
I would give the cat some chicken and if he's not on antibiotic give a little bit C if you have it (or ask the vet you use if thats ok). If you do give him fish, mackerel smells strong and I have given it to strays.

Um, he has a respiratory infection, not urinary. He sees to be peeing fine (thank goodness). He's getting some canned kidney function food today, that the vet wanted him to have. I'll switch to chicken & liver next, now that I figured out how to make it gravy-like. That's one of Hootie's favorite flavors. I wonder, though, if vitamin C would help any with the respiratory infection?
