Oh shoot, I thought it was UTI - am not sure about the respiratory infection, haven't dealt with that one. Sorry, Val.

The sardines were a bust, for now. Even Trixie looks at the sardines for a minute before nibbling on them. Both Hootie and Trixie are fussy about which fish cat foods they eat so I'm not really surprised. They both really like turkey, and he really likes the chicken & liver FF combo. I may make a gravy texture of the C&L later today and try that. Jeez, you didn't tell us you were dealing with weirdos, Val! lol. Total opposite to my cats, who all prefer anything to the chicken and turkey foods. If they're not that keen on fish to start with, the sardines probably horrified them! (((Hootie n Val)))

My guys all like the FF fish and shrimp flavor (even Quincy will sometimes eat it and he is not a wet food eater). To my eye/nose it is smelly, nasty stuff. It has a darker/royal blue label and is a flaked formula that mixes well with water so it becomes like the tuna water. FF also makes little packets of broth only foods he might like right now if he's drinking. I'd personally avoid human chicken broth unless you can get a no/very low sodium version.
Sorry but the suggestion to try the kidney formula food to get him to eat is weird. IME transitioning cats who need rx food onto it is a pita involving lots of doctoring and disguising it, although yes it does smell bad.

Vets make a buttload of money pushing that prescription crap. Its like no matter what is wrong with an animal this crap food will fix it.
There is even a "Calming" prescription food that they tried to push to fix Kenya's yanking her hair out disorder. Kenya couldn't be more calm unless she was in a coma. One of the office girls gave me a free bag that another customer brought back because her cat wouldn't eat. I fed it to Kenya and she ate it between bouts of licking her fur out. Needless to say, it did not do a thing for her except make her gain a little more weight.
Now they don't even run their prescription food suggestion by me as they know that I am not buying into their pitch.

I thought about human chicken or beef broth for Bubby a while ago, but they ALL have onion and sometimes garlic in them. Is FF cheap in the US? Here I can't get it for less than $1.00 a tin. A tiny tin. That's when it's on super-duper discount. Normally it's $1.20 +

A tiny tin. That's when it's on super-duper discount. Normally it's $1.20 + FF ranges from .50 on sale to about .57 regular where i shop. 20/$11 is a pretty regular sale at Target. I think it is .65ish at one other place a rarely go unless I'm in the shopping center for another reason and just need something quick. Regarding the garlic/onion issue, tuna in WATER often is actually in vegetable broth. I emailed once to find out what vegetables and they sent me a list of every one and said it could contain these - ummm ok, they don't know what is in their product. Occasionally for a healthy cat i wouldn't worry, but when Mia had kidney disease anemia was a concern. I had to really look to find an albacore tuna in just spring water. Warming the food a bit in the microwave was another trick to make it smell more and try to entice them to eat.

Okey dokey. He got sub q fluids, and I'm to give more daily. He got a shot for nausea and sometimes in cats it helps open up the sinuses. He got an oral appetite stimulant and gets that again in 48 hrs. They cleaned his nose and he sneezed big time, that seems to have helped as breathing is a little better. Got him home and gave him some brothy cat food, will give him some more in a couple of hours. Vaporizers going in the two areas he's been sleeping in. He's under the bed right now. In the short time we've been home he's a tad less wobbly. Still VERY wobbly but can walk a little farther than when we first came in the door. Got a new antibiotic too, but I need to call my WM pharmacy and see if they can fill it. Azithromycin liquid.

Holy cow. He just managed to jump up on to the desk. He used the cat tree for help, but still. This cat couldn't stand up when I let him out of the carrier about 30 or so minutes ago. He walked over to drink water before he did the desk leap. Dang. I'm impressed. kritter the ER vet gave me a script for Azithromycin. I noticed it says not for cats with liver issues. His liver enzymes were up on Monday when the other vet did bloodwork. Todays vet said not overly high, but elevated. Do you think it would hurt to give him the azithromycin instead of the clavamox? ETA he has no history of liver issues, just the slightly elevated enzymes on Monday's visit.

If it were me, I would stick with the Clavamox especially because of the liver issues. I don't want to say "Sure, go ahead and do it" and then have Hoots go into some king of jaundiced liver issue.
That being said, my rescue lady swears by Zithromax but I think that is because she can get it cheaper than Clavamox.
I have never used Zithromax so I am not even sure it it works better than Clavamox.

OK, I just saw your ETA. Zithro is pretty much meal dependent when dosing, I think.
If he isn't eating than that might be an issue.
Lemme go look that up.

I couldn't find anything about it so I might have made that up about meal dependent.
If he doesn't have liver issues than it probably wouldn't hurt him but, like I said, I have never used it before so I don't know if it is better than Clavamox or not.

it's a once a day dose. ER vet said the internal med vet suggested it over the clavamox.

You're actually right. 1800petmeds says it should be given with food. www.1800petmeds.com/Clavamox-prod3319.html

Okey dokey. Looks like azithromycin is more effective in treating URI than clavamox, and is not meal dependent. That might be why er vet wants me to swtich. The only comment about liver was don't give if cat has liver or kidney disease, neither of which Hootie has.

Clean, I love your animated gif! That's so cute! Hootie lapped up a little soupy cat food just now. Not much but a start. He also managed to get himself off of the desk without falling flat on his face (like he did yesterday). The new antibiotic script isn't in stock, has to be ordered, and will be about $42. Guess we're sticking with the clavamox for now, as long as he keeps improving.

Val, stick with the Clavamox. It does take a few days to kick in which is starting to happen now.
The fluids are helping so keep up with that. Did they give you fluids to give him at home?

((((Hootie)))) ((((Val)))) SOOO glad he is doing better. It was a scary afternoon. Yeah, you got all the panicked texts! Thank you! He's getting 100-150 ml saline sub q daily. He's had his dose for today. He's also drinking water fairly regularly on his own. He nibbled at the sardines earlier. I think I have some plain canned salmon in the cabinet, but I may try some FF chicken & liver first. It stinks and he loves it (normally).

His nose is all stopped up again. I'm going to try the close him in the steamy bathroom trick in a few minutes (I'll stay in with him). Another option is to try some saline nose drops to get him to sneeze, but all I have is Ocean Spray (saline) and the article I read suggested baby saline nose drops. I'm not sure what the difference is

How you gonna get drops up there? lol, poor (((Hootie))).

Do you have any soft drink or water with bubbles in it? Bubbles make them sneeze.
And if you find out where his sinuses actually are, you could gently massage the area. He might like it, he might not.

Can you bring him into the bathroom, don't wet him or anything, but just sit there with him with the hot water on in the shower to create steam (vent off) to help unclog him? Keep all windows/door shut so that it builds up in the room.
I cannot imagine trying to give an cat nose drops. After the first nostril (if you get lucky), he would probably not allow you to do it again.

We did the steam room treatment last night, Clean. I sat in there with him, brought in one of his favorite throws for him to sit on. He didn't put up a fuss at all, just got comfy on the throw and snoozed in the steam. He even stayed in there a little longer after I opened the door (still a little humidity in the room). He'll get another treatment later this afternoon and maybe tonight. It seemed to help last night. He's better today. He's not eating a lot at one time, BUT he IS going in the kitchen regularly to nibble so I take that as a good sign. I'll watch the bowls and decide on additional syringe feeding tonight before bed after I see how much he actually eats for the day. He ate some from the bowl last night too, after I went to bed. I could tell this morning from the mess he left I can tell from his skin that his hydration is better, but he's still getting some sub q fluids later as he's not totally back to normal yet.
