Last night was rough. He improved yesterday a.m. then went downhill last night so fast and so bad I asked him if he was ready to go. He licked my hand, headbutted my foot (he was in my lap) and I took that as a "hell no". I rushed out to Walgreens, the ONLY thing open on my side of town after midnight (this was 1:00 a.m.) and the baby food was a no-go, it all had onion in it. I ended up with plain people salmon and a can of fancy feast flaked tuna. The flaked tuna is pretty smelly, BTW. He ate it. Feeding every 2 hrs overnight and he was up on the bed with me when I got up for another feeding around 9 this morning. He then followed me into the kitchen for food, which he hasn't done since we got back from the trip.
A trick from a vet website is what really did it. Website suggested trying other feeding methods, including placing the food in a shallow saucer rather than a bowl AND elevating it so the cat didn't have to dip their head. If they lower their head too low, the sinus fluids can run in the nose and block it, cutting off the sense of smell, and that stops the cat from eating. Once I got the food at a level he didn't have to lean over, it worked. He ate considerably more that way and hydration (skin) is much better this morning. I'm still raising his food, he's eating more that way.

Oh, and he groomed his paws earlier this morning. Not as good as a full bath but it's a start. I've been brushing him a lot, to help. He'll also eat if I brush him while he's eating

He scared the crap out of me last night. That vet tip did wonders. I have to head out to get more cat food so I'm going to hunt for a kitty sized feeder stand. Or a block, LOL.

I know how you feel. Its like "OMG, OMG, OMG".
That is a great vet tip and makes total sense.
Got an email from the HS this morning and they are looking for fosters for 7 kittens 2 1/2 weeks old. Not to take all 7 but will split them up. I can't believe I have made it through this year so far with no kitten fosters. Will probably stand behind the door unless she sends out a desperate second email blast.

The vet tip was awesome. Hootie would go to the food bowl, sniff, take a bite or two and give up. When I elevate the saucer, I can get him to eat most of what I put in it (usually about 2 tablespoons). Plus he's eating crunchy treats, but too many of those and they elevate his blood sugar WAAAAY high. I'm getting some FF all meat wet treats today, he likes those and they don't have carb fillers to mess with the blood sugar.

Yay, Val! You are a Cat Lady Heroine!
That vet tip is great. Never heard it before, must stash it in brain.
And Hootie's a very good boy, working with his mummy to get better.

((((Hootie))))
Cats can scare the bejebus out of you cause they can go up and down so darn fast.
Glad you caught it & the elevation tip is working to get him to eat & keep up his strength & healing.

You are a good catmom, Val. Hootie is a very lucky kitteh. I'm not. I'm the reason he got this bad. I should have rented the quieter unit, and called the vet and asked about what to do with insulin when the eating slowed down. I did neither.

But there are plenty more kittens out there! We need not despair!

And because of what you learned with that lesson, you won't make that mistake when you move to Phoenix. You will know what to look for with temporary accommodations while you find the right apartment to rent. Val, I have learned some hard lessons myself through the years with cat care so you are not alone in the "should have" classroom.

Still standing behind the foster kitten door. No second email blast about the kittens so they may have been placed.

I'm in the "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" camp and look at all the great successes so far. No need to stop now!

Clean, they are probably all snapped up by now and in their foster homes.
The Humane Society has a great foster home program and get lots of responses for kitten fosters.

Thank you for asking! The Hootster is doing well. I worried a bit yesterday as he didn't eat much and was back to sleeping under a clothes rack in the back bedroom, but he came out and slept with me last night and the food bowls were licked clean this morning. I think it was more a case of not liking the flavors of the day and holding out to see if I'd put something different down (I didn't). Apparently the rack is his latest favorite sleeping space (he changes spots every few weeks). His blood sugar # was better this morning too.

Glad to hear that! It's so funny how they pick out new sleeping spots. In my case Quincy is a trendsetter. We had a new bed no one slept in for months, then he started to and then the others did too. Now he likes to go in one of the empty carriers and suddenly everyone wants to be in there now too. In Chloe's case I know she's trying to bully him and take over his territory. Poor guy.

Hootie switches up about every 3-4 weeks. Trixie, OTOH, has been fairly consistent about her sleeping spots and does more of a rotation of favorites than actual new spots.
As long as I can find the spots, I don't care where they sleep.

The question is, have you ladies ever postponed anything because a cat was sleeping there? Like a pile of papers you were going to sort, or books to throw out, or laundry that can wait another day?

I have put off folding the kitchen towels because Stinky likes to play in the pile of clean towels, Stinky walks all over them and checks the tags on each one. He loves to chew on tags, lol. Also I have put off chores because Stinky was sleeping on my neck or foot, don't want to disturb the birds rest.

No. I just move the cat to another comfy spot. Like Kritter says, the day the cats go out to work and bring in income, that's the day I'll consider letting them decide things.
