Another month down and fingers and toes crossed we'll actually see spring-like weather next month. Probably getting the white stuff later this week but sure can't complain about February and starting out in 60s on March 1st. Hope everyone has a groovy day!

We'll be in the 80's here this week, through Thursday anyway.
For anyone who likes coconut macaroons, check out Manischewitz Pistachio Orange macaroons. They're really good. HEB tripled its Kosher section for Passover and had a whole bunch of macaroon flavors I haven't seen before. My guess is its a limited time flavor, at least for HEB. I also saw red velvet, chocolate chip, double chocolate, almond, rocky road and their original flavor. Looks like you can also get Manischewitz macaroons in capichino chip and cookies & cream. LOL - and a special edition of "The Marvelous Mrs Maisel" coconut macaroon (per the website). That last one cracked me up. You can shop the Manischewitz website and buy thru Amazon. (The buy product link will put it in your AMZ cart.)

I really wish we had a HEB here! LOL Shirley U Geste has that same wish for her area. They are expanding. For the longest time they weren't in Houston and then several years ago, they started expanding there. Just recently they started adding stores in the Dallas area. Denise, if you ever see anything you want on the HEB website, I can get it and send it to you.

There's a FB account dedicated to getting HEB to put a store in El Paso, plus several online petitions. HEB just blows them all off. OTOH, HEB expanded into DFW, a notoriously difficult and competitive grocery market. But they refuse to open in El Paso, where they would probably dominate the grocery market in no time flat. Plus EP is convenient for HEB to expand their Mexico presence. The guy who's been overseeing all the growth these past 15 years left the company back in Dec 2022, so maybe the new CEO will have a better opinion of opening in El Paso. That's really my only complaint with HEB Their prices are competitive and they get all kind of new stuff in that makes it really hard to not succumb to impulse buying But it also makes shopping fun. Like the really HUGE expanded Kosher section today for Passover. I wish they'd leave it up all year. No, I'm not Jewish, but I like the Kosher selections because they often are lower in sodium, don't have dairy, and taste good. I send Shirley a coffee care package every so often. HEB Cafe Ole coffee line has really good flavored coffees.

I have heard that the reason that they do not go into El Paso is because of the logistics of serving those stores. HEB stores get trucks just about every day and running trucks out to El Paso is not cost effective. The Mexico stores are all grouped in the southern part of Mexico below Nuevo Laredo with many HEB stores along the route from here to Mexico.
Trucks going to Houston, Dallas, and Mexico serve stores along the way where as there is nothing on that long 550 mile stretch between here and El Paso. Trucks going into Mexico bring back produce from Mexico so they are not deadheading on the return trip. The only thing they could bring back from El Paso is tumbleweeds.
If HEB thought it was worth their time to move into El Paso, they would be there.
Oh yes, always something new in the store that is tempting. The Simple Meals now have desserts The white chocolate macadamia nut cherry cobbler calls my name every time I walk by the simple meals section.

It's snowing all around the outskirts of Portland but not in Portland, thank goodness. I really don't feel like using all my vacation days because we're snowed in.

If HEB thought it was worth their time to move into El Paso, they would be there. Opening in El Paso could be very profitable if they also expand into New Mexico and northwestern Mexico. They could locate a warehouse in Juarez, with two port entries in the the US - El Paso TX, and Santa Teresa NM. They are both easily accessed from Juarez. Multiple export crops are grown in Sonora and Chihuahua Mexico which could be processed thru a Juarez warehouse. IF they expanded into NM (where I think they would be greeted with open arms given the Latino products they carry), they could open in Las Cruces, Alamagordo (major air force base there), and multiple towns along I-25 to ABQ and Santa Fe. Plus multiple stores in the ABQ metro area. The only NM market that might be iffy would be Santa Fe since they are sometimes full of themselves up there, but a Central Market would probably do great there and possibly draw customers from ABQ who want the upscale experience. El Paso to anywhere in NM is an even shorter drive than San Antonio to Dallas, with better roads and less traffic...so less transit time. Cities in NE NM could easily be serviced from a Lubbock TX warehouse. A base in El Paso/Juarez would also put HEB in a position to expand into AZ if they wanted, but I think AZ might be a tougher market to enter. LOTS of competition in AZ (including Aldi's). But huge portions of NM are underserved by the existing grocery suppliers, and the population is there to support HEB stores. IMO anyway. But I don't work for HEB LOL.

If there are underserved grocery markets, there are reasons why they are underserved.
HEB is very thorough in their homework which has made them the successful company that they are today.

My yard cat would freak out over those things & attack them, he's really protective of 'his' yard & goes after anything that intrudes.

It was mixed snow and rain when I left for a hike on some close-in trails this morning. I was thankful for my Christmas boots which replaced my old worn, leaky boots with some nice Gore-Tex boots - I went through this dry shod despite the water lapping up over my feet, though further in it was up to my shins (so over my high-tops) and I had to inch along the cyclone fence that borders the golf course to get past a couple of little bits, the rest I could just splash through.
After that I warmed up at the Starbarks - I live too far out of town to have indie coffee shops, just Starbarks, but the two I use have really nice people working there and they do have excellent bagels. The triple latte was OK.
Then to Value Villaaaage to drop off a carload of donations (I filled the back of my stationwagon) and poke around to see if I could find anything - an hour turning over a fairly large store yielded maybe 8 pieces, but that's how it is these days - two were Clara Sun Woo, which I like finding, though it can be a so-so seller.
We're in the grip of ice and snow for the foreseeable future. I heard things are rough down in Portland - we don't get the ice storms they get, it's just really sloppy and cold here.
Typically, I saw a guy bundled in parka and muffler sitting comfortably in a chair on the sidewalk outside the Starbuck's, in the snowfall, placidly drinking his coffee.

It was so foggy last night, it was a difficult ride home. Part of my route is a highway through Valley Forge Park and you have to watch for deer.
Before leaving work, ice formed on cars from the the dog and cold. Luckily the car defrosted right away.
Going to be a nice day today. Didn’t sleep last night so I am going back to bed in a few minutes.

It was really foggy this morning at about 4:45 a.m. when I was driving to the gym, and we don't have very many street lights, so I was creeping along. Then when I got out of the car my feet almost slipped out from under me. The DH is taking the bus - some places are fine, other places are just black ice. It's staying near freezing as a high all this week, but we may see some sun on Sunday. labbypaws - I didn't sleep last night, either (well, maybe two hours, but then I woke up at like 2:00 a.m.), which is why I went to the gym at 5:00.

In the meantime, how about a pic of Daisy moving into her new condo. Eyelash cat beds are out of fashion and condos with open ventilation are in.

Seattle area is sure getting it's share of icy weather this year! We had snow mixed with sleet yesterday but it only lasted a couple of hours. Today it's supposed to be dry and mid 40s. I'm planning to visit my favorite thrift store later after I get my outgoing donations ready. We're getting ready to clear out our kitchen to prep for long overdue remodel so I'll have a steady stream of household donations for a few weeks. Of course we have to move EVERYTHING on the main floor to find room for storage etc. I can't even imagine not having a kitchen for 1-2 months but it'll be worth it once we're done.

Totally useless but somewhat interesting trivia: The use of citrus to combat scurvy was initially a closely guarded military secret. The ability to remain at sea for long periods of time without contracting the disorder gave them a distinct advantage. British sailors thus acquired the nickname “Limey” because of their use of limes!
