Another 70 degree day! I was able to pick up another wheelbarrow full of pine cones and branches. I could have done more, but my hand gets all crampy from the reacher-grabber.
Then a few hours later, I realized that I'd better cover up my daylilies since they are about 8 inches high already. Hopefully, the deer netting pieces will work until I get to Lowes to buy more deer netting for a whole fence.
Also covered my hydrangeas and tulips with netting. Darned deer.

It looks like Daisy has already put her condo on VRBO and Chance is taking up residence. Hope Daisy got a security deposit because Chance, the cardboard destroyer, has already attacked the front porch.

Totally useless but somewhat interesting trivia: The use of citrus to combat scurvy was initially a closely guarded military secret. The ability to remain at sea for long periods of time without contracting the disorder gave them a distinct advantage. British sailors thus acquired the nickname “Limey” because of their use of limes!I'm not sure where that writer got their information. The Dutch were already using citrus and similar remedies long before the British navy started up with it, and another sailor, Sir Richard Hawkins, even in the early 1600s proposed the use of citrus. Around 1740s a surgeon named James Lind conducted clinical trials on board ship with good results. He submitted his proposal to the Admiralty for including citrus in the diet - all sorts of remedies were being tried down through the years (spruce beer was a popular one), in an effort to remedy scurvy, and Lind didn't get much traction with his idea because it was only one in many ideas the Admiralty was trying. Finally in the 1790s the Admiralty mandated citrus in the diet, but people had already started using it. There was no 'secret' to it and nothing was closely guarded. ? PS: I write in 18th century studies with British naval history and blood sports specific areas of study. I'd help that article but I used to write for Wikipedia and got tired of the ham-handed editors.

That wasn't the part I thought was interesting. It was where the Brits got the nickname "limey". I just thought it was cute. Like I said, it was totally useless but amusing trivia. And it was not from Wikipedia. We hit 85 today and 88 is forecast for tomorrow. And we have a fire weather warning. Summer isn't going to be fun this year

Retro can you get a pod in your driveway for a month or 2? Put stuff in there? Remember you are also going to have a lot of dust and may need to get the house deep cleaned when you are done.

Well, my Samsung TV which was old (apparently) and beautiful like a grand piano, gave me the black screen of death the other day. Even though it was what was considered slim back in the day, it weighs at least 50 lbs I think, so when I give it the heave ho today I will have no energy left to play taps. Anyway, I was forced to get a new TV, new-fangled. You need to have a degree from MIT to use it even though all I want it for is to see my news and crime shows. Spent yesterday installing the thing. Now I need an updated cable box too (this one is from 2012 and yes, I still have cable through my apartment building). And so the tech saga continues. I am too old for the too-many choices of today's world. I feel we are slipping back as I preferred it when there was only one way to see TV, get electricity and phone service. I am the very hi-def of fogey, I guess.

A pod is a great idea Labby- I'll look into it! As far as a deep clean crew- we'll be doing that ourselves. One reason we waited until spring was to be able open doors & windows for ventilation. This old house has lath & plaster walls so we won't have a ton of sheet rock dust. And we'll have the kitchen sealed off with plastic when we do demo. It should be a fairly non-invasive remodel since we're only replacing floors, cabinets and countertops. We're going to have insulation blown into the exterior walls- we'll do that from the inside before doing the wall cabinets. Our kitchen is always freezing in the winter months. Hopefully insulation will help but it's probably the old windows as well.

I finally found some chorizo that isn't insanely high in sodium. My chorizo and cheese frittata this morning was really good

Biggest problem with older tvs is the cost of removal. Dehumidifiers, air conditioners, tvs etc. Ugh.

Checked weather for the next 10 days and looks like chilly rest of the week, 60 on Monday and around 37 for high the rest of the week, meaning it's actually getting colder, not warmer. March has always been stubborn giving up winter and letting spring actually spring. The tree rats are all over. Woke up to 2 on the balcony railing I literally screeched away and 2 more sitting on top of my front tire inside the wheelwell when I left to go out. Please join me and pray for hawks to show up.

When I inherited my Mom's flat screen TV 10 years ago, my 30 year old RCA TV in the pretty wooden cabinet still worked well. I offered it for free online and a lady picked it up for her handicapped son who would play his video games on it. So that made me feel good.

Daisy was not happy with the destruction done to her front porch so Chance was evicted and Murphy has moved in. I think I need to get another condo.

The green chorizo recipe sounds even better: www.mexicanplease.com/homemade-green-chorizo/I've been wanting to make homemade sausage for a while so I'll add both of these recipes to my list. I like hot breakfast sausage, but every single brand out there is loaded with sodium. Ugh. Rain and wind last night. Sunny and 70s today. The pest control guy came yesterday and determined my spider problem was coming from the bedroom door to the patio. He thoroughly treated the patio (yay!) and the apartment. Hopefully that's it for the spiders for awhile. I really don't want to wake up again with a spider bite, or discover another spider on the blanket (eeeeeiiiiiikkkkkk!) I slept on the couch until the pest guy came by and treated the place

I have my garage and outside sprayed every 3 months. Well worth the $60. Spiders and centipedes are evil.

I had a craving for a quesadilla but didn't have anything on hand to make one. So I ordered dinner delivery from Favor. I always put directions in the comment field, so they can find me (name of complex, which gate to use, building & floor number etc). Tonight's delivery guy even texted me to confirm the apt number. It's 613. The photo I received when the app said the food was delivered showed delivery to apt 06103. I think he went to the complex next door. Maybe I should start adding something like, "all buildings are numbered here, numbers on apartment door do NOT start with 0, and all signs are in green" I emailed Favor asking for a refund and found something in the fridge to heat up. Upstairs is getting annoying. The last 2 days, something VERY heavy has been falling and running accross the floor. Sounds like a 300 lb critter with claws. It freaks the cats out. For the life of me, I can't figure out what it is. I'm debating mentioning something to the office.

Hmnn. Whatever is upstairs is now walking all over the office bedroom. That's supposed to be carpeted so I'm surprised I can hear it.

If I was on the 3rd floor, I'd suspect the racoons were back in the attic. They had a critter company out last week to remove the raccoons. But I'm on the first floor.

After a bit google research, I've discovered it is, in fact, possible for critters to get between floors, walls and ceilings on any level. Oh joy. I'll stop by the office tomorrow and give them a heads up. At least I now know the upstairs neighbors don't own a 400 lb dog with oddly long nails

Sunny and 70s here today. I sent a maintenance request to the office marked "high priority" about the critter noises. It's kind of amusing to watch the cats (all three of them!) tracking the noises from the ceiling every evening . I think it's the only time the the cats are all in agreement and work together

Worst part is when they die in there & start to decompose. With smallish kritters you may not even know it was in there until it starts to stink.

We had 60 mph winds yesterday and all night long.
Now the area where I have been cleaning up the pinecones and branches is covered again. And there is a huge pine branch in my yard now that I can't begin to lift to move it.
It looks like my yard has a misplaced Christmas tree, albeit sideways. Will have to ask my daughter to move it eventually.

Yesterday we had 6" of "heart attack" snow and 50 MPH wind gusts. Stupid little branches all over the yard, what a huge MESS!!! I only shoveled by the back door. Most of it is melting today and since Monday is supposed to hit around 60° the rest will be gone and we'll be back to a swampy back yard. My dogs are pining to run but they both turn into mud dogs if I let them run. They'll have to be content with leashed walks for now.

We had a mouse get caught in a trap in our garage but didn't die right away. It dragged the trap off somewhere in the garage and THEN died. Stunk for about 2 weeks. I'm sure someday we'll find a little mousie skeleton somewhere in there.

Finally unpacking all the rattan deer that I bought after Christmas. Think I am going to take the lights off and then spray paint them white to match my other yard deer. Getting to be quite an animal preserve out there.

I learned a new word today: "phubbing" phub·bing /ˈfəbiNG/ nouninformal noun: phubbing
the practice of ignoring one's companion or companions in order to pay attention to one's phone or other mobile device. "phubbing is just one symptom of our increasing reliance on mobile phones and the internet"
Let's just say my Yuppie inlaws are a "phubbing phamily".

I go out with friends that are older than me by about 3-8 years. The one guy tells the same old cop stories every time. Sometimes they go off on a history tangent. The one guy harps on his jobs from the 70’s at Korvettes and at a refinery. I pick up my phone to tune them out. I don’t look at it the whole time. Just a few seconds here and there.

I get that, but given the choice, I'd choose the interaction vs. being made to feel like I don't exist.
