Interesting that the buyers have to have a history of filing false INAD and be flagged as fraudulent and/or abusive before a disputed transaction will be removed from seller calculations.
Why not just get rid of fraudulent and/or abusive buyers?

Sorry, eBay, but we're still going to call and harass you report the scamming buyers. Hopefully we'll even encourage more sellers to report instead of rolling over and giving in to the scamming buyer.

All this makes me glad that I'm close to winding down. This is the only thing I see as not really annoying (in Ina's summary, at any rate):
Starting October 4, 2018, unlimited insertion fee credits for auction-style listings that end in a sale will be available exclusively to US and Canadian Store subscribers with Basic, Premium, Anchor, and Enterprise Store subscriptions. Starter Store subscribers and non-Store sellers will no longer receive these insertion fee credits. Only listings created after you sign up for a Store subscription will be eligible for a credit.
I'm hoping this cleans things up a bit in the auction area. The DH and I both do a lot of research in a number of areas, and we're both struck at the low priced rubbish and pitiful listings and auction endings - people just don't care.

I never have auctions leading to sales so makes no difference to me.
But, I am glad that I am winding down for all the other reasons.

No way will I opt into showing my phone number so that I can get calls at 3 am from low-ballers.

I'm surprised they are letting phone numbers go on listings. They are so paranoid about off-site sales that you sometimes can't even get a message to go through, they think you are passing personal info along.

Get a virtual number or virtual voicemail. Yup, I have 2 Google voice numbers and if you have Comcast, you can create like 5 through there.

Agreed, there's no reason to give your actual phone number these days when there are so many free alternatives.

Can you explain it a bit. Thanks!

I don't remember the steps when I set mine up, but I remember having to register with a code sent to my cell phone. My cell never rings but I get emails telling me I have a Google Voice Message if someone calls and leaves a message. I use the Google Voice number when entering contests or most recently on wholesale websites that want your phone number before you can see prices.

If you have a gmail account, sign into it, then go to voice.google.com and you can start to sign up a number. You can let the assign a number or try to get a vanity number; I managed to get one that ends in PANT and one that has the last 5 digits as my last name. You can set it up to forward to a normal phone, or just have it go to voicemail if you don't want to. You will get an email when you get a voicemail. You can set up the voicemail just like a real phone so no one is the wiser. Also, you can get texts to and text from the phone. It really is kind of cool and best of all...free.

I don't think google.voice is giving out new numbers any more, or they weren't about a month ago when I tried anyway. That could have changed since then, though.

But not getting the eBay thing - it's really contradictory with the way they were going with the almost paranoiac fear of off-site transactions. Maybe it's more useful for large machinery, industrial or eBay motors - I actually have a tick box for giving my phone number (not filled in, naturally). Though, curiously, they allowed a potential buyer to send me her email to contact me after she wanted to cancel an order. I canceled it for her but didn't contact her. I was surprised not to get one of those strange messages from eBay thanking me for not completing a purchase off-site.

A buyer sent an email with their phone number a few days ago. I was really surprised it came through. At work, we'll probably add it since it's a retail business and we don't mind the calls. I'm not giving my number for my personal account.

Thanks for the info - I would never use any phone number for ebay, but I wish I had one like that for all the places I need to put my phone number into. Every place I order from, every time I want to get a quote online or instances like Kat said, things like that where you need to put a phone number into. I always use my cell number and never put our house phone in, but I think they are sharing or selling those numbers.
I don't use my cell that much, we have a landline, it's sort of my emergency phone but it rings often with numbers I don't recognize. Yesterday it was on the coffee table and I was pissed and answered it. It was the computer guy from Microsoft. So they not only call our house landline but now they have my cell phone number. I told him sorry, I have Apple computers and hung up. I don't know why but this infuriates me, like an invasion of privacy I guess.
I'm so fed up with crazy callers, we've been getting so many political ones the past few weeks too. I just said the other day I'm getting all the numbers changed. If I could get something like this I would use it, will look into it. Thanks for the info!

First they want our phone numbers in our listings, then they don't, then they want our phone numbers in our listings....waiting for then they don't?
This is an online business - why not just use ONLINE communication - like email, ebay - and I'm looking at you too!
Love google voice. I have it setup that if someone leaves a message, I get an email with the message transcribed as best as google can do it. Some are totally off the wall but you can always listen to the actual message.
And if I can get my butt in gear, I'll be winding down too. Still have some leftovers as well as a boatload of vintage lingerie to get rid of.

chapeaunoir - Yep. A phone number is very useful in Motors and Industrial. A lot of buyers, in those categories, want to have conversations about the item. Especially if it falls into collector territory or technical questions. We've made a lot of other sales outside of Ebay through one item listed because of a conversation. We also hooked up with an imports parts place about 45 minutes from here as a buyer.

I can see giving the number for Motors & Industrial. So an opt-in is good in that case. Clothing and Misc seller here and I don't wish to deal with it.

What piece of clothing is so important that a buyer has to immediately call me to ask about what - the exact shade of pink? (Thinking about Tribeca's 'hot dog' color item.) I hate answering the phone on a good day (is there such a thing as phone-a-phobia?)
So nope, not gonna do it...

I screen my calls on my land line and don't answer unless I recognize the name or number on caller ID.
I only use my cell for emergency opportunities so if forced, I would give my cell. Don't even know if it is charged. Not too many emergencies in my life.
Hopefully, I can be pretty much done if the phone number thing is ever mandatory.

I screen every single call that comes in on my land line. I don't have caller ID, just an old fashioned answering machine. Most of the calls I get are "hang-ups", most likely from telemarketers even though I'm on the do-not-call registry. All of our friends/relatives know to just start talking to the answering machine and if we're home we'll pick up. Only a handful of people have my cell phone number, which is also on the do-not-call list but still gets robo calls nearly every day.

I'm on the do-not-call registry too but that is just a joke. I don't think the robo calls and telemarketers pay any attention to it.
What I hate are the futile attempts to use a local number as a bait. I even had my own number call me once. My caller ID shows them as Out Of Area so I know it is a fake local number attempt.

I've gotten taken by those local area and pre-fixes a few time while I was waiting for my local pharmacy to call back. It looks like it's my local prefix and I just pick up. The fake Microsoft people and the Hotel vacation lady have gotten very smart with cloning numbers. Now I'm letting them talk first on the house line to see who it is, we have one of the old fashioned answering machines.
I dump my spam email if I get any but the phone calls bother me 100% more than junk email. Landline and 2 cells ringing constantly. I've taken to shutting the cell phones off most of the time. Had it on because I dialed 611 to pay the cell bill and it was on my coffee table - junk call after call after call yesterday until I picked it up and practically screamed hello to one caller who happened to be the Microsoft guy. So I shut the phone off - sad it's come to this with these cell phones for us.

I give my buyers a card attached to the packing slip with my cell # on it, but get very few calls from them. I have "Hiya" on my cell and can block spam numbers, and it even blocks some numbers automatically if the number is suspected spam. Hiya is free.
I get most of the spam calls on my landline and have about 100 numbers blocked. But I have had the landline forever and it was the number that we had when I grew up.

Looking through the update, there isn't anything in particular that jumps out at me that makes me want to move on or at least reduce my income dependency on this site, it's a general direction that I'm seeing.
One thing that's troubling is Wenig's obvious money grab to prop up growth, which is not organic, and one move is so harebrained that I'm not sure who came up with it, but the response to Amazon's large media section, downloads and streaming, is to RAISE fees for media on eBay to 12%.
It reminds me of a local thrift owner who felt like they weren't selling enough, and thus not making enough money, so the response was to raise their already high prices.
I can live with most of the changes, but it's tough to have confidence with this kind of thinking, which is what I find troubling (along with the SNADs debacle).
