I won't go into the whole blah-blah, but my beautiful, naughty Kewpie may be having her left eye removed on Monday. She's staying at the vet all weekend so that she can have ointment put in and if it ruptures she'll be in the right place for emergency surgery. Unless the ointment works a miracle (and with this cat you never know) the eye will come out on Monday. She'll be 16 in February. She's an Aquarius and enjoys wet food, lying in the shade on hot days, and having her face rubbed. She keeps her svelte, barrel-shaped figure by eating heartily and engaging in moderate exercise such as jumping up onto the sink and counters, and cantering from one room to another. Here she is, helping me change the sheets. Of course she'll be on light duties during her convalescence.

She has no teeth at all on the left side. The vet said that's very strange.

Such a pretty girl. The Missy family is sending healing thoughts. Thanks, Kritter. (I say that as her stand-in mother.) Photos don't do her justice. She's absolutely bewitching in real life. People go all mushy and say, "Ohhhh, what a beautiful cat." She actually recognises and expects to hear the word beautiful, lol. Her kitten pics (below) are just scrumptious. If I'd owned her then I would have spoilt her silly, especially when her eyes turned golden.

As a cat she loooooves men and is incredibly flirtatious. I had a guy here once, just for afternoon tea, and I'd concluded that I didn't like him much, let alone fancy him. Kewpie strolled in as he was leaving and stopped dead, staring at him. When he moved towards her and made encouraging noises she backed off. She has NEVER done that before. Her usual MO is to blink at them, pout, and turn around to show off her buxom figure. When they say she's beautiful she graciously advances and transfers as much hair to their ankles as possible.

I just rang to check on Kewpie. All is well in terms of eating, pooing etc. She's being a total angel and they're all in love with her. They have an inexperienced temp nurse so they got her to put the ointment in, but warned her that "her owner" had said she might scratch. Of course Kewpie was great.
The vet kept saying, "She's so shy!" lol. Not when she's sitting on my front step waiting to waylay visitors she's not.
The eye is no better. The vet was saying the eye might just die and then it can be left in. But will that look gross? Does anyone here know?

PS. I was thinking of visiting her, but I know she wouldn't give two hoots if I showed up or not. I'm feeling a bit jealous that she's being so lovey-dovey with strangers, but she wrestles me and draws blood when it's flea poison time.

This is Kewpie's fourth day at the vet clinic. I just spoke to a second vet, who has only seen Kewpie today and she says she thinks the eye may be healing. Apparently the first vet thought so yesterday, but didn't say anything to me in case she was imagining it. lol, I'd do that too.
Apparently the bulge on the eye lens is gone, or pretty much gone. All her blood tests are normal.
The new plan is to keep her for another week and continue with the ointment. They're also going to "insert" plasma from her own blood into the eye to help with healing. I have to ring every day at 3.30 to see how she's going. Note: no invitation to visit!
Vet #2 says Kewpie is "very happy with us". She eats and poos and doesn't even bat a paw when they put the ointment in. Is this a nefarious plot to keep her there forever? Are they hoping I'll just forget about her?

Are they hoping I'll just forget about her? Nah, I think they're just happy to have a cooperative cat for a change. I get the same feedback when Hootie goes in: "oh, he's so sweet and cooperative!". Um, no. He's scared to death. You know, like 'frozen with fear"? But whatever. If they think he's cooperative they'll give him lots of scratches under the chin, which makes me and him happy

Oh, that's good news about Kewpie! I hope her eye heals up quickly, so she can come home and resume terrorizing you and disapproving of your dates

She looooves people - far too much. I'm pretty sure she got stolen once, then made her way home. The vet clinic has a couple of cats wandering around and it would be a perfect situation for Kewpie, if they wanted her. But...she's mine! Now Lydia, she's the frozen-with-fear type, but they think she's sweet. Lamington was so terrified when we last went to the vet that he pooed in the carrier. He's been missing his mummy (Kewpie) terribly. He's been sleeping in my room with me and Lydia. It's funny only having two cats, not the big band of sillies I used to have. They each had their role in the daily comedy and now there are bits missing. Thank you all so much for the healing vibes and thoughts! She's not out of the woods yet but you've all got her on her way to full health.

No, Val, I forgot to ring yesterday at the appointed time and when I did ring I got a senile old man on the phone. I said, "Hi, I'm Miss Pettigrew and I'm ringing to see how my cat is." "A cat?" "Yes. I'm ringing to see how she is. Her name is Kewpie Doll." "Is she boarding here?" (Well, Mister, would I be ringing you up if she was home with me?) "Yes. She's got a sore eye. My name is Miss Pettigrew." "I don't think we have any cats here but I'll ask." "No, no, it's fine, I'll ring tomorrow."
I've encountered him on the phone before. He was senile then too. I hope he's just the senile old dad of one of the vets, not anyone who's actually responsible for anything.
I'll try later at the appointed time. That'll be 48 hours since the last update and the prognosis should be clearer. Lamington is very depressed and if his appetite continues to decline I'll have to take him to be boarded in an adjacent cage. He misses his mummy.

So I rang and had to speak to vet #3. She did Bubby's mouth operation last year so I suppose she's a good vet but she's a bit vague. She's German or something and always seems surprised when I ask questions, which she rarely knows the answers to. But my Kewpie has cracked even her frigid bedside manner, and she gushed a bit over what a good girl she is. And she invited me to visit tomorrow. I don't think Kewpie will care one way or the other but the description of her eye today was so vague that I want to get a look at it for myself. Plus vet #3 hadn't seen it at its worst. So I think we're on a plateau with the healing. They're still using the ointment and putting plasma in too. Lamington is a very sad little fellow. I'll have to work out how to brighten his days because she might be there til next Monday. Some cooked chicken might be a start.

Can you take Lamington in with you to visit? Val, I've thought about that a lot and he's a real scaredy cat so I think the trauma would be too much and outweigh the benefit. He fights like a mad thing to get out of the carrier, and really can escape from one I've got. He actually tumbles them over and over on the floor. If I succeed in getting him to the vet he poos himself. He might be so mental that Kewpie's presence wouldn't even register on him. I think I'll take an old towel and if they propose to keep her over the weekend I'll get them to put it in her cage to get her smell on it. Then I can pick it up tomorrow (Friday) and put it where he's been sleeping. If she poos on it overnight I'll just cut that bit off. If she lets me have a cuddle today I'll let him sleep on my top. Luckily I have plenty of scruffy clothes and ain't afraid to wear them in public. I'd so love a cuddle! She might let me so as not to ruin her sweet image with the vets. lol. I deliberately got British Shorthairs because they loook so big and cuddly, but these two HATE cuddles. Or being picked up at all. Bubby was the cuddliest cat I've ever known and she was a feral baby. But I read the other day that feral babies will attach wholeheartedly to one human (or none) and that's it. That was certainly Bubby. I'll definitely cook some chicken and let Lamington have bits off "my" plate. It makes him feel special. lol.

Kewpie is still at the vet and will be until Friday. They injected dye into her eye yesterday to assess healing (they've done this a few times) and where the rupture spot was there are now two tiny pin points. So they're continuing with the ointment three times a day and starting an antibiotic.
She is a very lucky girl. If she hadn't had breakfast the day I took her in, she would have had the eye removed immediately. Then it was the weekend, when they don't operate. Those three days grace with the ointment improved it enough that they decided to postpone the operation a few more days. And she got to keep her eye. She is one lucky lady.
They don't know how much sight she has left, but at least she still gets to look good. People telling her she's beautiful and saying, "Awwwww," is very important to her.
She got hissy and scratchy at the end of last week but now she's angelic again. The head vet said, "We LOVE her!"
Lamington found the smelly towel a bit confusing but then slept on it for a couple of nights. Now he's over it. I think he's decided to move on with his life.
