I use Apple Pages for typing, letters and such. Finally replaced my iMac and while transferring old files and work I found out that the new Pages won't read the old work. That caught me off guard.
Anyone have a suggestion for a relatively inexpensive program for the Mac that's similar to Microsoft Word (without the big price tag)?

Microsoft 365: virtualsellers.proboards.com/thread/686/microsoft-office-365Love, love, love it. I pay $9.95 mo, taken from PayPal, and I get full Microsoft products for up to 5 devices (windows pc, mac, tablets or smartphones, any combination). Includes Excel, Word, Powerpoint, Outlook and storage on MS's cloud thing (I don't know much about this particular item as I use dropbox).

Oh, and it reads from all versions so far. I have clients on different versions of word & excel, and I can read any items at home that I created at their office.
I have it installed on 2 Windows laptops and a Mac (OS 10.8). Looks like it supports all OS from 10.6 up, so it should work if you're on Yosemite.

Open OfficeThis is great, free, open source software. Also has spreadsheets, database and a draw program. I use it every day.

Here's the link for Apache Open Office on Mac, but it appears to only work up to OX 10.9 Mountain Lion. You might be out of luck if you're on Yosemite. www.openoffice.org/porting/mac/

thank you both for the replies-am going to check the out.
This new computer is getting frustrating-just found out Apple no longer has a built-in disc drive in (thought it was only the new laptops). So i bought one-then found out the disc drive doesn't come with the correct cord.
My brother works for Apple-I asked him about Word programs but he didn't get back to me. And altohugh I got a great discount, I'm starting to regret updating this machine.
Sadly, I didn't get the technology gene in the family:-)

I have the mac version MS Office on both my Macs (a very old one and a new one), plus I have it on two Windows PCs (both Win 7). I swap files back (Word and Excel) and forth all the time. MS Office actually runs better on a Mac than it does on Windows! It's not significantly different, between Mac & Windows versions of Office.

Good grief, I am so old. I have not the slightest clue what you guys are talking about. I, too, am so old. My kids know more about technology than I do. And i'm embarrassed to say, i come from a "tech" family. My Dad owned a computer programming company back in the day, I have one brother that got his masters at MIT and has a mind like Bill Gates (worked for Apple 30 yrs ago and now works for them again-he works for Topsy, a Twitter analytic company purchased by Apple approx. 2 yrs ago), and my baby brother, a Phd in computer science and robotics. I can turn a computer on and if it works i'm good-trouble shooting, not so much............ And me thinks I'm not gonna change:-)

Val, you're a wealth of information!
i'm still working on setting up this computer (really want to make an avatar but haven;t loaded Adobe Flash yet).
My latest obstacle: trying to load Adobe Illustrator and Adobe told me it was a "pirated" disc. Last night at 10 pm-I laughed & poured a martini:-)
And FYI-I bought this "pirated disc at Best Buy for way too much $$ 3 yrs ago and it was loaded on my old Mac.
I'm too old for all this!

Oops, can't help you there. I still have my old Mac (eMac actually, it was a floor model) and since it runs fine, I still use it for the expensive software (full Adobe Photoshop for example). I didn't try to load any of that on the new Mac. I doubt it would have worked, since the eMac is the older OS, pre-Intel chip.
But…if it's only 3 years old, you shouldn't have the OS issues that I did. I wonder if it's reading it as pirated since it's been installed on the other Mac already? Or….is it too old to work with Yosimite? I haven't upgraded yet to Yosimite, so I'm not familiar with what 'older' stuff will and won't run on it.
Adobe Flash you can download from the internet in a flash (groan) and install it easy peasy. That one's free.
Why not see if one of your siblings can remote in and set stuff up for you?
