My 15 year old deaf cat has taken to peeing on the cupboard where her food is. Luckily NO human food is EVER prepared on that surface. We have taken to putting puppy pads down.
We have seen the vet and run tests and there is nothing really wrong with her. Signs of old age but no real issue. We have tried the feliway to try and attract her to the litter box and discourage her to not pee there. We have stood there and watched her eat and grabbed her and put her in the littler box if she starts scratching.
Any suggestions?

Is the cupboard wood or a porous surface? She could be smelling the residual pee from before even though you can't smell it.
I would change her feeding station to another area. Does she free feed or eat only when you put food down?

She free feeds. The other cats eat there too. Have for the 10 years we have lived here. I will try that. The surface is soapstone, which is very porous. I can sand it down and oil it though.

MUP - I've been researching soapstone counters because we're considering them in the house. They're generally not porous, and most liquids evaporate. But I guess it could be different with the urine.
Poor kitty. I hope you find something that works for her.

We love soapstone! It does scratch but is heat resistant. My husband loves to have them oiled but we dont do that any more because they are black vs. the gray color they will be when first cut. Plus, I dont like the oiliness of them! LOL
I am going to move her food into the wash room and try that.
Thanks!

How come he likes to have them oiled?
We had black granite in our old house. I loved it, but want something different. We're going with white cabinetry this time around and I wanted that darker gray look with the soapstone. Does that not last?
Hopefully your kitty will start going where she's suppose to. I always feel bad for the older pets when they start to get out of sorts. It makes me want to protect them more.

Over time they will turn black. They start out a chalky gray color and you can oil them if you want to get the black color immediately.

Thanks for the suggestion to move the food. So far, so good. No peeing and she remembers the new food spot.
The other 2, not so much..... Slow learners. LOL The kids and I keep having to show them where the food is. I know they will pick it up eventually.
