Meanwhile Coach and Michael Kors are upset because sales of full priced bags are down...

2.4 billion is sorta obscene. JMHO but that's a lotta $$.

Coach CEO Victor Luis said he planned to "unlock Kate Spade's largely untapped global growth potential" and that the acquisition provides "an additional vehicle for driving long-term, sustainable growth.”
Didn't Coach kind of trash its own brand?

Didn't Coach kind of trash its own brand? That's kind of what I was thinking. But Kate Spade isn't all it used to be either. However, I do believe Coach is still strong in other global markets. Maybe KS isn't?

I thought Kate Spade (person) left that brand and started another one. Let me check.

And I just read something that the pull to buy KS was that coach doesn't appeal to millenials whomever they are but they think KS does.

I don't mind Coach so much in the plain styles. I hate hate hate bags that are walking billboards like most of them are. But their plain pieces are solid for the price point. Especially with all the sales and clearances nowadays. I have a KS tote I got used that I really like. And with both of them, even though they're basic, I wish I could remove the small logo that is on the front. I carry them "inside out" (with the brand facing me). I don't know why it kind of bothers me.
I don't think millennial like them because they're a "thing". Too many people have both brands. Why do you want to have everything others have and not just want to be yourself? I think that's their angle?

That's exactly it, Liz. Walking billboards splashed with giant logos everywhere. I refuse to do it. I'm not paying for something and then providing that designer/manufacturer with free advertising.
A discreet logo is fine.
When my youngest was in HS, the girls carried anything from Coach to LV, - had to have the logos.

At my DD's school - wealth was a big factor. It was more about who had the most expensive luxury item. There were some kids who new audi's.
But then there's the athletes / my daughter's group. They didn't care about displaying names or showing people what they own. My daughter was proud when I scored her something cool from the thrift store. lol

Coach is trying to clean up its act with less outlets and sales. They know they trashed their own brand - greed first, quality second. Outsourcing to China didn't help, which to me is the death of a designer product. It's nothing special when it just rolls off the same assembly line with the Walmart stuff, I don't care if there's all this hoo-hah about 'careful onsite quality control' - I tend not to believe it from what I see. If it's worth something, don't sweatshop it.

Actually Coach now has an online outlet store.

Kate Spade has a ton of outlet stores, just like Coach does. IMO it is a highly discounted brand that is on equal footing as Coach. I dont see this as a step up, I see it as a step sideways.
If Coach wanted to improve its brand they should have looked higher.

Coach states, though, that they're limiting factory products and outlets - I wonder if the online outlet store is an attempt to control channels.

Coach states, though, that they're limiting factory products and outlets - I wonder if the online outlet store is an attempt to control channels. They have had it about 5 - 6 years. I know it used to be by invite only meaning you could not order unless they allowed you to even look at their outlet site. They started it at some point after I got their ban letter.

Oh, that's like the wholesale places I use, but not wholesale. Hmmm, how hoity-toity!
