I've been to live auctions in the past, but for some reason I was reminded of this strange thing that happened at one, many years ago.
It was a small, poorly attended auction, with an auctioneer I hadn't dealt with before. An item came up and he asked for an opening bid of $25. I bid on it, and there were no more bids. He said "Sold," then informed me, "It takes two bids to make an auction," and therefore my price would be $50 (plus the 20% buyer's premium). I informed him that I would not be buying it for $50.
I don't know why this memory popped into my head this morning, but I thought it was interesting. Can you imagine trying that on eBay?!

Utter hogwash! That auctioneer wanted his commission to be higher, plain and simple.

I've bought and seen many others buy auction items with only one bid!
Once I saw someone not used to bidding place a second bid when she was the only one bidding. The auctioneer told her, "Lady, it's only you & me.", and slammed the gavel. I don't know what she had to pay.
