That's so awesome! Oregon Humane Society adopted out it's 11,000th pet in 2016 last weekend ~ unfortunately, they still have animals that need homes...

It's hard to walk through those shelters and see all of the animals. Years ago I had to rescue one of our labs from doggie jail. My heart was break No for all the animals.
I wish people would fix their pets. So many mixed breeds means lots of accidents. Or just stupid people allowing it to happen. I'm not speaking about designer dogs - that's another convo.

The Rescue called me last night and she is pulling 14 cats/kittens from the city shelter today. Our shelters will never run of of adoptable animals, unfortunately.
She said she couldn't stand for them to be there at this time of year when people can pay $30 or less to adopt a Christmas present for somebody else and then the present is thrown out of the house because somebody is allergic or the present scales the Christmas tree and is thrown outside.

It'd be better if the shelter would just stop adoptions for a few weeks. $30 or less is amazing. Here it's like $250 because you're paying for the compulsory desexing, the micro-chip and, I think, some kind of registration fee. THEN you have to register with the local govt and that's about $50 for a desexed animal. (Triple that for un-desexed, thank heavens!) It's bad if the price puts off some good people, but it probably weeds out a lot of "casual" animal lovers and gift-hunters. The problem isn't with registered breeders, it's with careless families and backyard breeders putting cross-breeds out into the world. And puppy mills, of course, but they should just be stamped out forever for many other reasons.

Good point, Kritter. I thought shelters didn't allow adoption for other people unless it was in the household.
I guess that would be similar to the Easter chicks and bunnies. All cute until they grow up and act like chickens and rabbits.

The city shelter will adopt to just about anybody if they can come up with whatever they are asking as the price that day.
Plus it is hard to tell with some of these "adopters" if they are telling the truth or not.
$30 is beyond amazing because all animals are spayed/neutered, up to date on all vaccinations, and are microchipped.

That is an amazing price for a ready to go pet. I hope people aren't using that price as a factor with adopting. Furry family members can get very expensive, and hopefully they're willing to spend money when needed.

IMO It is way too cheap and devaluates the animal into a throw away if it doesn't work out like they thought it would.
On "special promotions" the price is even lower and that really pisses me off. It seems the attitude of the shelters here is "any home is better than no home" so get them out at whatever anybody wants to pay. there used to be at least a little investigation on the adopter like if the pet deposit was paid, if the apartment/rental allowed pets, if the adopter had a vet but now it is pay your money, walk out the door, and load you new dog into the back of your pickup and chain it in your backyard.

That's sad. I was looking through one of the sites last night and it's around 300 to adopt. I think it was a herding dog rescue or the one in Wyoming. I looked at quite a few. Every now and then I browse look to see if there are any female border collies. I really shouldn't because I can't take on another one right now. Flyer likes the attention.

I read that as Flyer and I browse to see if there are any female border collies and laughed, like internet dating for dogs. In my defense it is early and I am only on first cup of coffee, lol.

Hahaha. Well it would be with his approval. He has a few girlfriends out there that we do play dates. Everyone is fixed, so it's mostly butt sniffing and running together.
He gets really nervous around other dogs. The first time at a dog park he wouldn't come out from between my legs until we were at the far end away from all of the dogs. That was in Houston.
