I know I've seen this problem addressed here before but my search skills fail me.
Background info. DH orders 12 heavy flange bearings with free shipping. Had a note in our box to pick up at P.O. $14.70 postage due. How do I go about getting the money from seller so I can get the bearings released?

Honestly, I think you will either have to:
A. Eat the cost and beg the seller to give you the money (no guarantees and I don't see where eBay will force the seller to pay) B. Have it returned to sender and order them from another seller when you get your money back
That stinks. Sorry.

Not what I wanted to hear of course but I'll return to sender in the morning. Thanks!

I'd give the seller a chance to make it right. Send them a photo of the notice with amount due and a deadline to send the postage due. If they don't meet the deadline then allow it to be returned to sender.

I think they will hold it for at least 2-3 days

The notice on USPS says the item will be returned to sender if not picked up by December 15, so a good two week window there. Hope he comes through and does the right thing.

Oh my goodness, he just sent the $14.70 to my Paypal account. I'm in shock but grateful to encounter an upright seller.

Glad it worked out. The cynic in me says he is able to offer free shipping by sending everything out at the 1# rate and only occasionally gets caught out so just pays up to the buyers who complain.

That is what I was thinking too. Hoping he won't get caught by any post office along the way. Probably works for him some of the time.

Mystery solved. He sent the items in a padded flat rate envelope. Postmaster said the envelope must maintain the integrity of its shape or it can't be used for flat rate. Nailed it! I feel like this is deja vu all over again!

You can fit anything, any shape in the PADDED flat rate as long as it closes - just like the flat rate boxes. Your postmaster is WRONG. However - that package is wrapped/taped. Did the PO add the shrink wrap or was that the seller's doing?

That is the sellers doing. I argued "If it fits it ships" but he was not having it.

If the seller did all that wrapping/taping, then I can see why the PO didn't allow it as flat rate. It has the appearance of being altered. Also, had the seller not done all the taping, it would have probably torn apart in shipping.
Your seller owes you the $$ whether they like it or not.
WTH didn't they just ship it in a Regional Rate A or medium flat rate box?

Because the padded flat rate is cheaper if they can get away with it.
This time they got caught big time as they should have been.

I figured that was why. Sad, seller would have come out cheaper in the long run with a Reg A. Oh well. Some have to learn the hard way I guess.

This is kind of what I was talking about in my car parts thread. These sellers know what they're doing. They're saving a lot of money doing this.
That's why your seller didn't even hesitate to pay the postage due. No questions, no pictures.

I agree with Dantes.
He knew darn well what he was doing and was figuring he had maybe a 50/50 chance of getting away with it.

You could always report the seller to their Postmaster

I like Val's idea.
I've been sorting through the lot of car parts my DH purchased. I have a pallet filled with stuff that I refuse to list because by the time I pay fees, free shipping, and calculate the 10% loss, they're not worth listing. I think we're going to dump them local somewhere in one big lot.
I still have a ton to list, just haven't.
Now if I go in and do what some of these sellers do, I can justify listing. I won't play that game.

I didn't know a padded flat rate envelope could even do that! There's a part of me that admires the dude for his nerve.

I suggested he use the boxes and he replied they cost too much money and he'd have to remove free shipping. Huh? So yes, he's using PFR envelopes and hoping most make it through without extra charges. Reported.

The RR boxes would cost him $2-$4 more, max. He couldn't up his price by that much? Some businessman.

A Region A box has a weight limit of 15 pounds while a Region B box has a weight limit of 20 pounds, so the above photographed package would only been able to go Region B rate, and depending on the zone, could have been pretty pricey to ship.
