I'm trying to list an expensive item on behalf of my church clothing sale as local pickup only. I'm listing it that way because it will be a $500+ sale and I don't want to take any chances on a damaged return, chargeback or any other PayPal or Ebay buyer protection stuff. I'm cross-listing on craigslist.
So, how does this work? I chose "no" in the PayPal accepted dropdown and then checked the box for "See item description" in the "Other Payments" section. When I went to schedule it, I got this error message from Inkfrog:
"We can't list this item because its payment policy contains one or more invalid payment methods, select a payment policy that contains only valid payment methods. To list this item, you need to accept PayPal or other approved electronic payments as a payment method."
Is there no way to list a local pickup item without accepting PayPal? What about the advice I've always read about not accepting PayPal for local pickup items as you'll have no tracking info.?
Thank you!

I'm stumped. I thought you were allowed to require cash for local pickup only. I assume that you specified no shipping. I hope someone else will know how to do it.

Thanks, emerald. Yes, under the shipping section, I checked the "local pickup only" box.

The last time I had this issue in Inkfrog (listing something in Motors with cash on pickup) I listed it with PP and then went into eBay and edited PP out there.
That may not work anymore though, this was several years ago.

Or you could just list it through the SYI form to start with.

Okay, here's another question.
Hypothetically, if someone buys it through Ebay and then when they see it in person, they decide they don't want to complete the transaction, how do I prove to Ebay that the sale didn't go through so I can get my fees back?

I would think you'd have to do a cancel transaction. I doubt if you could do UPI with a cash pick up listing.

That has to happen all the time with PUs. Sometimes the 'buyer' probably doesn't even show if it's going to be a cash sale. You could always call CS before you list.
Do they still have the Answer Center on eBay? I always got knowledgeable answers there before I found CAB. There might be people there more experienced with PU sales.

I ran into this a few years ago when I was selling a rocking chair. The listing wouldn't go through unless I allowed PayPal for payment. So in the listing I specified all over the place that this was local pick up/cash only. I included a blurb that ebay would not let the listing go through without the PayPal, but I would NOT accept Pay Pal, cash only.
A very nice couple one state over bought the chair. I met them in a hotel parking lot. I had prepared a receipt for both of us to sign, indicating that they received the chair, I received the cash, and they were satisfied with the transaction. Was the best I could come up with to protect both of us. I figured I could scan the receipt and send to ebay if necessary.
Not perfect, but luckily it worked.

Thank you, milmar. I tried Betty's suggested workaround of listing through Inkfrog and then editing through Ebay, but it just wouldn't let me list without some form of electronic payment. I totally don't get that since Ebay's own policy says that "Payment Upon Pickup" is allowed: pages.ebay.com/help/policies/accepted-payments-policy.htmlSo, I ended up listing with the PayPal accepted, but plastered local pickup only and the suggested Ebay verbiage about contacting me for accepted payment methods. If someone buys it and pays with PayPal, I'm planning on discussing it with them and then refunding their PayPal payment at the time they hand over cash and take possession of the item.

That just rang a bell, since it has been a few years. Actually, my couple did pay with PayPal. I emailed them and explained cash only and immediately refunded their PayPal payment. I think I was concerned that they would pick up the chair and then claim item not received, even though I would have a signed receipt. When they paid cash, they had no one to file any claims with.
Again, imperfect. But I just did the best I could at the time.

Not sure if you're still needing help with this issue or not.
This is what I've done in the past - I show that I accept Paypal deposit for X amount within 24 hours. I then state the transaction will be completed to both our satisfaction. Since it's local pickup, there has to be communication to coordinate. When I contact the person, I just state pay in full when you pick up and don't worry about the deposit. I never had issues with this system. If they ask about paying with Paypal, just tell the truth. That you have no way of proving you delivered the item. Most people are really good about understanding the rules.

I just tried listing a local pickup item with SYI. It won't accept it without one of their approved payment methods. I know we used to be allowed to specify cash only for local pickup. I clicked on their approved payment methods link, then clicked to send them a message, and told them this is a problem, because local pickup will have no online tracking, and therefore no seller protection.
They say this, "If you offer payment upon pickup, you may include this statement in your listing: 'Contact me for payment methods to pay on pickup.'" But you're still required to check the box for PayPal.

Thanks, dante. I doubt it's going to sell locally for what I'm asking anyway, but that's a good idea. I'm wondering, though, if they click to pay with PayPal, wouldn't it make them pay the entire amount? What I'm hoping is that if someone were interested in it, they'd contact me before purchasing anyway.
I've had two people contact me with questions, but both lived far, far away and didn't realize that it was local pickup only.
Okay, emerald. That's exactly what I did. I used that wording and the PayPal box is checked. I guess that's all we can do.
