I sold this grill 291374695590 and received this message a few days later.
"When this item was posted it made no mention of the crack on the right hand side of black handle. This does concern me as that area does get hot while cooking and I don't want the handle to break off. Could you please help me on this? I don't want to post anything negative on your ebay account. Personally to me paying that amount of money for a cracked item is a little too much. Wish you had informed me, Refund to me for crack? Thank you for your prompt action."
Sigh. I never noticed a crack, but hey, I'm human, so maybe I missed something. Here's my message back.
I reply...
"Oh no, I never noticed it. I am happy to take it back if you aren't happy."
Her:
"If you think it would be fair, I would be willing to accept $25.00 and grill as is."
Double sigh...well of course you would.
I reply:
"Post a picture of the damage here please."
She then responds with this.
"Sorry I cant take a pic of this item with the cracked right end piece. My husband is extremely ill and he did all that for me. He has brain tumors and can no longer function. I guess you would have to take my word for it. I am an honest person, but how would you know? So I guess I would have to leave it at, if you feel led to send me the $25 for the broken arm then do so. It would cost me that to mail it back to you. I guess I learned a hard lesson on purchasing off e-bay. I have other priorities in my life at this time, my husband is dying."
Triple Sigh.
I reply with...
"You can snap a picture with your phone and post it right here. If not, then like I said, I am happy to take it back for a full refund. That's really all that I can do to help."
Haven't heard back from her yet. Don't think I will, but I am just getting so tired of bottom dwellers.
Just need to vent, thanks!

To me, the first message sounds like a hidden feedback extortion ("I don't want to post anything negative on your ebay account.") I would call ebay and see what they say. The story about her husband - sorry, I don't don't buy it. Her husband is dying and she went to buy a grill? Sorry, but I don't buy it.
I had a similar issue when the customer found a reason why she can not return the item (she was on vacation abroad, when she realized the problem with the item) and she expected a refund just on her word)and she hinted at feedback, just like yours. Ebay did remove the negative feedback. Not saying this is always the case, maybe I just got lucky.

I don't believe it. Where is the crack in your photo? I don't see it and the item is shown and photoed clearly and listed as brand new. I think she either cracked it, has an older one herself that was previously cracked OR it arrived cracked during shipping. If it did arrive cracked then you could file a claim if it was insured or priority mail was used.
How is the buyers history, FB left? Any other recent purchases viewable on WC for a similar item?

What a bunch of bull hockey.
When they go there, dying whoever/disability/yada yada yada then I no longer believe a single word they have to say.
Just keep on repeating Return for Refund, Return for Refund, Return for Refund, Return for Refund.

She lost me at the brain tumors. I think you did the right thing. Prove or return. No other choices.

If ANYBODY in my family was dying of brain tumors, the last thing on my mind would be the freaking handle on the panini grill.
I think she thinks that she just might have overpaid on the grill and now she is trying to mitigate her sadness by asking for a partial.
Do your homework, lady, before you hit the BIN button

Just in case it is a switcharoo, I would also add that once you check the returned item for your sellers mark that you will refund.

I'm thinking the same thing, buyers remorse or guilt. It's been 2 days since I have heard from her. On a very different , but equally annoying note, someone requested to return something that didn't fit, and it came back today and I hadn't even responded to the request yet. I feel like the Mall the day after Christmas.

If the returned item was on a no returns listing, I think you can refuse the package (and therefore the return).

I already opened it because I had no idea what it was. No returns means nothing anymore. Between this crap and people not paying, I've become pretty cynical of this whole thing. I used to sell 3x what I sell now with 3x less the problems.

She had time to type emails back and forth, but no time to send a photo. Sure. Right.

Didn't someone mention the other day about an approaching full moon? Yesterday I had a fisher...my very FIRST one! Says she got the top, it fits and she loves it, BUT before she leaves FB I need to know... it "smells" and there's pilling that didn't show in the pics. Well, after sending her an apologetic email and explaining just how I acquire things from various sources that may contain odors that don't wash out since I only use unscented, natural products, I put her on the spot. Just what DID she smell? Answer: "Oh, that explains things. It's the vinegar." Then I defended the "pilling" issue...there was NO pilling. Period. She didn't pursue it beyond "I'm disappointed because I wanted this top for work, now I'll only be able to wear it weekends." Boo-hoo! And what really chapped my hide was the fact she had calculated shipping for over $10, and to save her $, I compacted the top into a PFRE and refunded her the difference. Not a word about that, ever. So, I asked what would make her happy since returning would be too costly and she replied, "25% off." A quick calculation and speedy fingers logging into PP gave her $3 back. Did she acknowledge it or thank me? H*LL NO! But if it saves my a$$ from a undeserved neg, gray doughnut or star dings, then it was worth it.

I used to sell 3x what I sell now with 3x less the problems. You can refuse the return request, but you should do it fairly quick after you get the request. So far, unless the buyer claims SNAD afterwards, eBay is respecting the denial of the return request. For no returns sellers anyway.

The more sob stories that someones uses the less likely I am to believe them. It's like they are only telling you that so you feel sorry for them and will just drop the issue altogether and give them what they want.

I wouldn't send her anything without a photo.
I hope she's not lying about the brain tumors. I hate that. It's a disgusting thing to do. Her wording about negative feedback is a red flag as well.

I am always so tempted to call their bluff and email back saying something like I'm sorry about your husband, my brother is a neurological oncologist and networks with other physicians across the country, who is your doctor, I bet my brother knows him or her. But I'd be afraid that the person is actually telling the truth.
