I mailed a first class package on the 19th, from Houston TX to Ann Arbor MI. Yesterday the buyer contacts me that the delivery estimate was 2/24 and it hadn't been delivered, and did I have any info as to the delay? I checked the tracking and it showed it had left San Antonio, TX on 2/24.
I called 1-800-ASK-USPS. I asked if it had been miss-routed. I was told no that first of all First Class can take up to 10 days, and second of all the packages were sent to "whatever sorting center was available to take them at the time." I was wondering if anyone else has ever heard of this?
San Antonio is nowhere near Houston (almost 200 miles) and I don't believe I have ever had a package "routed" to San Antonio unless it was actually going there. We have a sorting facility here, so I have no idea if this is true?

I had something from NC shipped to me last Friday. Expected delivery was Monday. It is arriving today. I think the wacky weather across the mid to lower states has affected shipping.

IMO, all these CS reps make up whatever comes into their mind just like the ebay CS reps do.
I had a package that was mailed to an address in Maine take a trip from San Antonio to Anchorage, Alaska where it kept bouncing in and out of the that sort center. I called the ASK USPS number too and he told me that some routes from San Antonio to Maine may go through Anchorage. I actually laughed and gave him a "Seriously". He did file an inquiry or whatever they call it and the next day it was on it's way to Maine.
I asked my local post office guy about it and he had a good laugh. He said that when a package gets misdirected like that, it usually gets on the wrong sorting belt somewhere down the line. Maybe that is why your package made a stop over here in San Antonio before it went on it's way.
A sorting belt issue makes more sense to me then all the malarkey these CS reps spit out.

I am not sure about the sorting centers but I think the USPS did up the time for first class awhile back. I thought it was more related to letters not packages but I guess I'm wrong. When is someone going to let Ebay in on this with their crazy delivery time estimates?

I know that everything that I've mail or received goes through either Federal Way, WA or Kent, WA sorting centers. They are both 150-160 miles away from Portland, OR.

Fed Way and Kent are HUGE centers. My packages all go OUT through Fed Way, about half of my incoming packages come through there and the other half through Kent.

Ha ha, you are probably correct! That definitely sounds more believable.

Yes, there was a recent change in regards to FC & sorting centers. I remember reading about it either here or on the other board. There was a link to an article or press release. The gist was that it may take longer for FC mail & that it could go to sorting centers out of the area. It was maybe a month ago if you want to search for the post.
So, I don't think the rep was blowing smoke, nor do I think that 200m is far at all for mail to go to a sorting center 'out of it's way'. They are regional, the mail doesn't go in a direct route.

Very interesting, I didn't realize that! I actually googled it and found out they just closed our downtown sorting center, although there is still one on the north side of the city. I guess I should watch the news more, lol. I actually find it depressing and don't watch it too much.

I had something go from back east, make a stop in Troutdale, OR (about 5 miles from me), go up to Kent (150), then back to Gresham/Portland where I am. Seems pretty inefficient to me since it traveled an extra 300 miles total. LOL
