Padded flat-rate envelope current 6.80 proposed 7.20WTH? You know what really pisses me off with the post office? They keep hiking prices and lowering service. PO by me has cut counter hours AND moved the last pickup from the blue boxes to an earlier time. It's as if they're making changes for the convenience of the #$^$%% employees, not the customers. Apparently the USPS has never heard of scheduling software that allows a company to predict busy times and staff accordingly. Oh wait, I forgot. The Postal Union won't let them do stuff like that Screw the Union. USPS needs to go to a standard 401k like their competition. The damned retirement plan is killing them. Oh, and if they want another income stream that would make sense? Start charging for the damn packing services. I'm tired of standing in line behind someone who can't pack their own stuff and watching them tie up a postal clerk who packs for them. And then doesn't charge. You don't get free packing at UPS or FedEX, why should you get it at USPS? /rant

I just hope they keep the First Class up to 1lb at the same reasonable rate.

Might be time to look into the competition on some items...

The price increase for priority is ridiculous. Is it me, or do the increases seem so much more frequent than a few years ago?

Does anyone use the small flat rate box for anything? It's way too small. The size difference between small and medium is ridiculous, when you compare the different between medium and large.

Wonder if the legal flat rate will go up? I have been using that now instead of the padded since it is cheaper.

Thanks. Currently with my discount the legal is $5.60. So at least I hope it won't really be that high.

Isn't the legal flat rate those thin cardboard envelopes, though?

Yes those are the flimsy paper ones and I HATE those damn things.
Anyone who ships to me in those things gets FB accordingly. Ive never gotten one that wasnt damaged or ripped open.
They need to restrict their use only for flat paper items.

When I first started selling on Ebay, I sold a pair of jeans that were about a size 44 x 32 or something like that. The buyer absolutely INSISTED that they would fit in a legal envelope. I tried 3 times to fit it in and it ripped every time. I told him he would have to pay for regular PM box or cancel. He paid.

I love the padded PM mailers and they're only around $0.30 more to the buyer. If a buyer can't spring for that, they don't need to be buying period.

I never overstuff the legals.

It's not the overstuffing, Denise, it's the fact that with anything but flat paper they get torn up in handling. Flats are handled differently. Anything above the flats (more than 1/4" I think) gets sent through a different process, and it's rough. I've watched several specials on how mail sorting is done. I've also never gotten one of those cardboard envelopes that hasn't been torn, and they're frequently wet as well. They just can't take package handling and were never meant to.
It would be better if they made legal size flat rate bubble packs. Like the new up to 15.9 oz first class rate, it would save a lot of money.
But it might be moot, because once again the little guys are getting squeezed and if this keeps up, it's going to drive yet more of us out of business. My discounts with Etsy are smaller than eBay, but at least there's usually not the fight over postage.

Okay, thanks for the info-I never had a complaint, but I quit using the legals for a long time until the padded price went up. These were the items that I had free shipping on.
Will start to use the padded again.

I can see why you wanted to use them, then. The only other thing I can think of is to make sure they're covered with good clear packing tape fore, aft and once around the middle. The corners get ripped off, or they're punctured in the middle, then torn. That's the most common damage I see. That might help.

Um, you might want to just offer First Class for free shipping items. Less money out of your pocket and easier to add the cost to the item price.
Just a thought.

I tape across the middle, thus hitting the address on the shipping label, and then once right under the tear strip-from end to end. I offer Free FC on 13 ounces and under. I don't understand the thing with the 14 ounces + for FC.

I use them too and just basically cover the whole thing in tape if it's a thick item. Stinks the legal will be higher now.

You can use FC for up to 15.9 oz. I stop at 15 oz though, just to be safe.

I don't understand the thing with the 14 ounces + for FC. Then just use a strip at the bottom end (I had one of those tyveks come apart in handling and lose one of my customer's items! Now I have to tape the bottom and top of those things, too. Don't worry about the FC to 15.9 - it's calculated for you on creating the shipping label - for some reason either PB or eBay hasn't programmed in the calculation so it comes up with the old priority amount, but discounts to first class. It has really REALLY saved money and hassle for me and my buyers because so many things are between 13 oz and like 15.5 oz. Or are JUST 13.5 oz and I'm grinding my teeth because postage goes up $2.50. Go ahead and take advantage of it, it'll save you good money!

Ok thanks. I read so many complaints about the buyers being charged for PR, so I didn't want to take the chance.

Ebay made an announcement a while back about contacting them (eBay) when this happens.

If an items weighs over 13oz but less than a pound, I put 13oz into the shipping area when listing. Then when I print the label, I put in the correct weight. If you enter 14oz on the SYI form, it will charge your buyer for Priority Mail.

Oh, you guys are talking about 3rd party listing software? Yes, that would be confusing if it doesn't match up.

I list on InkFrog so don't know what would happen. I know that I will NOT be going back over all of my listings to change them. But in the future if something is over 13 ounces and I have FS, I will try the 14 or 15 oz.
