I have always used an HTM editor but I just lost it in a computer crash and would have to pay for the current version. If I format the listing in Word (just a simple listing with one or two tables) and paste it into the SYI will it render correctly in the listing? I don't want to waste time formatting templates if they wont render properly.
TYI.

Yes. As long as you use HTML markup and past it into the HTML tab in the listing it makes no difference.

I'm not so sure. People used to use word to copy/paste their stuff into TL and it was always borked up. Microsoft throws a lot of crap into documents made with it. I have not used this but it seems to be good for getting rid of the crap word2cleanhtml.com/Regardless, make sure you test it out before going live with it in your listings. And there are free open source html editors - why not use one of them?

I don't use third party listing so I guess I wouldn't know about that. I just write the HTML in a word document, making sure all tags are closed, then paste it into the HTML panel of the eBay listing. I've written my own HTML using Word since about 1999, and used to just write all my own templates. You can use notebook or whatever to write it, it doesn't matter. Ragtag is good for self-checking tags. RagTag
