I've sold quite a bit of the costume jewelry I got for FREE. There's a lot left and most of it is sorted, some is marked, most of the rest is not worth much so will be lotted up somday. But here are some that are different and I was wondering if I can get any input. Keywords? Value? Not marked and I don't know what to call them so cannot look them up. TIA (also eye candy for all who like this stuff )

Okay, that's a brooch and it came out huge. Probably 2" wide but it is tall because it's small domes piled on top of other small domes. It has tiny "emeralds" and "diamonds" is beautifully made, and it's maybe 1" high from the side. The main center stones stump me--they are not solid stones --they look like bits of white glass put together and they have flecks of gold in them. Here's the back, it's so nicely made but not marked. eta: stacked brooch? (I am still researching)

Now for this flashy necklace. Is this aurora borealis? or what??

The brooch is very interesting; never seen anything like it. Beyond the obvious, prong-set rhinestones, I say "confetti cabochon". It's not necessarily quite technically right but it will draw people who might appreciate the piece. The second was does not look AB to me unless your flash drove it crazy. Looks more like carnival glass from the pic.

Thanks for your insight. After more research, I am thinking the brooch might be foil (can't remember the correct term & am on phone.) It's a technique.
Also, the necklace? Aurola borealis means it's been treated with a metallic finish to make it flash like that. Sort of like carnival glass but this really is bright and it flashes.
I don't know enough to list them. Thanks again--I hope you're having good luck selling yours

Did you take that necklace picture with the flash? Try taking a picture in natural sunlight, that might show the colors more accurately.
It might be "watermelon aurora borealis" - that has deeper colors than the more pastel AB.

It flashes bright rainbow colors, reflecting any colors that are in the room, it seems. I'll google watermelon aurora borealis.

That's what this necklace looks like. Not marked though. I've been googling and I think you're right about watermelon. I don't mean to be pushy but any idea of how to price this? Any idea of how to price the brooch that has either foil or confetti? The brooch has little gold metallic bits in it that sparkle. There are other things ? in there too but they don't sparkle. I know I'm in over my head with most of this stuff and I truly appreciate the help.

"confetti cabochon"--Frakin, after looking through four books on costume jewelry today, I agree. Man on man, there's a lot of know about this stuff and I feel pretty dumb.

Well, at least you feel confident about your choice. Hope you make good $$$$. Thank you on the good money wishes. I have no idea what I'm doing. For the junky stuff, it's fine but for anything that might be worth something, if I can't find it in a book or on ebay, I'm sunk. I now have a large plastic bag full of stuff to take to the jeweler. If he doesn't know, I'll take it to the pawn shop and see if I can trick them into telling me. I'll pretend I want to pawn in. Maybe I WILL pawn some of it.

That's a good idea for a price. Thank you --I am skeered to list some of these unknowns.
Believe me, I have researched ebay and websites AND the library books but sometimes I just come up with nothing.
It feels better having someone like you and frankin giving me suggestions.

I suspect Frakin knows a whole lot more than I do about vintage jewelry! I'm pretty good with keywords but not so much on pricing.

I'd go 35 on the brooch. You can always reduce it if you get antsy. I don't know about the necklace. You have to gauge the quality of the piece. Certainly 40 sounds very reasonable for it as ahrn suggests. But I've sold unsigned pieces of obvious quality for more.

I've written it down for future reference because I think I have fried my brain trying to do too much lately. This nice woman gave me 3 cartons!!!!!!! of costume jewelry. Some seem special and I have sold them individually but others that seem special are these mysteries. From what I see in my research, I may as well lot some of the not so great ones up by theme (like figures, musical instruments, color, etc.) and throw a marked one in there as long as it's not really great and put them on auction. Like ONE marked butterfly brooch doesn't seem to do that well but one marked butterfly brooch along with 9 mediocre butterfly brooches at auction does pretty well. I sell to dealers who have shops off ebay, from what I've been seeing. /end of blabbing about costume jewelry. Brain dead.
