My daughter, a Hello Kitty/Sanrio aficionado went to this site: Sanrio , but came up empty. She said if you go through it and find something, she'd be happy to help translate if you need it to be done. She did want to know if on the back of the purse thing, if the two white strips (bar code & trademark) were stickers or printed on. Not that they necessarily are, but she did say that it looked like a knock-off to her. Hopefully, you'll find something at the Sanrio site or someone with more knowledge will come along.

1995 was just, like, yesterday 20 years ago. GULP!
I'm of no help. Sorry.

UGh I know-- NEW this year-- vintage 1995. Doesn't quite roll off the tongue yet.
Midnight-- the white bars are not stickers, they are printed on the cardboard. I have never seen any Sanrio characters that looked like this, not that I am an expert, but I do sell it from time to time. I appreciate your daughter's offer of translation help!

I think that if it were a knock-off, either they characters would be recognizable,or close versions of a known character....because there's no point to making fake Sanrio if the only thing that could fool the buyer is a small brand name on the back.

Midnight-- would your daughter be able to translate what the papers say? Each one has different Japanese characters on it, and that might give me a clue as to who these animals are.

I don't think they are knock offs either. Just doesn't make sense but maybe they were made for a different market. Of course they have English on the label and drawings (like the panda headphones) so maybe not. I haven't come up with anything like them by looking around.

She isn't here right now, but she told me last night:
purse - dog pandas with headphones - music qp is really close to the name of a Sanrio character, but I forget which one she said. last one - it says "what" or something like that.
I'll ask for definite clarification when she gets home. The only one I can read is "dog".
We also thought it might be some kind of mash-up between Sanrio and some other company's characters, but had no clue as to what they might be.

My daughter is home and the character that sounds like qp is Kyupi, which looks nothing like what is here... and the last one does say "what". She wondered about the white bars because if they had been stickers, that may have indicated a knock-off. Glad to hear that they are printed on the purse.
That's all we have on this end. Sorry we couldn't be more help!

I've sold Sanrio Hello Kitty clothing (kimonos from Japan) and the tags have the stickers on them. Also the Hello Kitty rice and chopstick keepers did. These were post 2003, though.
There are loads and loads of little Sanrio critters. I have a stack of Sanrio stationary here and every single piece seems to have different critters on them. I've given up trying to ID them.
