eBay (and eBay sellers) lost a LOT of free advertising when they killed the boards.

I don't think they'll be that successful.
They killed the boards with all their micromanaging and banning water cooler talk.
It's going to be hard to build it back up especially with all the facebook groups. There's much more freedom in offsite groups.

They're not coming back. The "Fashion" board is a joke - all Coach purses with a few stray questions. Beth soldiers on with her GMM thread, which is a tiny remaining survival of the old forums.
Those forums provided a huge resource - the old VCA (not the post-Zombie one) was even written up in a publication as one of the most relevant discussions of vintage online - the writer (I wish I could find the article) cited that reading it was like sitting in on a discussion of top vintage dealers and the most knowledgeable resources. That board went down the drain years ago, but there were others - the textiles board had everybody who knew everything about textiles, heck dating back to Coptic times. The photography board was a goldmine of information and talk. If you could get past the sophomoric posturing the Booksellers board had incredible knowledge. All had archives. This was wiped out by an act of complete ignorance and incompetence. It's not coming back - the world has moved on.

I could forgive eBay for tweaking or changing the boards but to delete the archives was unforgivable. I agree- people are gathered elsewhere where you can speak freely. Trust is a glue that holds boards together... they wiped that out when they farmed out to Lithium & whoever came before them.

LiveWorld was the previous board admin and they actually did a good job, and hosted the boards for years as far as I know. It's lithium that has the gawd-ugly formatting (all of that rubbish when one firsts clicks into 'community', the cluttered sidebars, etc.), stupid mods editing people's posts, etc. When eBay destroyed the boards, they brought Lithium in as a host. What amazes me is that Terrell didn't even have a clue as to the forums before then - he said he'd never seen them, had no idea they were so busy nor about the structure.
Typical eBay - decide to do something based on no knowledge or research, then place an incompetent in charge of it.

Liveworld was before Lithium and did a decent job. Lithium and Donohoe destroyed one of eBay's best assets.

I read that Terrell is no longer at ebay, left or was shoved out last year some time.

Yeah, I think he decided to spend more time with his family was canned. He was pretty useless. Now those weekly chats are worse than every - all they have is Uncle Grief! He's like white space. I think there was a pretty clear realization that the revamp was a real fail.

We owned a florist for 15 years and were in FTD. They had a forum that was really great. A lot of idea sharing for creativity and business. As soon as folks started questioning policies and talking g sbou way too high fees they shut the boards down. It worked out because new independent boards started ( like this one) and were better anyway.

There is definitely a heavy editorial presence on that board now. I don't post there much because I don't like some amateur tampering with my words, but the change-over had the same effect of driving everyone off. The "fashion" board is mostly just strings of purse questions.

I do read over there and post occasionally when I know an answer to something. But the incessant Coach posts is maddening.

Really? Did eBay get a new forum provider? The "Fashion Board" will all the danged purse posts drives me nuts. It is apparently a work in progress. We have been told to wait to see what happens with a new provider. The girls have been told giving info on authenticators will be permitted. Waiting to see.

Authentications are fine - just move the purses to their own area. Like they used to be. Worked really well

If the purses are moved to their own area, that fashion board will really be dead.

Worked really well If you notice, Alberta and Fashion have stopped authenticating each and every bag posted by some of the same posters. They pick a couple. They are tired of those sellers buying stuff they don't know and continuously flipping them and taking advantage of them.

I heard Uncle Grief killed it.
I don't understand the preoccupation with designer purses myself, but the market is significant and has significant issues - authentication, avoiding counterfeits, site rules for listing, that require specialist knowledge. They could use a purse board to actually increase status on eBay since it's a lucrative market and a forum devoted to it would only increase the authenticity and value of the purse category. But they don't understand merchandising.

My personal (conspiracy) theory is that Donohoe didn't like the forums and thought they were just part of the seller noise. I think Wenig realizes just how much free search engine exposure eBay lost when the boards died (a LOT). Acquiring organic, free search engine exposure is a lot more valuable than squelching the random disgruntled seller comment.

Acquiring organic, free search engine exposure is a lot more valuable than squelching the random disgruntled seller comment. They also handled a lot of customer service so ebay's had to bring on more script readers = $$ And this random disgrunteled seller will be 'squelched' until the end of the month. I was a 'bad girl' cause some poor guy asked about handmade items needing product identification numbers for ebay, nobody was answering him so I popped in with, 'list 'em on etsy' and got a month on the pink island. They don't even have the courtesey to send you an email to tell you; you only know when you try to log in and see 'you are banned'.

But they don't understand merchandising. You are right Chap. I don't know diddly about purses except for a few brands but I do know a little about marketing. They could use the board to create somewhat of a Cache and appearance of authority and like someone else said the organic search exposure is huge.
