I have had my card for several years, ever since I read about it on the PS board. It adds an extra layer of security in case hackers get your passwords. It is credit card sized, you push a button on the card and see a one-time 6 digit code to sign in.
Admittedly it is a PITA, but I feel more secure with it.
Anywho, my PayPal sign-in today would not accept the code, so I had to call PayPal. The rep told me that they are phasing the card out, although it still works in eBay.
PayPal has started a new system where the security code is texted to your cell phone...you just have to call them to set it up.

I read somewhere that they hacked the 'key' so it wasn't 'safe'. Kinda depends on how you were 'hacked'. Someone rides in on yet another zero-day flash exploit and gains access to your computer, ain't gonna do nuttin to him since he has access to your email.

I've never heard of it before.

Don't know if I buy the hacker theory. It is not the PayPal Debit card and if a hacker got my email, he also got into my PayPal account info. The cards do take maintenance and this is my third one since they just quit working. It follows the new credit card concept of giving a new 6 digit number every time that you use it.
Also, the rep said (and I agree), that we all have cell phones to get the number. I could never access my PP account when not at home since I don't carry the card with me. Now the 6 digit number is texted to my cell and then I can get into PP.

What I meant was that it offers no more security than anything else. Didn't they even charge you $5 for it? Which if it actually DID work wonders for security, I'd wonder why they didn't institute it for everyone immediately and just have it as part of the account, not as an 'extra' you can pay for.

It was initally free several years ago. But now they have been charging $20 for the card. You can see the info about it in the security section of PP, and even eBay.
To have the code sent to your cell is free.
The card is still good with eBay, so far. I do think it offers security, since I can't get into eBay or PP without accessing the new code.
