Well crap! I know I've seen the July Vegas celebration advertised. Now I can't find anything official or a sign up. "Our Next eBay Gathering We know that the connections between eBay, the seller community and between sellers are critical. Which is why I’m excited to announce that – based on the great feedback we got on our 20th anniversary celebration in San Jose last year - we’re going to have another eBay gathering. This year, we will host our celebration in Las Vegas from July 26th – 29th, where you can expect more educational sessions and exciting guest presenters. Be on the lookout as we begin to share more information about the event in April. Like last year, there will be a limited number of available spots so be sure to secure yours as soon as registration opens." for-business.ebay.com/2016-spring-seller-update-better-benefits-tools-and-experiences-sellers

Just clicked and read through the last link. Makes me SO GLAD I left the eBay community when I did. That entire thread just sounds like a bunch of freaking whiners.

Thanks, Liz. I knew I'd read it somewhere. That's my busy week of the month, so I'm out. Bummer, because I'd really like to go to one.

I know - I can't blame people on that thread for cracking up. As for these "Shine Awards", eBay wants to Etsy-ize now - I don't see this doing well unless they get someone competent from the outside to do it, they've screwed up just about every single campaign they've ever done because no one thinks things through. The two worst examples I can think of was Bralicious the scam seller being promoted a some kind of big success story (which got half the old boards sent to the pink island), and which torpedoed the entire campaign, and that awful "Your father called..." father's day campaign.

Yes. Vegas in July. I really, truly and honestly don't understand what is SO bad about that. It's hot. So what? The event will be inside. While it's not PERFECT, and yes it will be hot, I don't understand why it's actually something to gripe about.

So then why can't they try again? And try and make it right? No awards system is perfect. You nominate yourself, then get voted on. $10K grand prize, 1 year anchor store, store makeover and more, with other prizes being thrown in. The ONLY reason I won't nominate myself (not that I would have a great chance of winning) is because of the haters, naysayers and negative AF people like on the eBay thread that will find every reason to tear another seller down.

Vegas in July is fine, if you like the fires of Hell.
I dont go to Vegas to stay inside of one place the entire time I am there. I want to go out to other locations, stroll the strip, people watch, shop, etc. If I'm going to pay to go to Vegas I want to enjoy Vegas, not the inside of one building because it's too damn hot to go anyplace else. And I live in a hot climate, so I am used to summer heat, for people who aren't it can be total Hell.
IMO it is a very poor choice.

But, Shirley, it is a dry heat. But, then again, I have never had the desire to go to an ebay thing anyway even it is was here in my hood.

LOL I have never been to Vegas in the summer but was in Phoenix in summer several times during my working years and that was hot enough.
I come from a heat zone too but at least you can sit down on car seats without a towel on the seat or touch the steering wheel without scorching your hands here during the summer.
But, if you plan to stay inside the convention area or the casinos the whole time, then go for it. They are air conditioned.

They probably picked Vegas so attendees would not get too bored with all the boring.
Vegas in August, you can crack an egg on the hood of a car and it will fry in about 5 minutes. I've seen it!

I expect they chose Vegas because it may be cheaper in the summer? It's tough to book trade shows in Vegas in the winter (I got used to the trade show circuit when I worked in data mining) as it's popular. Yet summer is traditionally the slow season for trade shows and they would have their pick of venues.
A BIG part of having a trade show/conference in the marketing/sales sector is the other amenities offered - the chance to see surrounding sights and various other attractions. It's one reason why so many cities like to be on the trade show circuit. So I'm not getting Vegas in July at all (I have been there in July - it was 120). I almost went to the one in San Jose but I'm not subjecting myself to being trapped inside a building because it's broiling hot out - even if it's a dry kind of heat lol.

All hot and hot/humid convention cities are considerably cheaper in the summer. That's why businesses pick those cities, if the business usually has a summer trade show/conference.

I was in Vegas in July, we have a picture of the digital thermometer on the side of building reading 111 degrees at 8am. I burned the soles of my feet through my shoes the cement and asphalt are so hot. It is a dry heat and the 111 didn't feel as hot as 90 degrees around Maryland with the humidity but it is still miserable hot.

I'm the odd person here. I walk outside in Vegas in July/August, after the below 0 arctic temps of the casinos, and stand in the sun soaking up the heat. I love it.

I think I would, too, just to warm up from those meat locker temperatures. I realise it's difficult to air condition sealed buildings but there's simply no reason to have them to the point where people have to bundle up.

Anyway, I'm more interested in the small business awards, I do think it's a great idea, I just don't trust eBay to implement it well and hope they've gotten some good marketing help for this. They're an elderly internet company, not a new startup where continual mistakes are part of the learning process - they should have figured this stuff out by now, or at least know who to consult with. So, we'll see.
ETA: I went back to the thread Liz posted - good grief. It was only a few pages long when I first read it. I went back and it's pages long now and I nearly sprained my eyeballs rolling them before I just gave up. The OP did come back with more info, though.

I think the sellers that Ebay wants to win will be the ones that win.
No matter how they spin it, I don't think it will be an even playing field.
