We returned Saturday from a 4 day cruise. I fell on the third day and I knew I had broken something in my foot. We got a wheelchair and my DH pushed me around that last day.
Sunday morning I went to Urgent Care and they x-rayed it and gave me a DVD. They put a molded splint and a boot and told me to see my doctor asap. Well, today is Presidents Day and my doctors office is closed. I am hobbling around with a walker. I will call in the morning.
Has anyone had any experience with this type of fracture? I so do not want to be in a cast for 8 weeks. I am hoping that I can wear a boot.

A cowoker broke her foot playing indoor soccer. She's been in a walking boot for about 2 weeks, has about 5 to go or so. But she can take it off at night to go to bed. She's using crutches, you might look at those instead of the walker as it seems like there would be less weight on the injured foot with the crutches.

Ugh, sorry to hear this! I had the same injury a few years ago -- I broke my fifth metatarsal while running to answer the door for the UPS guy! I tripped and landed on the side of my foot. The kicker is I didn't even need to answer the door, he just left the package on the stoop since it didn't need a signature. I didn't have a cast, just kept it wrapped in an ace bandage for several weeks. I did use crutches for about 4 weeks. Mostly I stayed off my foot, scooted up and down the stairs on my behind (and really built up my arm muscles in the process). The worst part for me was not being able to drive for nearly 2 months, something I dearly love. One thing that really helped was getting a tub transfer chair so I could shower. We found one at a TS (where else?) for only $5 and it was wonderful to have. The break healed smoothly, I still get an occasional tinge of pain (usually weather-related) but it's never very strong and doesn't last long. I hope your DH is a good nurse (mine wasn't .

My son fractured his ankle and top of foot while roller blading a few years ago. He was able to just wear the boot for the whole healing process. Was about 9 weeks for him I think. First 2 weeks he was only allowed to remove his for a shower, but he was not allowed to step onto it so had to balance in the shower with it lightly on the floor. Then after 2 weeks and a redone xray he was able to take it off at night for sleeping but again not allowed to step on it. He had to put it back on if he got up to go to the bathroom or anything. He wasn't allowed to walk in the boot for the first 4 or 5 weeks, had to use crutches. Then after that he was allowed to walk in just the boot. All in all he had 4 xrays and a MRI on it. That was a very expensive school field trip.
Hope yours is much easier and you can just hobble around with the boot on for a few weeks.

I had a fracture on the top of my foot and did not need a cast. Not sure if it was the exact same injury though since I did not fall.
One thing I would say though, is if the Dr tells you to stay off of it, listen - I did not, and then I started having problems with my opposite hip from the extra weight and I still do. It's not horrible but I am 99% sure it was a result of that foot injury.

My DH fractured his 5th metatarsal when he fell on ice and also ripped his knee. He wore a tight-laced ankle brace to keep the foot rigid, and then a cast boot. The bone would not heal after many months so he needed surgery to put a screw in it. I was shocked when I saw the X-ray - it was a good size screw - I thought it was going to be something the size of a common pin.
The screw bothered him quite a bit and they removed it about a year later. He hasn't had any problems with it since. Hope you feel better and heal quickly!

I hope you feel better fast. I broke one of my toes a few years ago. I didn't do anything but hobble around. I did tape it to the toe next to it to straightened it out. A walking shoe is a good idea.
Oh I know it hurts like hell!

TWICE. Not once but twice I have had broken bones in my foot. Because I am equal opportunity to my body I have had em broken on both feet. Neither time did I go see a doctor. Both times they were found out at a different appt where x-rays needed to be done for something totally different. I broke several...as in 3 ... metatarsal bones and 2 toe bones (phalanges) when I was around 14-15 when a steer stepped on my right foot. Ya, it hurt and it hurt for a while but I HATE doctors and just blew it off and never said anything about it to my parents. This was found out when I jacked up my ankle playing basketball a year later and went in for x-rays and the dr asked about the broken bones and did my foot hurt blah blah. Those bones didn't heal quite like they should <<<<----according to the dr who I think was a bit dramatic he was amazed I could walk without pain. Pffft. I SAW the dang x-rays and it was probably at MOST a 64th of an inch not lined up. Nothing to lose sleep over. I will say on this one I did have pain for maybe 6 months but since then even knowing I did nothing and mr drama dr I have never had pain in that foot. On my left foot I broke/cracked/chipped my calcaneus ( heel bone). This one was playing football and again I never saw a dr. I was around 21. That one hurt forever and then it was fine. This one was found when I shredded my achilles tendon when I was around 33 playing volleyball. I wasn't going to go to the dr for that either but after 3 days it wasn't getting better and my foot flomped around so I figured I should go in. Because it was so old the dr wasn't sure exactly what I had done, only that he was amazed it healed and I had no pain. I did have to have surgery for my achillies tendon and I DID drive my standard tranny with a cast on. No it's not easy shifting with plaster of paris adorning your foot and half your leg but...eh. As you can tell I am NOT fond of drs and unless they really need to cut me open I don't go. I don't think I have a single finger that hasn't been broken at least 2-3 times and I've NEVER had a single one of them taken care of by a dr. I've always just pulled the finger straight and then splinted it. I hope yours heals fast. I have found though that many of these types of injuries are now taken care of with an air cast vs a plaster cast.

I have never heard of an air cast. What is it?

I am hard on my body. Playing sports I go all out. No wussy flag or touch football for me lol tackle all the way. Several of the fingers were either football or basketball.
I'm an old farm girl so a couple of those finger breaks were farm issues. I should be glad it was only a small break....think how many old time farmers you saw missing a couple fingers or even a hand.
Construction is where the rest of them happened. Something gets slammed down or what have you.
I have never had a what you could call major broken bone. No arms or legs. Just leetle ones that I can ignore.
And again I just go all out with obviously no regard for my body at times lol. I did have a bone density test done a couple years ago. Ya I'm way younger than recommended but my mom has poor bone density and I am a smoker. My bone density is excellent.
As far as an air cast. It's pretty much like it sounds. They usually fasten on with velcro. They are about the same makeup as a plaster cast but these plasticky type things filled with air. Most air casts they put on feet are used in conjunction with one of those removable walking boots.

I still have the splint on that they gave me at Urgent Care. Yesterday was a holiday and my doctor was closed. Today he is in surgery so I have an appointment for 8:45 tomorrow a.m. I am hoping for a boot or an air cast. I do not want a plaster one. This splint that I have on is so heavy and uncomfortable, not to mention it gives me a back ache because I am uneven.

IF you get a walking cast you are still going to be uneven. I went to payless and looked for tennis shoes that had a high/huge sole so I would be even. I then asked if they had any in back that might be mismatched in size from someone prior. I lucked out as they had a set with the LH shoe in my size and the other 2 sizes smaller and IIRC they sold me the single shoe for all of like 5.00. This was back in 2000 so I have no idea if they'll still sell oddball shoes like that or not but it might be worth a try.

That's a really clever idea, Harley. I bet you could get a pair of Skechers Shape-Ups on eBay fairly cheaply.
Speaking of which: Shape-Ups were the most comfortable shoes I could find after my foot healed. All that extra cushioning felt great - I still wear them today. Clarks and Orthaheel are really good, too.

What a crummy way to end a vacation. So sorry you were injured. I sold an Air Cast on ebay-- so check there. I found it in the bins, it was like new, still in the box. Also, you might want to google supplements that promote bone healing. One of my co-workers from my last job broke her ankle, and she took a few weeks off her cast time, due to taking supplements.

I'm sorry you were hurt. I dropped a full bottle of champagne on top of my foot a few months ago. The champagne didn't break but my foot still hurts sometimes when it rains. It was black & blue for 6 weeks. I didn't even get to drink the champagne either.

((((atdahop)))) Sorry to hear of your unfortunate accident! I had the experience of shattering the outside of my foot 20 yrs ago, when I tripped over a large roll of carpeting and trying to brace myself, landed hard on concrete. The pain was unbearable so it was a trip to the ER and orthopedic doc.
I was on crutches for a few days, but hated them. Lucky for me, my break would not have benefited from a cast so I got a boot. Nothing stopped me with that. I didn't miss any work and wound up driving 2500 miles in it! And the best part was, I only wore it for 7-weeks. The Dr. was amazed that it healed as quick as it did, since the break is supposed to be the hardest type to heal.
As an aside, I also shattered the outside of my left hand 5-yr ago, falling off a wet curb. But, I pulled a Harleychick stunt and didn't seek medical attention for 18 days. By then I had no choice because my hand was 3x it's normal size and I could not move it. But they couldn't find the break! A subsequent trip for more X-rays finally showed the fracture and I was fitted with a custom molded (removable) cast. That too healed quite fast, which was surprising because I have depleted BMD.
Positive thoughts for fast healing!

I just returned from the doctor. It is an avulsion fracture and I am in a Cam Walker. I am so grateful that I don't have to have a plaster cast. At least I can shower.
Harley........Great advice, I went to Payless and asked but had no luck so I bought a pair of heels...can't remember the last time I wore a pair...I am strictly a flats and sneakers gal..These are at least a 2-1/2 " wedge but it makes me feel even with the boot. I was worried about back pain if I was walking with an uneven gait.
Christie.....Thanks for the heads up about the supplements. I will go out later and investigate.
The worst part about this is NO DRIVING. I can take the pain but the no driving makes me crazy.
I am lucky that DH is retired so he can be at my beck and call.
I took the week off of work but will return on the 28th for the ASD show. That's the gift show. I used to get some really great deals on the last day of the show but doubt I will be able to get around the Convention Center this time. Much too much walking.
I really appreciate all the advice and good wishes.
Thank you Val for giving us this wonderful forum to come to for answers, advice and support for just about anything.

Can you rent a scooter to get around the show floor? Lots of convention centers have them. Plus, you could probably carry a lot more stuff on a scooter than you could if you were walking!

I have my own scooter that I got the year before my hip replacement (2007). I used it to go to work for a full year before my surgery. After the surgery my DH wanted to sell it but I wanted to hold on to it. Luckily I had it 2 years ago when I fractured my pelvis and I used it to get around the show floor. Now I will use it when I return to work. It really does not hold much, a tiny basket in the front. If I did not have the scooter I would not be able to work at all. A lot of my co-workers say to stay out on disability which I could qualify for but it is not in me to do that. If I can get to work, I will work.

Pimp your scooter!
Glad to hear you don't have to have a cast. Wish I could send you some magical quick-healing dust. How did you break your pelvis?

Pimp your scooter! Glad to hear you don't have to have a cast. Wish I could send you some magical quick-healing dust. How did you break your pelvis? Happened 2 years ago in may. I was walking in the back of one of the Concession Stands. There was grease on the floor because they were using the stand to cook the food needed in a Portable Stand and they were careless. I slipped on the grease and fell. When I landed on my right side (hip replacement side) I could barely move I was in such pain. Went to Concentra which is the workman comp medical center, since it was a work related accident. They x-rayed me but missed the fracture. After about 2 months of therapy and doctor visits I was still complaining about pain they finally decided to send me for an MRI. Because I had had the hip replacement that turned out to be worthless. So again I had to wait to get approval for a CT. Immediately and I mean immediately following the CT I had to go to the doctor at Concentra where they told me I had a fracture of the pelvis. They next sent me to an orthopedic doctor, next day. By this time it was 2 months out from the accident and there was nothing to be done. Just had to let it heal slowly. In the meantime I still continued to work, I only missed 2 days, never knowing that I was working with this fracture. I went to work using my scooter. I should have been on bed rest. \ I probably should have seen a lawyer but I am just not like that. I wish you had some magic dust for me. I hate, hate not being able to drive. At least I didn't have to have a permanent cast.
