I read the first book and then kind of lost interest.

I haven't. As of now, I'm not really planning to either.
Does anyone know if the movie is based off of the first book, or all 3 of them combined.
I just finished the second book yesterday. I feel it moved a lot faster than the first book, and tied up some loose ends left from the first book. But of course, at the end....it totally opens itself up for the third.
I normally get into murder/suspense/forensics types books. Occasionally I like chic lit. Very occasionally. But I really like the two 50 books and can't wait to start the third.

I read all 3 books and thought...there is 5-6 hours of my life I'll never get back. I found all 3 at the GW a couple years ago and heard all the raving so I "had" to read them. Midway through the first book I HATED the characters. I really had to force myself to finish the whole 3 books.
Most times I don't like a book just because it's either boring or something like that. This whole trillogy....I am beyond baffled at how it became such a best seller. Literally floored.
IDGAF if an author wants to write sex scenes. IDGAF if someone wants to or is into bondange, S&M or anything else other than vanilla. I am pretty hard to offend or care what anyone else wants to do in the bedroom or out AS LONG AS BOTH parties are in agreement and it's all consensual.
Not only was this quite possibly one of the WORST descriptions of how that type of relationship/lifestyle should work but BOTH characters were quite possibly the most clueless, spineless, wishy washy, insecure people I have ever read about. FTLOG....I am still just stunned that all three books made it to print let alone a movie deal.
WHO CARES if the main character is richer than god?! He's still a douche. An insecure, jackazz of a person. And the fact she puts up with this crap in the name of love? WTF is this saying?!
And then to hear all these women babble about how much they'd love to find a guy like Christian. WTF. It makes me question their mental capacities. So NO I have NO as in less than 0 desire to see the movie.
You want to write a racy book with hot sexy scenes...fine. You want to write a book with sex scenes that have BSDM...fine. But the whole way the scenario was written just really made me want to alternate between smacking the heck out of both main characters and screaming....THIS IS MENTALLY WRONG on so many levels.
The funny thing is I am probably one of the most open minded people when it comes to what CONSENTING adults want to do when it comes to sex.

I have zero intentions of seeing the movie. Read the first book and then skimmed the others...not impressed.
It's like one of those old Harlequin romance books on steroids. I don't read romance novels.

Haven't seen the movie. Quite possibly the worst BDSM book I've ever read & I've read them all. There are many quality books in this genre, this isn't one of them. I never read 2 & 3 b/c the of the poor writing. This is also not a good representation of consensual kink. It is fantasy, a bodice ripper really, just with a tiny bit of kink thrown it. To be perfectly palatable to middle America (or Britain). The while "richer than god" thing is such a romance fantasy. Not that there's anything wrong with romance fantasy, but call it what it is & write it well FFS.
In the fantasy realm, I would recommend the Ann Rice trilogy, (The Beauty Books), The Claiming of Sleeping Beauty & the follow ups. They were written under the pseudonym A.N. Roquelaure but I think are just sold under Anne Rice now. Also the Laura Antoniou Marketplace series books. The Rice books are of course a fairytale & both series are more hardcore than 50 Shades, but they are well written. Neither series is a representation of real BDSM relationships either, that's not their intent.

And let me clarify...
Yes, I really like them. But not in some earth shattering way. Or life changing way. Or "this is unlike anything I've ever read before" way.
It's just another way to get lost in different world.
While I really like them, I really don't understand how these books made a best sellers list either. Or why some women are oogling over them. Or why they have a fascination with "Mr. Gray".
I guess for me, they're just a fun read.

I have read the Beauty trilogy as well. Ya, it's far more hardcore and out there but dang Anne Rice can write. And you are correct in that it is not true representation of a bsdm relationship.
I mentioned the richer than god thing because sadly many women who raved about 50 shades series said that it didn't matter how he acted as long as he had money?! Excuse me. WTF kind of mentallity is that?! Money does not....or at least to me...equate to being able to be a loser jackazz just because you're rich.

It's fun getting lost in a book. It's been so long since I've read one that I was sad to finish. Miss the characters type thing...

I haven't, I also didn't read the books, I really prefer murder and suspense like shopping does. I also read or browse cookbooks, so not much time to add that to the list. The only time a read sexually explicit novels like that was junior high, at this stage of life I could write my own so I have no interest in reading anyone else's version. Many years ago I watched a movie called 9 1/2 weeks and it was good, I was surprised I liked it but I did. My feeling is this might be similar to that, so maybe a decent watch but I already saw one of those and will wait until its on cable to give t a shot. Give me another Gone Girl type of movie or a new Law & Order season and I'm ready with popcorn.

Oh no. Not at all. Of the chic lit books that I really enjoyed, they were all as poorly written LOL! "The Undomestic Goddess" The Jennifer Weiner books In reading these books, I felt like the target audience was supposed to be to young/mid 20's. "my sex"? Really? LOL! I rolled my eyes (pun, yes) every time I read that. In reading some of the words that the author chose I thought maybe they were edited by her publisher to make she she didn't cross any "ratings" line or something. |

I have not read the books nor planning to see the movie. I had a lot of friends who read and loved the books but no plans to see the movie. I'm sure casting had a lot to do with it.

The radio show I listen to had a "family friendly" reading of a section of the book this morning. He used circus terms for the "radio unmentionable" words. With circus music in the background. Funniest thing I've ever heard.  Even his crew was howling in the background. I'll have to watch for an audio clip and post the link when it's up. You don't have to read the book to appreciate the joke, either. |

I saw "9-1/2 Weeks" when it was in the theaters (ahh, the 80s!) Very slick and stylish for its time... and how can you not like a movie that has Roxy Music's "Slave to Love"? A really good film along these lines was "Secretary" with James Spader and Maggie Gyllenhaal. There've been lots of comparisons between it and 50 Shades, but Secretary got much better reviews. I went and saw it Friday. I never read the books. I enjoyed it. I thought the scenery and the overall movie was nice to look at. I thought the guy in it was HOT (my taste). I liked that they picked an actress with a real body, although of course young and it made me wish for my 20 year old body again for a least one more day.  I LOVED the music. I went straight to Target after the movie and bought the CD and it was the last one of the shelf. So my thoughts as someone who did not read the books. Basically two people with two different sets of issues (that they didn't divulge into deeply, just kinda hinted at) that are crazy attracted to each other. Then basically her trying to figure out if she wants to be his submissive. Then a few sex scenes. Then Bam- it's over. I purchased the books and I'm going to read them. Between all the "this is abuse" and "porn" comments there were people saying that the books had more in them. Of course. Hopefully I can get through what I've read, and why I never read them in the first place, the juvenile writing. |

They said most of that 81.7 million are women under the age of 30. In the book I was getting the "Mr.Gray"thing until he got really kinky then it ruined it for me. Once he blabbed about being young and taken advantage of by his mom's friend I felt sorry for him and it changed my whole view. |

I read the book because a friend of mine told me another friend of ours tried everything in that book with her husband. I read it out of curiosity, lol. Yes. This. And then it expands in the second book about his past. About what happened to him.
I'm curious to see what happens in the 3rd book and if any other revelations about his "mental being" is exposed.

I am another that shopping and I posted at the same time and NEVER would I mean to...well how do I say it, Not offend but make Liz feel bad.
Hey I get the whole reading a book that is written poorly, quite either stupid or lame and still liking it. And in thinking about some of the responses I do feel that even IF the book was better written I would still not like the characters I absolutely HATED the way the author writes.
And as a case in point of me liking some really "easy", lame, no plot stuff, call it what you will I LMAO on Sofie Kinsella and anything she writes which inclues the shopaholic series AND the undomestic goddess.
And maybe it's just me but I love the quicky British authors. I probably shouldn't even admit this lol but there is a series by Louise Rennison about a girl named Georgia Nicolson. It's a young adult type book and yet they crack me up. Maybe it's the whole british humor. Maybe it's how Georgia handles her days. Maybe it's how when the author writes she puts the times up almost as if Georgia is writing in a diary. I find these books freaken hillarious!
I do not remember what book I started with as I found it at a thrift but they all have titles that kind of catch your attention as in...
Angus, Thongs and Full-Frontal Snogging.

Everyone has their own opinions on what they think and I'm one that's cool with that. If we were all the same and had the same opinions/POVs--well, we'd all be really boring LOL!
I, too, have read all of the shopaholic books. I get lost in them.
I'm guess I'm kind of an addict when it comes to reading "series" books. I NEED to know how the whole story ends.
I'm also one that never "got" Twilight either. The books or the movies. Same with **GASP**....Harry Potter. And they were both insanely popular spread across all genders and ages.

That he started at 15 and it went on for 6 years.
