I think it was a good idea. Like eBay saying the best way for them to get to know the customer's needs is to walk in their shoes. Well, their customers are also the sellers so it makes perfect sense they should test out some of the canned BS they push on the sellers.
If thats what it took to get defects taken down, after only getting 173 feedback, I wonder if eBay can now understand how messed up some of their policies, suggestions and other nonsense really is.
Thanks for linking to that. Very interesting.

It's the most hopeful/promising/positive thing I've heard out of ebay in I don't know how long - ever? And he's not the only one doing it.

Thanks for posting this. I read some of the comments in the thread and man, some people are just assholes no matter what and can never see the good in what people are trying to do.
I'm glad he did it. I hope he continues doing this, along with his team. And while I don't wish anyone a PITA buyer on any seller, I hope they all experience one sometime soon. So they can learn to deal with them.

Great!
It's like that Undercover Boss show. The only way to truly understand is to actually do it on a day-to-day basis.

He's been doing this for 10 months- did he come in with Weinig? If so, I'm beginning to be impressed with the new bunch. Maybe. Took years to build my skepticism and will take awhile before I begin to trust the suits here. But interesting article- kudos for the folks walkin' the walk.

I've always thought new eBay employees should serve a 6 mth. training/apprentice period where they're paid minimum wage and given the time during their work day to list and sell whatever they want in order to learn the ropes/ins and outs of selling.

I was thinking about this earlier while pulling sold items (and frantically looking for a misplaced shirt, which I found thank heavens!) I'm rather surprised that none of the brass has done this before in the 15 or whatever years eBay has been around. I'm sure there's been some that sold misc stuff but to actually be learning lessons from their selling and applying it to rules & regs... just sorta surprised it hasn't been done and mentioned before.

Employees used to HAVE to buy/sell on the site, even as late as Meg. Well, maybe not HAVE to but it was VERY strongly encouraged when I first started sellling here and it was a badge of honor for employees.
Donohoe is apparently the one who nullified that requirement. No surprise there.
I like Wenig. He has to walk a fine line between bringing the site back to it's roots (and hopefully therefore profitable to sellers again) and the idiots on Wall Street. I haven't researched who is on the BOD, but I hope to gawd they're real business people who understand a balance sheet and not clueless yahoos like Wall Street brokers are.

IIRC JD sold exactly one thing on ebay - his dining room table before he moved to CA. He listed it, cash, pickup only and sold it. The end. See, selling is easy.

Boy, there are some really negative jaded members posting on that topic. Maybe they should find somewhere else to sell, if they're that negative about every damn thing eBay does.

Yeah. Maybe they'll roast me a bit now and let you chill. There are some seriously negative sellers posting over there. If they were my employees, I'd being looking at firing them about now.

The posters saying Lawton isn't a big enough seller to have had a true seller experience (paraphrased, obviously) are full of it. Being a big seller doesn't guarantee you understand eBay or eBay policies.
Hell, look at this group. We're mostly small sellers in the overall scheme of eBay, yet most of us are far more versed in eBay strategy and policies than the REALLY big sellers I see posting elsewhere (eBay forums, eBay Linked In Group, etc). Size doesn't guarantee knowledge or profit.

Most 'big' sellers are too removed from ebay to give a fig about ebay's policies. They're on autopilot. It's the little schleps who have to keep learning new tapdances to avoid the new round of pitfalls.

You'd be surprised at the number of big sellers in the eBay LinkedIn Group who would come post about a buyer problem, or getting downgraded from TRS, who were totally clueless about what to do. Especially the big ones who got downgraded and whined, saying well darn my FB is 100% why am I not TRS anymore? Dummies.

I bet the only reason he doesn't have TRS+ on his listings is due to handling time. You have to offer same day or 1 day handling. He meets the other requirements, so he must have 2 or 3 day handling.

::shrug::
ebay employees sure like their KWS. it seems to be a theme with them. if its isn't LIKE NEW, its perfect to wear with capris and sandals. I guess isn't either no longer a violaton or different rules apply when you work for the company.
but I do agree that it should be a requirement to have a selling background to work in corporate.

They remind me of the same old hacks who are always posting on Ina's site, and they say the same.old.thing.every.single.time. The poster who keeps pushing the 'ebafia' thing, the one who CAPS every OTHER word, the one with the stupid sig, and of course the "Johnny Ho" guy. Why are they even posting there? If it's so bad why don't they move on? I don't think a lot of them even sell there anymore, why are they so obsessed with it? Pretty much all I read there is Marie's posts.

Dunno if this belongs here or where but we have dates back on feedback. No more more than 6 months ago kinda crap. GAWD, I hated that and I hope it's more changes as a result of some ebay employees selling on ebay.

I cannot stand to listen to tons of bitching and whining all the time. I.JUST.CANT. That's why I love this board. There are just the right amount of "griefs" without going all out. It will always be my suggestion that if it's just that bad....find another opportunity, and quit eBay

No announcement; it's just there. There wasn't any announcement about it when they took it away, was there? I don't remember any; I just remember adding that sig to my ebay board ID.

Yeah, it's great that he is doing this, and that they challenged the team to do it, but he still has a lot to learn. He is selling his "Chicco Lightweight Umbrella Stroller Model 10878" for $21.50. Shipping to me shows $55.78, and his return policy says "Free Return Shipping". I see a free stroller in someone's future. Two of his other listings showed "Free Return Shipping" also but those are the only ones I looked at.
