When I was training horses, I had one entered in a race at Penn National racetrack up near Harrisburg, PA. When we got up there they had one barn closed off. That weekend the Budweiser Clydesdales were performing in a parade and at the racetrack, so they were being housed there. The tractor trailer they were transported in was beautiful. Two of us sneaked into the barn. Oh man, were those horses gorgeous. Most grooms of race horses take care of 4. The Budweiser grooms that traveled with the horses only took care of 2 each. They had their own little step stools all decorated too. We went into a few of the stalls. The horses were HUGE. I tried to get my arms around one of their necks and couldn't reach all the way around. They were gentle and sweet and I have never forgotten those few stolen minutes. We got thrown out of the barn, of course, when they discovered we were in there, but well worth it!

They almost died out in Australia, but there are a few protection societies now. It's funny that little Shetland ponies are supposed to be so mean but the big Clydesdales are so gentle. I know gentleness must have been bred into them, but why not breed it into Shetlands too?

Yesterday, I was sitting in the car with the door open, waiting for DH with Stanley our 9 lb Chihuahua. Some guy walked by smiling at Stan & started walking over to us. Stan went ballistic! Almost took his hand off. He's a bit protective. OK, a LOT over protective.
