Growing up in Texas, you can't escape Country music. I grew up with a huge variety of music, including lots of 70s/80s country. I get nostalgic for the music of my youth-- so many memories of listening to George Jones and Dolly Parton with my parents. This list is really good-- and probably up for argument as to whether or not these are truly saddest C&W songs ever-- but I have enjoyed listening to them today. noisey.vice.com/blog/ten-saddest-country-love-songs

I think Gary Allan's CD "Tough All Over" is one of the saddest collections ever. Always made me want to put a gun to my head. I found out years later that he'd written and recorded it after his wife committed suicide. Suddenly, the songs made sense.

Lee Brice "I drive your truck" and Luke Bryan "Drink a beer" always bring tears to my eyes. IIRC, Luke Bryan's song is very personal to him after losing his siblings.

OOOO I forgot about those two! Lee Brice said in an interview that when he heard that song, he knew he HAD to record it because it reminded him of his grandfather.

I don't listen to country music as a rule, but you can't avoid this one if you listen to all Christmas music stations from Thanksgiving through New Year.

I was born in California and listened to the Bakersfield sound as my family moved throughout the California Central Valley and other parts of CA. "The Bakersfield sound was a genre of country music developed in the mid- to late 1950s in and around Bakersfield, California. Bakersfield country was a reaction against the slickly produced, string orchestra-laden Nashville sound, which was becoming popular in the late 1950s." My father listened to country every day and I was right there with him. During the day I would play my dad's records and my mom would yell from another room, "Turn that off, those words are disgusting"! The words, "my son calls another man dad and 2nd song, somebody's got to loose, no matter what the game the rules are still the same, somebody's got to loose". In the 6th grade I moved to Texas (Pecos, Sanderson, Ft. Stockton, Del Rio and Houston) and discovered the Texas sound. Love me a sad country song and the tears run down my cheeks!
This is my saddest country love song:

I grew up listening to Patay Klein, Loretta Lynn, George Jones, Dolly Parton, etc. The saddest of all time is "don't worry 'bout me". It is the first song we used in my moms memorial slideshow. www.facebook.com/video.php?v=559065147522973Not sure if this link will work. I cry every time I listen to this.

For the good times. Ray Price written by Kris Krisstopherson, one of the best lyric writers IMO.

I grew up listening to country too. I'm always a sucker for the twang of an older country song. But sad? That would be Johnny Cash and "Hurt" (I hurt myself today just to see if I still feel) !!!!
OR if it's country: Glen Campbell "I'm not gonna miss you" is a heartbreaker

Oh, I know, Dolly Parton singing "I Will Always Love You'. Kind of haunting. She added layers that no one else has managed. Shouldn't mess with the best.
