I came home today to hear the unmistakeable loud, yet low-pitched growl of a horrible cat fight waiting to happen. I have just one cat, so assumed that a stray who had been hanging around somehow got let in and there was about to be a really nasty cat fight upstairs.
I crept of the stairs hearing the moaning get louder and found my cat hunched low and very vocal, tail fat like a raccoon's.....the room was dark except for the light that leaked in from the hallway....he was about to pounce. I stopped him because he certainly would have hurt himself lunging at the mirror! It took a while for him to regain his composure.
I think my poor cat is senile and partially deaf. He howls often and late at night for no reason at all. Its like the call of the wild because when he is howling he will not let anyone near him, its like he turns feral at those times. Now, in his senior years he has suddenly discovered the mirror which now has 3 priority boxes at the bottom. It is funny, but I do feel bad for him at the same time.

Awww poor guy! Maybe you can cover it when you go out so he doesn't get hurt.
Although I often react the same way when I look in the mirror!

Good thing the only mirror in my house is the one over the bathroom sink!

Yeah, temporarily I had to put some priority boxes across the bottom so he doesn't get into a fight while I'm at work tomorrow LOL

My heart goes out to you and your cat. I don't find senile behaviour funny in humans and I especially don't find it funny in animals. He's going to need even more of your love from now on, to ease his distress and keep him physically safe.
Maybe when he gets into fight mode quickly removing or covering the enemy object might calm him down sooner? Accompanied by soothing words? I know he's your darling, but I wouldn't be trying to touch ANY cat in that state. Not with fat tail and arched back.
(((clean and her dear cat)))
