That's lovely. It shows pit bulls can be nice when they're treated properly. I didn't know cats got glaucoma.

Love this story. Hope they find loving furever homes or just stay with their foster mom.

Great story.
Hope you don't mind me sharing this: I use to really hate pit bulls. Then my DH was mauled (his arm) by an unprovoked attack by one. It was horrible as he had to beat the dog off of him. Thankfully it wasn't a child or that child would have died. He's a strong man and nothing has ever brought him to his knees like that dog. Now I dislike them even more.
So - my oldest daughter's boyfriend has a pit bull. I'm skittish and make them crate her while we're visiting at the same time at her place. Over Thanksgiving I'm not doing well due to a mix up on after chemo medication. The first thing the dog does when I walk in is run up give me a quick lick on the face and take off. I was like, what the heck was that about?
Then, I'm cozy on the couch because I'm having a hard time and spent a few nights there. The dog would sneak onto the couch next to me and not leave my side. She would stay curled up close. Slowly I started petting her. She'd get closer. They couldn't believe how she was acting with me because she's not a cuddler. She changed my mind concerning pit bulls. Kind of won me over. I'm still skittish with the dogs, but I realize they can be raised to not be monsters.

I am sorry to hear about your husband's attack & yes, for your illness also. We all have things in our lives that test our strength.
Thank you for sharing the pit bull story. Animals are amazing & I think they know way more than we humans and they show it with their love. After my husband had his heart attacks & strokes, our little chihuahua doesn't leave his side & has the amazing ability to calm him down like a therapy dog although he was never trained to do that. He climbs up & puts his little paws on Joe's chest and his head under his neck right over where they installed the defibrillator/pacemaker & sits like that for a few minutes each day. I call it his "heart check." He then looks at me, gives me a wink, like all is OK in there. Melts us both. He makes us laugh every day too & we all know laughter is the BEST medicine!
Feel better! C

I think they have a sense of what's going. I can remember thinking, why do you have to hang next to me. Go see your dad. She just kept her eye on me. ha
Your little chihuahua sounds sweet!

I was never fond of pitt bulls either until my neighbor got a puppy. Someone could break in and the dog would lick them to death. I think pitts are like rotties - the owner is more to blame for a mean dog than the dog breed. It's all in the socialization.

Dantes, I remember that story about your husband, how he had to beat the dog off. That part still horrifies me, because fighting back would make the dog worse, but what else could DH do? Where in hell was the owner?
Pit bulls are illegal in Australia (my state anyway) and suspect dogs get DNA tested and put down if they're found to be mostly pit bull. I don't think I agree with it, because most of the vicious maulings were on little kids, and the parents and the dog owner should have been more alert.
I think I read somewhere that it's been proven that dogs can smell illness. I remember one story about a woman who'd had cancer whose dog suddenly started butting against her right knee, whimpering, licking etc. She just thought it was a new behaviour and laughed it off, but it was later discovered that she had cancer in that leg, where she hadn't before. And I think some people with diabetes have been warned of wonky blood sugar by their dogs.
So the dog probably smelled something about you that wasn't "right", Dantes, and wanted to comfort you and even protect you.

It is horrifying. After he beat the dog off his arm, the dog came back for more. The owner was right there and had no control. I drove by the area a few days later and the next house had kids play stuff in the yard. This dog was only at this house for about a week. As much as I hate what happened, I'm glad it was my DH's arm and not a kids throat.
I've read about dogs smelling illness. One dog was sniffing tumors, which I think should be explored.
Another strange thing - the ex girlfriend of that dog owner, was attacked by her two pit bulls less than a week later. She was in the hospital for over a week. The dogs were siblings. It makes me wonder if they conditioned the dogs. I hate that. The dogs never stood a chance under their care. I think the people conditioning these dogs and fighting them have done more damage to the breed than anything else.

I LOVE dogs (& cats) & love the story!
While I've known a couple of very sweet pits, it's one of the breeds I'm very cautious around also. What happened to your husband Dantes is horrible!
It seems like so many (certainly not all) pit owners are totally clueless dog owners who just want a tough & cool dog. It's not just the conditioning though, it's also the totally irresponsible breeding/inbreeding which makes them prone to being unstable or having Sudden Aggression Syndrome. I think at least 50% of the dogs in our local shelters are pits/pit mixes.
I used to have an elderly cat who was indoors his entire life, until his last year or so (at age 17) when he decided he was going to go out on our front porch & lay occasionally. He never went anywhere else & with a busy household it was hard to keep him in once he got the notion in his head.
One day a neighbors pit bull got out of their backyard & it ran up on our porch & grabbed him. My neighbor came running down, but had zero control over the dog - I don't think it had any training at all. It was awful to watch...

I agree many times it's due to how Pits are raised a lot of times it isn't. Many pit loves will always blame it on the owners or the person must have done something to set the dog off but it's simply not always the case. There is something with the breed that causes them to "snap" more than other breeds. Any dog will bite under the right circumstances and every dog owner needs to understand that no matter what breed they have. Unfortunately some pits seem have a hidden trigger and you just don't know what is going to set it off. It doesn't mean they were raised wrong or abused, it doesn't mean the person deserved to be bit or did anything wrong, they are just more likely to flip out. I'm not saying they should all be killed or banned but owners should accept that fact and use more caution, to me that makes them a responsible owner. Denying it is irresponsible and lead to more attacks and deaths and will eventually lead to their ban in more and more areas.
We had people working next door, they brought their pit everyday, he was a great, well behaved dog. One day the lady that worked on the crew got in the truck with him to fill out a form and suddenly he leapt across the seat and grabbed her by the face. Thankfully a couple of the guys were just outside the truck and were able to get him off her just as he released her face and started to latch onto her throat. She wound up with major lacerations and punctures on her face and minor lacerations on her throat where thankfully they pulled him back just as he started to latch on. Seconds later and he would have killed have killed her. She knew him since he was a puppy and the dog just minutes before was tail wagging and happy as could be. She did nothing wrong and neither did the owner, the dog just flipped out, it happens and not just in pitty breed but it seems to be more common in them than others.

For the record I've had my own pit mix so I am definitely not anti pit. But it is absolutely not a breed I would have near a child because it's too unpredictable. Too many good ones have turned bad for me to feel safe with them around my children. Others may feel differently and I'm ok with that but it's not a risk I'm willing to take with my children or grandchildren.

I too, am very wary around pit bulls for the reason Peek pointed out...that they're too unpredictable. I knew of a gal who had her lower jaw almost completely ripped off by her best friend's pit, who the friend considered her 'baby.' Several towns in my state have outlawed the breed due to vicious attacks and children being killed. Then, furthering my mistrust...I was reduced to tears after reading this story 2-weeks ago. www.newser.com/story/218547/boy-left-home-alone-killed-by-sisters-pit-bulls.html

I knows some people are passionate about their pit bulls but I'm not completely comfortable around them, could never own or be owned by one.

OK, wait a minute. What the heck happened? I started this with an awesomely cute pic and heartwarming story & it has turned dark & ugly in here. I feel awful that all these bad stories and memories are being dredged up. I would post a pic of cute furry kittens, but am now afraid of where that would lead.
I'm going back to watch NC (go Fig Newton!) beat the Cardinals. And....... yea Denver!

I love that hat! There's nothing like a cat just wearing a hat and not trying to get it off. Like it thinks, yeah I look cool.

LOL Yes, she is.
The coveted blue bed has been exchanged for the brown cat bed in recent pics.
The blue bed is now out in Sophie's house by the backdoor.

I'm sorry. I started it with the story of my husband. I meant to have a good ending with a sweet pit bull licking my face and trying to cuddle me.
Your story of the pit with kittens is sweet and she deserves to not be thought of as a monster because of her breed and misconceptions.
