So, so sad. Our family lost our beloved Marilyn, a half St Bernard, half Australian Shephard. She was a really, really good dog. A fantastic watchdog, great for cuddling, low energy, even sweet when we brought home our unexpected kitten four years ago. She had the biggest brown eyes that told you everything she was feeling. She thought the sun, moon, and stars set on my dh.....she absolutely adored that man and was always just a few steps behind him whenever he was home or out working in the backyard.
She was in our lives from the time she was a little furball that we could hold in our arms and remained with us for over 13 years.....which our vet says is a pretty long life for such a big dog. Now I firmly believe she is somewhere with a super big yard, running and barking like she hasn't been able to seem to do for the past few weeks and enjoying life in a fur body that doesn't hurt anymore.
Kitty has howled all day and positioned himself to where he can keep watch for her through the back door windows....thinking eventually she will come back inside to play with him. That is so pitiful to watch.
Just wanted to share, and hopefully just receive some comfort and words of understanding from others who have lost a precious fur baby. I would post some photos of her but I just can't bring myself to pull any of them up and look at her as she was. Needless to say, she was a real beauty!

((((((frock))))))) I'm sorry. It hurts to lose a furbaby. Give the kitty extra hugs and be sure to tell him what's going on. I truly believe animals understand us.

So sorry! Losing a pet is losing a family member that gave unconditional love regardless of our many human faults!
You gave her 13 years of a great life! ((Hugs))

So sorry for your loss. It does take a big piece out of our heart when we lose one of our pets. I cried for two days when the kids hamster died. You just can't help it! (((Hugs)))

Oh, I'm so sorry, it's always hard to lose such a loving, sweet companion. Your DH will really feel the loss of his furry shadow. You gave her 13 great years and she repaid you in full. I too think she's running and barking happily in a big green field somewhere.

Hugs and condolences Frock. I hope Marilyn is free of pain and chasing squirrels. It is so funny that you would mention squirrels.....we have a huge pecan tree in the front yard and a huge walnut tree in the back yard.....hence a yard full of squirrels. But Marilyn and her low key personality would just sit on the back porch and watch them scamper all over the place giving no indication that she ever thought about interfering. And she would allow our little kitty, from the day he arrived, to crawl all over her, nipping at her ears and tail and then being subjected to a full kitty tongue bath. But heaven help anyone trying to walk into our house or yard without being escorted by a family member.....until one of us did the introductions you would be considered a dangerous criminal she needed to protect us from. Once intros were made you were immediately accepted as family and licked accordingly. But from outside our front door she always sounded like she would rip your throat out if you even tried to come in. The hard part was just an hour ago when I finally got the call back from our college age daughter who is doing a community service project over in Japan during the winter break. She had me on facetime and I had to tell her and see her sweet little face well up with tears. She grew up with Marilyn, got her when she was just 8 years old. It is the small things that got to me today. We live in an old neighborhood where our mailboxes are attached to our houses right outside our front doors so the mail carriers walk their routes. I always know when they are coming and on my porch because the barking and pacing at the front of the house begins. Today it was so quiet I could hear the mail carrier carrying on a cell phone conversation as he approached our porch with the mail. And tonight kitty went for his evening snack which consists of dog food that would have fallen out of Marilyn's food bowl. And there was no food bowl. He was looking around like "what the what?!" I guess I'll have to put a small bowl back over there. Naturally he won't eat dry cat food out of it but I can still give him a few bites of the dog food he seems to like so much. He has thrown up every single dry cat food we have ever presented him with but would eat ANY dog food left over from the dog's dinner.....go figure. Thank you so much for the kind words and for a safe place to come and share my memories and our painful loss.

I'm so sorry you lost her, sounds like she was a wonderful family member. Thirteen years is a long time for a big dog. She must have been very loved.

I got tears in my eyes reading about the postman. Marilyn sounds like my kind of dog! She's taken a little piece of your heart with her, and although that hurts it means she's still got your love wherever she is now. She's just waiting to see you all again one day. (((Frock)))

Hugs to you and your family. Marilyn sounds like a great dog and had a nice life as a member of your family. When you're ready, I know we'd love to see her picture (but no pressure, totally get not wanting to go through them right now).

I rarely check in on the Critter boards, so my apologies and belated condolences for your loss, ((((frock)))). My eyes were welling up reading about your beloved Marilyn. I've lost more than my share of fur babies...it's never easy saying goodbye.
