When I picked it up in the store, I didn't know what all the extra material was but I liked the feel of the material and the pattern and the sleeves so I went for it. Once I put it on the dress form, it seemed to make sense to tie it into an ascot type thing at the neck, but I just want to make sure others think that's what it is intended for. At the back of the neck, the material is very wide and has to be scrunched up to do the tie in the front. The brand is Ungaro Ter which I think is Emanuel Ungaro but I still have to confirm that. I may put it in my pile to list on Etsy as the listed items all have good prices on ebay, but the solds are pretty low prices. Sorry the pics are so huge. I started another thread to ask how to make them smaller. ETA, and now they are smaller! That is so much easier than the "explanation" I got on the other board when I asked. I was almost afraid to ask here cause I was made to feel "stoopid" by you know who.

Unfortunately I'm no help with the description, but here is a link for a great user-friendly pic re-sizer that I've used many times. Re-size Pics

That looks right to me, and I'm pretty sure it's called a jabot when the fabric is attached to the shirt - an ascot is a separate item, like a scarf.
You can actually resize photos when you post them here. Just click on the image and a little square will appear on each corner. Click on one of the squares to enlarge or shrink the image.
ETA: Sniped by sunset!

That's a jabot to me. I think you can tie it many different ways if you're talented in that :-).

I think jabot too. Did you resize already? I like the size you have here now, I can see the detail.

I sold a older Escada top (For 100.00!!!!) with that type of "thing". Mine had a button at the back of the neck so you could remove it if you wanted. You could definitely tie or drape it different ways and I showed 2. I've always wondered about that top. It went to someone in Beverly Hills and I hoped to see it on Mad Men! HAHA

Hummm, I have jobots on my drapes-never thought that clothing would have it. I would have called it an attached ascot.
Learning here...

I remember seeing blouses like that in the 80s - not sure of the era, maybe 90s - loosely tied, and with an interesting pin centered to hold it in place

My mom loves those kinds of blouses (the skin on her neck is not her favorite feature, skintags).
The print is lovely.

(Yes, the pics have been resized here--very easy once you click on it and use the little box in the corner).
One more question about the blouse sleeves. They have the appearance of leg of mutton (full at the top, very narrow at the bottom) but they have buttons and material that folds over to be buttoned. The thing I find odd is that the material folds to the inside of the sleeve, toward the body. I would have thought it would fold to the outside with the buttons to the outside of the sleeve/arm. Instead the buttons are to the inside of the sleeve, so if you bend your elbow and raise your arm to your face, the buttons would be directly in front of you on your arm, not to the outside below the elbow. Does that make sense the way I have described it, and does it make sense that that is the way they are set? (I purchased an item when I was in my teens, and the sleeves were reversed so I know it's possible for that to happen.)

I can see what you describe about the sleeves in the first picture - could the top possibly be meant to button up the back? Are there any darts on the front or back?

Dumb of me not to think of that!!! No darts, but it does put the tags at the back as they are very near the button. The "jabot" is now at the back though, and not long enough to come back around to the front. I will put it that way on the dress form tomorrow and see what happens.

Maybe it originally came with a pin or hardware to hold the scarf part in place

If the inside label is on the button side, I'd say that's definitely the back.
Can't imagine the tie in the back, though. Now you've got me curious to see it the other way on the dress form.

Here's some new pics and views. Sorry the quality is not so good--I took them this evening with just a flash cause otherwise I would have had to wait until Tuesday to post. With the buttons at the back, the ends of the tie are not at the back. First and second pics are front and back of it just knooted in the back. Third pic is with the ends of the tie wrapped to the front and tied. It's not really long enough to tie into a square knot in the front.

I like how the tie looks in that last photo, but I don't think it's supposed to button in the back. The buttons go all the way down, which would be really difficult to fasten by yourself if they were in the back. And they're more decorative than I would expect back buttons to be.

Yeah. Now I'm baffled.
I'd tend to agree with you Ahrn, but have you ever run across something that had the interior label in the front? The only time I have is when there was a reason for it because of lace or something where the label would be seen through the garment.
I vaguely recall having a blouse or two that I wore to work as an admin (secretary then) in the late 70's/early 80's that buttoned completely down the back. I think I felt like a contortionist trying to put it on.

Now that you mention it, I too had a blouse that buttoned in the back and had to contortion myself to get it on. I just searched on "vintage blouse back buttons" and got quite a few hits. Some also say "high collar", which I now also remember about the one I had. I just tried wrapping the tie around and tucking the ends under, and I think it looks OK. It would help if my dress form actually had a neck though. I will show it that way and with it tied (with new pics taken with natural light like the first ones I had posted which are way more flattering) and will disclose that I am not certain of the neck treatment. Thanks for all your input!

somany, have you tried putting it on your own body?
I've had a couple of things that stumped me and, even thought they might not have fit me, I was able to figure out the right way to wear it.

Are there any bust darts (or other kind of shaping) on the non-buttoning side? That could be a clue. It does look nice in your latest photo.

somany, have you tried putting it on your own body? I've had a couple of things that stumped me and, even thought they might not have fit me, I was able to figure out the right way to wear it. Well, it's a size 6, and I'm not LOL, but I just tried it, and it brings up another possibility. If you look at the 2nd and 3rd pics in my first post and then imagine what it would look like turned around so the ties hang down the back and the material is front is 6-8 inches long, it actually looks pretty good. My dress form obviously does not have arms, and the material did not lay very well when I took the 2nd and 3rd pics, but on me, it laid fairly well. I don't remember that as a style though whereas I do remember the high neckline. My sister is probably going to stop by tomorrow night so I may try it on again and have her help with trying to figure it out. There are no darts, but there is a pleat/seam/don't know what to call it, at the top of the shoulders, but I don't think it helps any with the neckline. Just adds more confusion to an already very confusing item. I have to say I can understand why it's in such good condition. With the sleeves having to be buttoned and unbuttoned to get it on and off and having to contort yourself to get the back buttoned, the poor person who owned it probably didn't wear it much!

Okay, now that I relooked at the first few pics you put in your opening post, I feel 99% sure that the buttons are supposed to be in the back. Even though you mentioned it earlier, I didn't pay attention to the buttons on the sleeves before this. There's no way they would be facing the front instead of the back.
I'm REALLY perplexed about the whole neck tie/scarf thing, though.

I searched google images for Ungaro Ter and came across this one listed on Ebay.ca. It doesn't have the tie thingy, but it does button down the back. Ungaro Ter BLouse
