Bees are pretty cool to have. Besides the pollination, the honey is a great bonus. My husband usually handles the bees because they just don't like me much. When we had them, he could go into the hives without gloves or hat and not get stung. I walk by and they decide to go after me. I usually suit up and take a lot of pictures of him working because they are so fascinating. Since I'm sitting through a possible blizzard right now, I'll post some past spring pics of the bees .

Welcome Sandra
Yes, this is a new area. I got Spring Fever and had Val set up this area so we can have a place to discuss our gardens, exchange ideas and just enjoy ourselves.
I'm looking forward to reading all the posts and hope to see lots and lots of pics too.

I just noticed this yard & garden topic; is it new?
Yup. It's Shirley's fault. She beat me and Clean into submission.

I really need this thread so I can bitch and moan about what isn't growing for me this summer. It is usually the squash.

Okay, last post for awhile, I promise. Since I have had a veggie garden for 40 years, I finally figured out how to keep out rabbits.....I used to used tons of fences to no avail.
Figure out to use weed cover. I have 6' metal stakes, 6' black mesh deer fencing. At the bottom, I run about a 36" high fences of cheap weed cover. Attached to the ground with garden staples, and attached at the top to the deer fence with floral wire. Looks like crap, but for some reason, bunnies seldom figure out how to break through. I check it daily, and when I do see a rip, I close it up with floral wire.
No charge for this helpful hint.....

Post as much as you want Denise, that's what it's here for.
And thanks for the bunny tip. I don't have bunny issues, but I'm sure others do.

No rabbits here but the outside cats love to get in loose soil and mulch.
I have always been a failure at crop growing so I stick to hardy flowers.

Love the bee photos! Thanks for sharing, really cool.
Bad bunnies: We have them. They're so stinking cute running around, so I have a love hate relationship with them. A few people around here shoot coyotes. It's stupid. When the coyote population goes down, the bunny population goes up and people complain about them.
There are scent based sprays that temporarily work to keep them away - for some people. I've thought about making mini flags out of wool and scenting those to mark the areas. I have a really good ( I think ) idea to create them. I wonder how they would go over.

We grow a vegetable garden every year. Or try to. Weather plays a huge role. Tomatos, peppers, squash, beans, and corn do well. We have a lot of clay in our ground so nothing much else grows.
We do have a pretty large asparagus patch. I have a hard time finding them, lol.
No flowers here. Chickens dig everything up. We have a fence around the veggie garden. It's good for weeds but they don't discriminate where they scratch.

I get such great pleasure out of going up to my garden and picking dinner. Whatever veggies are ready are candidates. And it is ORGANIC!

I love gardening. But I like no fuss plants. I want to plunk it in the ground and MUST be willing to survive and thrive on it's own. We have 7 wooded acres. I planted 800 daffodil bulbs both last year and the year before. Since they multiply each year I am super excited that they are beginning to come up. Last year I planted one area with hydrangeas and hostas and another with day lilies. I hope they will do will this year.
Now that you have turned me on to Plow and Hearth I think I may be a poor woman. I love their spinners.

I'm jealous of all the bulbs. I used to have a lot when I lived in Cali but here in the desert they just don't do well.
P&H is the bomb, their stuff is such great quality.
I don't know if you saw the post yet about QVCs gardening day on Tuesday.
They have an hour of just P&H stuff scheduled at 2am Eastern time.
It's well worth watching if you like P&H as they get a real deal from them and have the lowest P&H prices out there.

I will have to watch QVC for the Plow and Heart. I checked out their website and was truly tempted.
Love the bee pictures. The man who installed our fence also had quite a bee business. I offered part of our land for him to keep his bees on but unfortunately there was not enough sun.

It just seriously is not going to happen for me. My grandfather was a great gardener, but I did not inherit that gene (neither did anyone else in my family evidently.) I do plant flowers occasionally & used to do quite well with houseplants until we moved to the South for some reason. I do LOVE the farmer's market though.

I also didn't know we had a gardening board. Luv it! I like Shirley am getting old so I don't do veggies at all. And like Denise live in PA so flowers are around mother's day for me. I have a three tier deck with lots of flower boxes. Also the the decks I do big pots. The one deck is covered with a pergola and wisteria so total shade. I do ferns, hosta and cladium there.
I have a lot of different little gardens. We have a koi pond so we plant around that. I just love being outside. Lungs are bad but I huff and puff and take my time.
Thanks for starting this and I can't wait to hear about all of your plantngs.
Val did an adorable job on her patio redo last year.

I'm glad you're liking it Roy. I hope we get all kinds of great tips here and I can't wait to see all the pics too. What I really like is we will get to see what gardens are like in different parts of the country. I can't wait, I want Spring to be here tomorrow!

Bulbs do pretty well up here, Shirley. Probably because we get colder in the winter than you do. A tip for those in warmer weather wanting bulb flowers - put the bulbs in the refrigerator over the winter, plant in late Jan/early Feb. That's what we used to do in Dallas. Here, the iris are gorgeous. Unfortunately not enough people bother with bulbs. Shame, too, because it could be gorgeous here in the spring. Iris, daffodils, and tulips do well here. *sigh* From the local botanical garden:

I've seen some great ones down here too. But my soil sucks and I would have to have beds totally dug out and refilled with good dirt, so no bulbs for me. I miss the jonquils the most, it's the March flower and I used to have loads of them.

Ooooooooo WalMart grocery store had some small pots of primroses! And they can handle a light freeze! I need to buy a larger pot or two tomorrow and swing by and get some of the primroses. Wheee, flowers early!

We won't get any flowering plants until probably mid-March or later (last year it was the end of March). We might get some pansies in a few weeks, but the other stuff comes in right before Easter. The big places don't want to write off the stock if we get a freeze, which I get, but dang it makes for a bleak spring! It almost -ALMOST - makes me want to move back to Dallas. Just so I can have flowers almost all year again. But hey, a pot or two of primroses and I'm good until the rest of the stuff comes out! I gotta have my color!

Whoever lived here before us really knew what they were doing with the bulbs around here. Out front we have several mulch beds with shrubs and flowers and along the front of the house. Starting with the early crocus and right through to late summer/early fall there are groups of flowers that open and bloom one after the other creating continuous blooms of flowers all summer.
The only flowers I do are the annuals in the planters out back. I got so lazy about it a few years ago that I planted hostas in several of the big pots. That way they can die off in the fall/winter and they grow back in the Spring. I was spending way too much time on all the pots/planters out there.

I'm jealous of all of you. I have lousy lighting on my patio, I can't plant anything outside the walls because the dirt is only about 4" deep before you hit the concrete slab. I really need to move. But I've slowly been figuring out what flowers work where, so I think this summer I should have a really nice patio using container plants (if nothing else). I had to think outside the box and use different flowers than I was used to. I had an absolutely gorgeous, HUGE container of violets last year.

Shirley - do tell What is a garden spinner?
I have trouble thinking garden as we have 6 inches of snow. I am though thinking of how I will set up my gnome garden to coordinate with the fairies.
I have a nice big ladder in one section with plants all around and bird houses and such on the rungs. In an old leaky birdbath I plant spider plants in the center and creeping jenny around it - turned out so nice.
