My oldest cockatiel, Mickey aka Mickey woo woo and Papa is dying, he is 29 almost 30 so it is old age and nothing I can do but make him comfortable. I know it is his time. I have the heater keeping him warm and took the young busy bird out of his cage and I keep going over and talking to him. I keep telling him to go find Nicki that was his mate and she died a few years ago.
I know it is his time but it doesn't make it any less sad. Please pray for a quick and pain free passing for him. I keep telling him it is ok, find Nicki and he has been such a good birdie.
I know you animal lovers understand. I am sitting here crying for him.

I'm so sorry for you and your birdie. You've given each other a lot of love over the years and it's heartbreaking to have to let that go. Birds are such wonderful companions. I hope he goes quickly and without pain to find Nicki.

I may have prematurely sounded the alarm. I was sure he was going pass this morning but he has surprised me and bounced back a little he is up on a perch at about mid cage and eating he is sleeping in between bites.. This morning he was sitting in corner of cage about 1/2 conscious. I know this is only temporary but I am glad to see him not looking so miserable.
Thanks for all the good thoughts and prayers, he has had a great life and maybe today isn't his day after all.

Pardon the pun, but I think you ruffled his feathers and now he's annoyed. He just was having a bad morning, and here you are, his trusted human, assuming the worst. He's probably saying neener-neener right now in bird chat, you just don't know it. Kidding aside, I'm glad he's better.

As of this morning he is sitting on perch at top of cage and cleaning, he ate, drank and pooped last night which means all systems are still working and he is cleaning this morning. He looks a lot better this morning but I am not getting my hopes up too high because I have no idea what yesterday morning was all about. Talked to vet and she said it would be much too stressful to bring him in since he has never been in travel cage or to the vet and at his advanced age it just wasn't good idea, he has never had any need to go. I have one bird who is frequent flyer at the vet he gets eye infections.
Thank you for the prayers and sorry for the false alarm but I appreciate all the hugs and prayers, I am sure I am going to need them just not as soon as I thought.

Here is a picture of the birdie you have been praying for, it was taken about a week ago, he is between 29 and 30 years old, the sweet boy.

I love birds, but maybe parrots most of all. I can't say for sure because I had a pet magpie when I was eight and I still miss him (he flew away to mate).
Mickey is a pretty boy. Is he allowed out of the cage?

My mother in law initially had Mickey and his mate Nicki as babies until she became a snow bird and left town for 8 months a year. I took him and Nicki in at the beginning just when she was gone and gave them back when she came back to town. Eventually I bonded with the birds so I just kept them all the time and she came over to visit them when she was home. I have had him about 18 years or more.
I have his son, Petey too who is 26 years old this year, have had son since he was a baby. They are all allowed out of cage I have 6 birds total only one Baby Stinky really chooses to come out and be out all the time, Petey will occasionally grace us with his presence, lol.
Phil and Lil (Baby Stinky's parents) who are in another cage will sit in the door way of cage and watch the world from there. I don't believe in breeding but Lil was a out of control egg layer and vet suggested letting her have one baby to see if it would stop her from laying so much, it has definitely slowed her down. Phil and Lil were rescues and the last birdie is Sweetie Pie who is a rescue also.
Excuse the cover, they chew windows in the cover so they can see out when they are supposed to be sleeping, lol.

Can I ask you an odd question? I've always wondered about birds that are allowed outside of their cages -- don't they poop outside the cage as well? Can you train them to only go inside the cage?

I have the heater keeping him warm and took the young busy bird out of his cage and I keep going over and talking to him.
Was he sharing the cage with the other bird? Could it be he just wants his own space for now?

Val...He has always shared a cage with at least 3 other birds (the singles cage, I have a bonded pair in a separate cage because they cannot live with the singles. I have 2 extra large cages 36 x 36 x 42 approximately. Sharing has never been a problem but I appreciate the ideas, right now the young busy one (Stinky) is sitting right next to Mickey keeping him company, sitting really still which I am sure is very hard for him but he has always buddied around with Mickey, acts like Mickey is his father. Other than old age my other thought is he may have had a night fright and fell and hit his head and he was stunned like when a birds hits your window. I have nothing but speculation to base what happened to him on. I do I have an extra cage which is for whoever needs to be isolated, sickness or behavior can put one in it.
Arn...Yes they poop where ever they might be every about 20 minutes but it doesn't stink or stain anything so I just carry a napkin in pocket and wipe it up, its little about 1/3 inch x 1/3 inch give or take. Generally if they are sitting with you it can be anticipated by body language and directed to napkin or where ever you want it to go. I had one birdie that would only go on my white keds tennis shoes that sat on the steps, so I left an old pair there and washed them every couple of days, he would fly over to shoes every so often. So they might be trainable but I cannot take credit for it, he decided it himself.
