So my mom feeds several stray cats that show up at her house. 2 of the 3 were someones house pets and, she thought, were abandoned. The 3rd is a true feral and she is the momma of the litter of kittens my mom had in her garage.
So last week, one of the friendly "stray" cats comes into the garage for his daily feeding and my mom notices icky oozing on the side of his neck. She grabbed a warm wet towel and some peroxide to try and clean it so she can see what is happening. Got it cleaned up and cat had a huge cut with a flap of skin. Likely from a dog or other animal bite. He eats and runs off. The next night he comes back for his food and she cleans him up again.
2 days later he shows up with stitches. She s like WTF?
Asks the local vet (small town, 1 vet. next town is 6 miles away) if they had someone bring a stray in to stitch him up? She said it was bad enough that they would have likely had to put him under to do. Vet says no.
So now she is wondering. Does this little stray actually have a home somewhere and is lying to her about being a stray to get food and loves?
Silly cat!
I am a bit surprised that an owner would allow a cat back outside after it appears that it was attacked by another animal and still had stitches just a day after getting them.

Cats are the best liars on the planet.
They look you straight in the eye and tell you their tale of woe, how they are homeless and haven't eaten in days and please please love me and feed me and oh pleaseee.
Sounds like the little beggar does have an owner somewhere, or at least another place he goes to eat, but they are pretty indifferent if they let him go back out with stitches.

LOLOL I love it.
I neutered a cat that hung around my house for a week or so, coming and going whenever he pleased.
Brought him home from the neutering and let him loose. Two days later he came back with a collar on.
Your Mom's little cat has a human that apparently cares enough to get him stitched up. Maybe they can't keep him in the house for some reason or maybe it is just another neighbor going the extra mile for a little neighborhood guy.

We will probably never know! I was giggling a bit because she was so perplexed by this development.
Glad he was OK. She pays hundreds of dollars a month in vet bills so I know she didnt want to take a stray in to get him fixed up but she would have if he wasnt getting any better.

Tell her to put a collar on him and see what happens.
When I saw Beau come back with a collar on, I really did LOL.
The funny part was about a month later, Beau moved to my property on a full time basis. I think he was testing both of us out and decided that if I cared enough to have him neutered, he would take a chance with me.

Where I used to live there was a neighborhood stray cat. She was so sweet, whenever she saw me she would come up and rub on my legs and want to be petted. But then I'd be petting her and she'd be purring away, and all of a sudden she'd bite. It was really strange. She never drew blood from me, but I got concerned that some little kid might go to pet her and I wanted to be sure she had all her shots.
I started going down the block trying to find the owner, and about 8 different people said "No, I don't know whose cat she is but I feed her." She had like 5 different names.

There is a siamese cat in my parents' neighborhood who has spent the last, I'd swear, 20 years hanging out on their deck. They used to put food out for him sometimes (he had a collar, but you never know), but one day he showed up with a note taped to his collar asking neighbors not to feed him as he was on a diet. I think he made the rounds of the entire neighborhood convincing everyone he was starving. We later found out he didn't like the other cat he lived with and wanted to be outside all the time.

TFF on 5 names!
My sister has a cat who moved herself into their home a few years ago At first she would just come and sit on the driveway. then when someone would be in the garage she would hang out in there. Over time she was living in the garage and then suddenly she was in the house.

There has got to be some kind of school or something that cats go to before they are born to learn the tricks of the trade.

Or he's terrified of what you'll do to him next if he doesn't live with you. Living with you, he can keep his eye on you. And his other body parts.

Some one who lives in my neighborhood recently hung flyers with a big color picture of a cat and some writing to the effect of "My name is Generic Kitty Name, please don't feed me. I have a home and an owner who loves me. I just like to meander" So I didn't.

I have a "stray" cat (no collar) at the moment. Actually it's been about 3 years now, lol. He comes into the kitchen for food. He's learnt, from me locking him out, to come after my cats have eaten. He initially had them all (except Boss Lady) cowed. Those were bad days but now we're in quite a routine. I don't touch him because I don't want to get fond of him, but he's slowly wheedling his way into my heart regardless. His name is Bad Cat, because he really used to be bad. Plus I think he's the tom who's been spraying all the neighbours' front doors.

Not a cat, but my neighbors dog walks down the street to for something to eat about once a week or so. But LOL, he belongs somewhere, at least they took him for stitches. Has she not asked the neighbors?

If the vet didn't stitch the kitty up, maybe there's a nurse or someone with some medical training in the neighborhood who is also feeding him?

I don't know if I posted it here but I actually grabbed a cat and forced it into my house because it was identical to mine. It smelled bad and I realized it wasn't mine. Mine did not get out like I thought.
I put it back out, he didn't want food, but stood at the door a long time like he was supposed to be here. I believe he has to have a home since he didn't eat. It was just very strange how identical they are and how he just happened to appear at my door watching me take pictures. Several cats have been passing through my yard since my dog passed away. Word must have gotten around the neighborhood.

Had to laugh at the cat biting, mine does the same thing....give little "love bites" while being pet, lol. One day my dd10 walked by him and he reached out and bite her on the butt, lol!
