At this point, I'm fairly entrenched with eBay but believe that Amazon would be a better venue in a lot of respects.
However, I am keeping myself open to a website.

I think that article is using old information for Shopify. www.shopify.com/pricingYou might rename the thread, by the way, since you're comparing Bigcommerce to Shopify, not ecommerce to Shopify I think mup has used both sites, BTW. Hopefully she'll pop in and comment when she has a minute. ETA: I fixed your thread title for you, I think you might get more eyes on it now. Good topic to bring up! I've been looking at both myself.

I read the article and it may be out of date a bit but I think the big stuff was right. I've used a Wordpress website with plug-ins, Shopify and Big Commerce, and have been with BC for over a year. All the details like templates & such aren't that big a deal unless you're super-picky about the look & feel of your site. It seems that I quite Shopify because there was a limit to how many items you could have on your site on the less expensive plans and I didn't want to upgrade unless I needed to. Things like payment gateways doesn't make a difference UNLESS you can drive traffic to your site. But without sales, none of the other things matter.
I will say that I've had a few issues with BC that I had to call customer service for- they walked me thru the "mess" I'd made (long story) and helped me undo a7 fix it. After selling on eBay, we know that good CS is important- I was impressed with theirs.
I think Mup is using Shopify because of Pinterest. She's used both before and should be able to answer your questions.

It looks like now it's unlimited products on all Shopify plans, but the perks like coupons, gift cards etc are what sets the plans apart. Looks like the same on BigCommerce.
Interesting. If I'm reading the plans correctly, Big Commerce does not offer auto upload to shopping comparison sites or google shopping feed on the lowest plan. Shopify doesn't mention it specifically.
Looks like ebay listings don't come over either on the lowest plan for Big Commerce. I think Chap said she was able to import her eBay listings to her Shopify account.

I'm on the basic plan at BC and it says I can import products using a CSV file. But I'm using my account as a sub-domain shopping cart for my apron website so everything I have and am putting on the site now has to be entered manually since I don't have it listed elsewhere. You're right, I think Chap is on Shopify too now.

I have used both. And I recommend Shopify hands down. They were both easy to use. I think Shopify is a bit cheaper than BigCommerce. However with Shopify you can apply for buyable Pins on Pinterest and coming soon, buy buttons on your tweets.
That alone is worth it.

I singed up for Shopify just for the Buy-able pins when they first came out. I think it flopped no one uses them and shopify was not validating any companies to use them. The biggest problem i had was getting my items from ebay to shopify. Their ebay importer was a one time import use and did a terrible job for me. However i really liked the support shopify had. I think the easiest way would be to move to a mulit-channel listing service where i could have my item sent to both Shopify and Ebay. I currently use Inkfrong which does not have that option and I am not sure what multichannel service would be the best to move to for that purpose.

Thought I'd bump this up, in case anyone has tried either or since the OP was made.
