For all things laundry, including stain removal tips and brands.
Homemade Laundry Detergent Liquid. There are a couple of different versions of this recipe floating around. I got this one from Betty, so I knew it was tried and true.
I usually use 1 cup borax, 1 cup soda, 7 oz or so of soap...that's one bar of Fels Naptha ot two bars of Kirk's coco castile or Ivory.
Melt soap in half a gallon of water, add soda and borax.simmer at low heat for a bit. Put 6 cups of hot water in the bucket, stir in soap/soda/borax mixture, add in a gallon of cold water.
Let set for 24 hours, stirring every couple of hours....
Most recipes don't include the last step, or let the soap/soda/borax simmer together for a while, but I find that if I stir vigorously every couple of hours, it becomes a much more homogenous product, and kind of foamy, and so it melts in the washing machine much easier. Otherwise you get a liquid with stringy lumps.
These proportions make a pretty concentrated soap. Some people use twice as much water.

I've been wondering how much it costs to do a load of eBay laundry, and how much it adds to the cost of our items. My eBay loads are never as big as the family laundry loads.

I use this, it is powder. I have not tried the liquid version yet.
2 bars Zote, cut into pieces then put through the food processor 1 box A&H Washing soda 1 large box baking soda 1 box borax 1 smaller can of Oxi-Clean or 1/2 box of Biz 2 large bottles of Downy Unstoppables Fresh Scent (optional)
I mix all this in a large plastic tub with a lid (was supposed to be for charcoal, got it at Home Depot). It lasts a very long time and you don't need a lot per wash. You can add more Downy for your personal laundry if you like, but the 2 bottles is very mild for the amount that it makes. The laundry is never heavily scented at all, just fresh.

I've been using basically the same one as elly, although I dilute it by half. I'm just about due to make another batch and think I'd like to try a powdered version.
Clean, I almost always wash in cold water. Do you have a problem with the powder dissolving in cold water?

I don't have any problem with it dissolving at all and unlike the liquids there is no buildup or messy spills, etc. I use a front loader, the LG one, and it has a fairly strong burst of water that takes all the detergent in. I find the powder just incredibly easy to make.

I use approximately 1/4 cup on a large load. I measure it by using the scoop that came with the machine, its probably closer to 1/6 cup or about 4 tablespoons worth by eye.
