I remember a couple years ago (when I listed last) Sell Through Rate was becoming a big deal. Theory was the lower your STR the lower you were in the searches. People running auctions over and over (like during sales) and had lower STRs were listed lower than those that did fixed price and had higher STRs. Is that still thought to be true or it is as most always assumed, totally random.

I don't worry about it, I want to see a constant level of sales and if I up my listings I expect to see an increase somewhat equivalent to that increase. I don't believe it has much influence on the search, but feel Cassini is more geared toward clicks. So, if your item has 30 views and no one purchased any of that item it will g lower in search. If out of 30 clicks 5 purchased, your item will be higher in search. The same seller could have both items so their overall STR is not controlling the search, but more the sell thru on the item or group of similar items.
That is when the search works; there is also the problem of selective display. You may notice that suddenly your sales drop with no explanation, even a MM sale bring no new views to the item. The week before, the very same item had consistent views and sales. At that point your STR means squat because your items are not being shown in search anyway.
That is my opinion. I have seen it happen over and over, I have learned to just go with it. When my switch is off I organize, list new items, etc. The switch comes back on and I ship. I also notice that sometimes when the switch comes on it must be shown to certain regions because I will have multiple sales to one state, often it being a less populated state so the coincidence stands out. Why would I have 4 sales to Iowa when I rarely have any on a normal basis and only 1 going to CA when its normally much more? Selective display which varies by server.

nope.
didn't then, don't now.
its a lot of hoopla about nothing.
while it appears to be a criteria on GTC type listings, its unclear whether it makes much difference otherwise. either way, its just one of a bazillion criteria and doesn't appear to be heavily weighed.
I really just care about my monthly bottom line.

I never worried about it before. Guess I'll stick with that. I'm thinking of cycling some auctions each week, which I haven't done before so my STR will appear a lot lower than it use to be. Glad it hear it's a crap shoot like always.

I like seeing my sell thru, but I don't worry about it. Since October it has grown every month (17.3% to 28.2% to 29.1% to right around 50% for January), but I don't really use it to calculate anything.

I don't worry about either. Too many other things to worry over.

I don't worry about it much. Most of what I sell, someone is specifically looking for it, so when they find, they will find it. I do think that I should change my strategy of "price it and forget it", I don't mind waiting for a mid-to-high average price on my stuff, but wonder if I could make more over the long run if I sell it for a low-to-mid average price.

I've been thinking lately that all the carp about Casini is for multi-quantity sellers - those selling batteries, mutliple sizes of the same shoe, etc. Because I'm doing a lot of what the "experts" say DON'T do, yet I have sales when I list fresh stuff. Just like always. I sell OOAK. Just like always.
I do watch for upticks and slow downs by brand, size and color, and adjust accordingly, but that's about it. I list, I sell. I don't list, I don't sell. I don't think Casini affects OOAK sellers all that much. Just my two cents worth.

Interesting observation, Val.
The only pattern that I see is what you noted-- I list, I get sales. I don't list, sales drop. I think Humpty had a calculation that she shared, and it made sense to me.
The sales that I get are not just the newly listed items, but my older inventory as well.
I got 8 up tonight, hope to see the uptick in sales for tomorrow. I haven't been listing very much this week due to all the illness, and sales are slow.

Hmmm, Val that's very interesting. I have multi quantities of some items and I've resisted listing them in that format. Maybe I should reconsider on some items and see what happens. Other than that, I don't worry about it either.

I don't worry about it at all. IDK what it even is. The only thing I have kind of used it for in the past is to gauge if I am buying the things that people want. I wanted to have quicker turnover last year. I can tell I achieved it since I store my items hanging in date purchased order. I don't really check the STR to know, but that's the only way it really matters to me.
Re; Cassini, who knows? It may well affect placement, but since so much of Cassini is a huge mystery that is out of our control, I can't really worry about it.
