Black cats are my favorites. I have 3, all of them rescues and all of them fabulous cats.

I had a black cat, years ago, that I rescued. Her name was Kiyoko. She came from one of those cat hoarder stories. I was walking through animal control where they were keeping all the cats. She reached through the cage to get my attention. It worked. I fell in love with her and adopted her that day.

At one time, I had 4 black cats. Now I am down to only one, Bonnie, a shelter cat that was an escape artist from the cattery and would wonder out into the parking lots when she got out.

After my ralf died and my stepfather started his revolving door routine with assorted hospitals I found a sign for 6 kittens in the local grocery store. I called, she only had 2 left. Mom said, 'whatever you do, don't get a black cat'. One was a tuxedo while the runt was a little black one - and it was Mischief Night and I couldn't leave the runt so brought 'em both home. And blackie and whitie are gonna be 13 this year. Almost the last thing my mom said to me was - know who my favorite is? blackie

I've always wanted a black cat. I have a gray one right now, figure I'm 50% of the way there :-)

The first black cat I shared a home with was Cicero, the cat of my ex. He was the cat that shook hands, gave kisses on demand and loved being vacuumed. And he was dog friendly. He was a fabulous cat.

All my prior cats but one was black. I was looking at a black cat when I adopted Hootie. The black cat wanted nothing to do with me, and Hootie followed me all over the cattery. It was a no brainer who was going home with me.

I'm astonished that they're less likely to get adopted! I'm superstitious, but not about cats as I know that each and every one is a creature of beauty and wonder. I had a lovely old stray for about six years. Someone had dumped her with a bell on her collar and she couldn't hunt, was skin and bones. I've never adopted a black cat because there weren't any around at the time. I assumed they were super-popular. But perhaps not...

From working at the shelter, my theory is that the black kittens don't stand out as much when grouped with the other kittens in a black rolling cage or in the silver metal cages.
They just seem to blend in and don't catch the eye like the kittens with brighter colors or color combinations do.
The same with black cats in an open cattery. The eye tends to skip over them and go for a more colorful presence while the black cats kinda blend in.

Supposedly black dogs have a harder time being adopted, especially LARGE black dogs. People think they're fierce looking.
Yeah, right. Those people have never spent time with a black lab I bet.

Val, when I was young we had a female dog named Sam. Sam was at least one half German Shepherd and was black with brown markings. And was small. I never knew that people feared black dogs until I took her for a walk in Center City Philadelphia. I heard people say, "Whoa, black dog" and then crossed the street.

I used to have a white dog and a black cat. The only safe colors to wear were gray and plaid.

The first cat who ever owned me was a pitch black cat with pumpkin orange eyes. My aunt was so superstitious that we had to put her (the cat!) in the basement if Auntie came over.
And BTW, it's not pet hair on your clothes, it's "accessories"! lol

I too have a black haired beauty! It's a shame that some will do them great harm. They don't even allow adoption at most shelters around Halloween. Some even use them in rituals to kill.
I always advise cat owners to keep them indoors if possible, especially around October!
Thanks for posting this Titus!
