So I am finally looking for a computer. I need one that will support Word and Excel if possible, or something comparable.
Do not want to get Win 8 and am looking at Win 7.
I see there are 2 versions, Home Premium and Professional.
Anyone using either of those and have any major likes and dislikes?

Mines not professional, so I guess it must be home premium. I've been happy with it.

I have pro at home and on main work computer and our laptop at work, which I use only occasionally, has home premium. I'm not sure I see any differences in operations, capabilities, etc.

I found some comparison charts online and the differences don't really seem that big to me.
I guess I will go with whichever I can find a better deal on.
Beulah is tired and wants to retire so I need to get something before she goes belly up on me.

Beulah is my cranky old computer.
I figure if I can adjust to a smart phone I can adjust to a new computer and OS.

Win 7 isn't all that different from whatever version of Windows you're using now.
Windows 8, however, IS different. So you should be OK with either version of Win 7.
For the Excel and Word, I didn't want to buy the software as I didn't have a couple hundred to blow, so I went with the monthly subscription to Microsoft 365. I get excel, word, outlook, powerpoint and a few other things and can load it on up to 5 machines. Machines can be PC, Mac, Android, iPhone or tablet, any combo. Not a bad deal since I needed it for 2 laptops and a mac at the time. It's $9.95/mo.

I have the Word and Excel discs for Win XP, wonder if they would work with Win 7?

I don't know if you want to go to this much trouble, but you can download a Win 7 Upgrade Advisor. It's really meant for upgrading the same computer, but it will tell you whether or not your current Word or Excel (and other installed programs) will be compatible. I have Win 7 Home Premium. I've been happy with it. But I did sign up for the free upgrade to Win 10. www.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/windows-10-upgrade You have a year to do the upgrade after they send you the download, so I'll be waiting to hear how others like it before I do it.

I have Windows 7 Home Premium and Word 2003 and Excel 2003. They both work fine, but every time I start either program up I have a pop-up window that asks me to click to accept the license agreement.

Word and Excel 2003 (and actually Word 99 - I have some really old files in that format) work fine on my Win 7 Pro. The pop-up I get with Excel 2003 spreadsheets that I used to get sent was compatibility issues might cause some features to degrade - I never found it made any difference and I used Excel pretty extensively, though not for complicated calculations. The entire Office suit runs fine on Win 10. You can also download Open Office. www.openoffice.org/

I have Home version & Excel & WORD 2000 & it's all fine. I occasionally get some missing dictionary error in WORD, but it doesn't cause any problems.

Thanks for all the great answers.
I'm really happy I can continue to use Word & Excel as all the rental paperwork and forms are on those and I don't want to switch to and have to learn something else.

I actually bought this version on eBay when I got the new laptop because I hate (hate) the newer versions and it was like $30.
