Our 6 year old black lab Zoey went running outside to run the fence to bark at a dog on the other side of the fence this morning, came in limping, layed down and wouldnt get back up. We thought she may had broken her leg. Luckily it wasnt that.
She dislocated her kneecap. Hubby had to take her to the emergency vet and get x-rays. They couldn't get her kneecap back in at first, but after they gave her something really strong for the pain, she relaxed enough that it popped itself back in. She is now on doggie motrin and light duty for 2 weeks.
She is now sitting next to me drooling massively and whining. Poor thing.

The poor thing. So glad it wasn't broken, but it must hurt like heck.

Be very glad that was all it was. I initially though...omg she's going to say torn cruciate. And in dealing with surgery and healing/recovery...which takes 6 months...I am so glad to hear this is fairly short term. Still doesn't take her pain away now poor baby.

I was actually prying it was broken down by the paw instead of a hip or torn anything. I feel very lucky it was what it was, though they did say if it happens again surgery will be necessary.

So glad it wasn't more serious. Poor sweet pup, soon she'll be on her paws again.

Ugh. We took her out to potty, which she needed to do. She laid down in the grass and when she stood up, she wouldnt put weight on her leg again. I really hope it is just because it is sore and not that she dislocated it again.

Dumb question, but can you split the leg, or put some sort of support on it (sort of like a knee brace)?
For a minute I thought this topic was about our Zoe (from the title).

After she rested, she was able to put pressure on it. I gave her the motrin and muscle relaxer.

Me too LOL. Now I know why Aimee always spells "my" name wrong. BTW, the Zoe in my name comes from a pup too. Oops & I think you mean splint.

I went and looked up the meds. Tramadol & Rimadyl. It is an NSAID but not motrin? Here is the funny name story. I spell her name Zoey because my oldest's middle name is Zoe. But it is pronounced Zo (no ey). So to me, Zoe is Zo not Zoey. Which is why I am always spelling it ZOEY. Sorry I spell your name wrong. I know exactly how it feels to have people spell your name wrong. I will try to make it right.

I'm pretty used to no one ever spelling my name right , for all my years on this planet, it's no big deal at all.
Please keep us posted on your baby! I feel so bad for her, but I'm glad it corrected itself.

Tramadol and Rymadil are ok. You do want to watch for liver issues with Rimadyl. It has been known to cause damage in Labs. Mine did fine on it.

They only gave her 3 days of it, and talked about liver damage. She said 3 days likely wont cause problems. If she needs more for some reason, they will do liver tests.
