My father is having mobility issues. It took several falls before he would consider a cane and now he's having a hard time going up and down the basement stairs. I had suggested a chair lift and he's finally decided it might be ok. Does anyone know anything about the different companies that make and install these?

I would check to be sure medicare or his insurance won't chip in for the cost of the lift. They buy the scooters so why not the chair lifts.

Unfortunately Medicare won't pay for one.

Check craigslist. A friend got her mother's stair lift there and got a good deal.

I know that they are very expensive. When I had my two story house I had hip issues and really had a difficult time getting up and down the stairs. I had a turn in my stair and the estimate was about $10,000. We decided to move to a one story house and then I had a hip replacement. Now that I am better I am still grateful for my one story.

I had looked into them about 8 years ago when SO and I were trying to make a decision on whether or not MIL could come live with us in our 2-story house. What I researched was about $8K at that time, on the low end. Couldn't swing it.

His stairs are straight thank goodness. I've looked at several and the base price seems to be between 1200-1800 but I doubt that includes installation. Craigslist is a great idea! He also has TriCare for Life (retired Navy) so I'll check with them too, they are amazing in what they pay and pay for. Thanks everyone!

Hoping you are able to accommodate his needs within his financial means. Medicare + TriCare for Life has been getting a bit fickle and starting to charge for more things now under NoBamaCare!

I am amazed that you got a quote for 1200 - 1800. That is so inexpensive. I wonder how much the installation would be. What a big difference in price I got and Bets got. Good luck.

They came on Friday. OMG, this is another thing seniors can get ripped off on. The phone quote ended up not including anything and this guy said 3800. We negotiated down to 2800 but I wasn't happy. My father was so I guess that's all that matters, he can't wait for it to get installed. No insurance covers it.
