I was mowing by the pond today and these 2 big snappers have taken up residence. I guess that's why my koi are missing. I think the 2nd picture is some mating going on. The remainder of my afternoon was spent trying to make a trap. I'll finish it up tomorrow and put my plan into action to relocate them.

LOL at turtle porn.
Sorry about your koi, but they are kinda cute. I'm glad you are relocating them.

You should have seen them fighting. I've never seen anything like it. Biting and tussling. Didn't realize until I got home and googled it what I had actually seen. I'll post another pic if I catch them.

You had better get on that trapping thing or you are going to be catching baby snappers too.

First glance, I thought this thread was titled Strippers in my pond.
Looks like it wasn't too far off.

Yikes! We have turtles in our pond, but we haven't seen any snappers. I would like to put koi or even goldfish in our pond, but my husband likes to fish in it.

I finished my trap today and bought a chicken neck and put in it. I got it into the pond but at last check it was empty. I hope they take the bait or I'll have to figure out another plan. They are much to big for a net. I'm not brave enough to grab them by the tail. I'd let my son shoot them but to get this large they have lived a long time. Plus I don't want turtle innards all over the pond.

They like Spam if you need something to lure them.

Oh Debs how awful! Where do you live? We have never in 20 years had a turtle come to our pond. Mike's koi are over 3 feet. He would have a stroke if we had snapping turtles eat them. He put wire on top for Osprey that live on the river.

I live near Atlanta Ga. The koi weren't big. I had purchased them to eat vegetation and help keep the pond clean. I had actually begun to train them to come when I put food out. Poor little guys.
Newest update. One small snapper in the trap today. Those big guys haven't gotten in there yet. I think they weigh at least 20 lbs each. I found out that the guy who put our fence up considers them a real delicacy. I've contacted him to see if he's interested in capturing them.

My son came last week and they were hiding out. I saw this one again and bless his heart he came over after working all night and caught this one this morning. Yes I know he looks like he could be on the swamp people television series but he's a sweetie at heart. He is letting him go in a big lake near their house.

We guessed about 40lbs. I know it scared the mess out of me when he waded in after it and even more when he pulled it up hissing and snapping.

I keep coming back to look at that big sucker. Your son is a brave man to get in there with that monster. No wonder your koi disappeared.

Is the other big snapper still there or was that the one that you caught in the trap?
Just seeing the turtle in the pic skeered me.

Picking them up by the tail can injure them badly I love our snappers - they're so prehistoric looking.

I cannot believe the size of that turtle. I am sorry about the koi too, thats a shame. Seeing the size of the one your son caught, its a good thing its out of there.

Fashion, He is supporting his shell. He is a true animal lover and would never do anything to hurt them. When he was a little boy I encouraged him with his love of snakes and other exotic animals. Now he raises and sells snakes that are big enough to eat deers and hogs. I wish I had put the kibosh on that hobby!

WOW... that is scary big! I would make sure the other one is caught/gone before putting more fish in the pond. We have turtles here but never one that big in a yard.
