Has anyone ever done that? I want a fountain for my patio, but the ones in my budget are all gray or tan, stone look. Blah. I want to paint them COLORS. Most are either concrete, resin, or concrete/fiberglass. Can that finish be painted and the paint hold up in the elements? Stuff like this:

I suppose you could paint the resin or fiberglass ones. They do make spray paint for that.
The color you choose will determine if it fades or not. Pinks and reds fade pretty fast here.
If I painted one I would probably do 2 coats, plus a clear top coat to help preserve the paint from the sun and the water.

I know there is paint for concrete too, but I don't think the color selection is as bright. I was thinking a sun protectant overcoat.
My walls are a clay brown stucco, so gray stone look just won't cut it. Bleah, bleah, bleah. Shoot, even just painting one plain old white would work.

They make paints that will pretty much adhere to anything. As Shirley said the brighter the color the more it's going to fade. Depending on what the fountain is made of is going to determine what kind of paint you need.
Anything that is made with resin is going to have some expansion and contraction so to keep the paint lasting the longest look for a marine type paint that will expand and contract with the fountain. Concrete while it will expand a little, minute bit can take more of a regular paint. Also keep in mind they now make stains in many different colors for concrete so you could look into this.
I have NO IDEA if the paints would contaminate the water so if birds drank from it would they be affected.

Concrete can be a really bugger to paint. I paint resin and fiberglass yard stuff every season and it does well. I'm in the middle of painting a dog 2 shades of blue. It's to go with my purple cat. But with the water in the fountain you would need the extra coat and the sealer.

I don't think I'd paint the inside water part, just the outside. And not that particular fountain, that was just a sample to show the texture. Ones I'm looking at don't have an ornate top section, so leaving the water flow/bowl areas unpainted wouldn't be an issue (or even noticeable unless you looked from the top). That's a last resort, though. If I can find a cute colorful glass bowl/stand birdbath, I'll go with that. Maybe I'll wait until they go on sale or clearance so I won't feel so bad if I mess it up I'm tired of fighting the sun/no sun areas of my patio so I'm going with garden accents for color instead of a bunch of flowers.

If you aren't going to paint the inside of the water bowl then it should be a piece of cake.
They have some great colors at Lowes, that is where I usually get my spray paint.
Turquoise would be great, but then I am partial to blue.

LOL! My bistro set is turquoise. The mesh sling chairs are hot pink, the drink table is striped in hot pink and orange. I'm impressed at how well the furniture has held it's color, as they're outside all year. I don't cover them for the winter.

Here in the SW we have to have our bright colors.
I have a round wrought iron table I need to sand down and then I'm want the handyman to spray it turquoise.
It's so big we are using a can of pain and a paint sprayer to do it so he can get in all the nooks and crannies.
I gots to have my turquoise.
