What a wonderful project! I wish the people at my library were nice enough to do something like that. The part about all of the kittens who've found homes through that program actually choked me up a little.

Cool! And very smart I wish Valencia County would do that. The azzhats have a kill shelter that holds pets for 3 days only, and is only open office hours for adoptions. HTH can you adopt if you work a regular job? I hate Valencia County.

Anytime I have to go to the county building I always stop by to look at the kittens.
They have a great enclosure for them and really encourage the adoptions. it's wonderful to see so many getting homes.

I've just realised why I never really liked any of my office jobs - no kittens!

Hopefully other areas will pick up on the idea. It sure does help to get adoptions.

I was wondering, though, are they the kind of adoptions you want? Maybe impulse-buying a kitten is not such a good idea for some people.

It's no different than visiting the shelter and adopting from there. Most of this state is rural. Putting the kittens in the city courthouse exposes more people to the kittens, makes it easier for adoptions. More traffic at the courthouse If those same folks had to go to shelter (which may or may not be open hours convenient for working adopters), those folks probably wouldn't make the effort. Another county here does the opposite. Shelter is not easy to get to, and used to only be open M-F 8-5. Now they've changed to Tues-Sat 9-5, but it took years and a lot of negative publicity to get that change. This other county is also a kill shelter, and latest stats are 3884 impounds, 2398 euthanized. That sucks. The county is part of NM's largest metro area - if they did what Dona Ana does, the adoption rate would go way up.

They can't just impulse adopt. They have to go thru the same application process that they do at the shelter and meet the same requirements.
And I think most of the adoptions have been to county employees, who got to see the cats everyday and get attached to them.

What IS the adoption process there? I get the feeling it's more stringent than here, where you fill in some forms, hand over the money and take the cat. Although I think some shelters now are starting to have home visits. Scary! My house is a cat's dream, full of carpet to claw and half-empty boxes and stuff to jump on - but I don't know what a human would see. Beyond chaos!

It depends on the shelter. Some just have you fill out paperwork and pay, others do the home visit. One I know of that several friends have adopted from doesn't do home visits but you have to go there (foster, private home) and meet the pet, then bring in your existing pet(s) for a meet & greet. Then you get to take the new pet home if all works out. If she gets a bad vibe from someone, she'll do a home visit before letting the pet go.
