I scheduled a pick up for today for 5 packages. I have one-day handling.
I said the packages would be on the porch. We have a long driveway and I can't see the mailbox from my house. It's down the driveway, across the street and down the street some more.
I figured the carrier would be running late with the bad weather. At 4:40, my husband, after plowing the driveway, went to the mailbox and found mail in it, but my packages were never picked up.
I called my post office and the PM said there was a sub on today. After explaining the importance of having my mail picked up and scanned, she said she would come out and get them. Please note, that it's about a 15 minute drive, it had been snowing all day and it's almost closing time. Sure enough, she showed up.
I felt really bad, but my husband basically told me to get over it. They screwed up, they should make it right.
For all the bad raps the Postal Service gets when they screw up, it deserves mentioning when they do the right thing.

The regular route person at my house and one of my offices are both great. The only screwups are when the subs are on the route.

At least you have a regular guy on your route.
My route has been open for over a year and it is always different guys. I think whoever gets through with their regular route is then assigned to my route if there isn't a sub that day.
I would walk my packages to the post office before I would schedule a pickup.

If you deal with little post offices, my understanding is they are eliminating the postmasters in alot of them and they'll have clerks and postmaster reliefs working them. I think with clerks, the postal service has more flexibility and can move them around where and as needed. This isn't necessarily a good thing.

I've never scheduled a pick up, I wouldn't even know how to do it. But it's a small town and it only takes 5 minutes to get to the PO. I usually drop things in the box outside though, we have the GRUMPIEST crew of PO workers ever. I get tired of smiling and being overly friendly to frowners.

I love my post office. Some of the counter people have been there since I started selling seriously, I guess about 10 years? Back when I had to take all international to the counter They all know what they are doing, and I rarely have issues. *knock on wood*

I learned to schedule pickups because it's 5 miles each way in traffic for me. So I do, whenever possible. I only had a problem with that once, with a sub who didn't scan my pkg after promising to do so. And apparently it waved a red flag because the regular carrier came to the door the next day and specifically asked whether the pkg had been picked up. I complained to him about the no scan issue and he gave me the name and number of his supervisor in case I had any more problems. That surprised me because the regular carrier has always come across as having an attitude towards women. Reminds me of the Foreigner song, "cold as ice."
I also leave a note on the mailbox when scheduling isn't possible (after 2 am). So far, only 1 missed pickup via that method.

My post office forgets my pickups every few weeks. Calling them is futile because it always goes to a recording. I've never actually had anyone answer.

The phone at my post office is "busy" 24/7.
They do not want to anybody about anything.
