eBay has changed something simple and made it complicated. Buyer returned $40 item with $5.95 shipping. I refunded her the $39.99 and kept the $5.95 shipping fee via partial refund directly from paypal. Go back to ebay and go to resolution center. I have two choice: ran out of stock or buyer changed mind. Hmmmm. Well, buyer changed mind, I guess. But that says that if I click that button, it will fully refund the buyer. What? How do you cancel a transaction these days? ETA: buyer sent question but did not "start a return" which is where I guess I should have had her go. I think I just screwed myself out of my fvfs. grrrrrrr

I don't think that refunds the shipping. Are you No Returns? That's how it worked for me no returns. It refunded my FVF's automatically. But if yours doesn't, you can always call Ebay to refund them, they always do it.
Let me see if I can find the thread of how I did it last time, I liked it cuz it was automatic & I didn't have to call Ebay. But I've called over the years to do a FVF refund & have never had any trouble. Thing is, if you accept returns, your options are all different I think.

Okay, I'll give it a go and see what happens. The difference is only two bucks so, if they take the shipping back from me, I'll only be out an extra 2 bucks and that is, after all, a small lesson. Off to try cancellation.

Just at two day mark now from when I opened the cancellation case. Buyer has not agreed but paypal did not take the unrefunded shipping away from me when I opened the case. I'll have to wait (I suppose) another 5 full days to close unless the buyer agrees and I guess she can't be bothered. No problem. I can wait it out.

This is another one of the ways eBay is coercing us to sign up for Managed Returns.

I caved and signed up for managed returns, or hassle free returns, or whatever nonsense they call it because I was fed up with dealing with CS reps telling me I had to refund original shipping to get my fees back.

Home - I just refunded a buyer. She returned a shirt for fit that had $2.76 shipping. It had been a while since I did a refund, so I decided to follow the directions that ebay sent me in an email.
I used to refund through paypal, but this time I went to the Return Details page from "my ebay" and clicked "refund buyer now", then a page came up with the option to add in the original shipping or not. I did not.
After I refunded, I got an email from ebay that said they will credit the final value fee and the PayPal fee.

Kel, thanks for the explanation. However, since she did not open a return request, only sent me a message, I could not refund through eBay and had to go to paypal. She has failed to respond to the request to cancel the transaction in the resolution center and it has been more than 10 days. I'm just going to let this one time out at 30 days and see if eBay refunds me or not. It will be a $4 experiment but we shall see if it works or not.

I just go to Ebay and choose cancel transaction, then you are prompted with the reason. I choose buyer changed mind or there was a problem with the address and it pops up to refund them the bid price. I select refund and it says they are contacting the buyer etc but after a few minutes everything updates and I get the you got your fees back letter.
Another boardie posted how to do it that way and it's worked flawless so far on returns. Even ones that were my mistake I've been able to do it this way.

I think the difference here is that the woman just wrote Home directly, she didn't open up a request to return with Ebay.
Because I found it simple as can be & the FVF was returned automatically. But she can always just call ebay. This isn't a complicated call, I've done it a number of times & they always do it & it's an under 5 minute call, most of which is spent waiting for them to look up the tx.

I was going to call them today. Last night eBay closed the case on their own and said I hadn't refunded the buyer. So no FVF credit.
