Latest update from the vet. Felix isn't doing as well as first reported. He's urinating, but not as much as he should be. They're going to try to catheterize him and flush out his kidneys. It seems, though, that he's going to need a bit more medical attention. We'll just have to wait and see.
So the GoFundMe page is up and I wanted to give the link. My daughter put together the whole thing. Thanks for letting me post this.

I would bet that he was dumped because his owners knew he was sick and didn't want the vet bills. The collar didn't have any owner info on it so no reason to take it off.
May the pox of 10,000 locust be upon them and their car break down with repair bills that will send them screaming in pain.
Thank you so much for caring for him. Poor little guy.
Definitely do a GoFundMe and I would also include pics of vet bills.
Where do you live?

Thanks everyone! Do you think I should start a new thread on this to get the GoFundMe word out there? I don't want to come on too strong or be inappropriate, but I do want to maximize exposure. And since I'm not on FB, or any other social media for that matter (yeah I know, I'm a dinosaur!), I don't have any other way to get the word out. DD is, but her contacts are mostly her high school friends. And DH, well forget it. He's still using a 15 year old Nokia phone that he's had since before our son was born, no social media skills at all.

Oh, you're so nice Mup. I'm really uncomfortable doing this, but will have to put on my shameless face...

I thought donations could be made via Paypal. I don't have a Wepay account and am wary of giving my credit card info. Can I make a donation through your Paypal?

Can you post your Paypal in the Secret Clubhouse or send me a PM with it?
Don't feel uncomfortable. That kitty would be dead by now if you had not stepped up to the plate.

No, you and your lovely family are the best. Who else would take such good care of a stray kitty. I hope you keep him.

Well just got another update from the vet. And it's not good.
Kitty's bladder is filling up again and he's blocked. They can try to put in another catheter, and if that doesn't work, they'll have to empty it with a needle again. Our options at this point are more exploration/ultra sounds to see what might be blocking him, and go from there. And they recommended a PU operation as well. Or to put him down . The cost of the operation thru their office is around $3500, maybe more. We could have it done at another facility which isn't a 24 hour emergency facility for about half that. But that would then mean another $600 to keep him over-night with the other procedures mentioned. Can this get any worse?
So right now we're crying and trying to console one another and figure this thing out. This really really sucks!

I'd like to send something through PP too.
Your daughter's FB friends may all be in HS, but HS kids often have jobs and disposable income - even a bunch of $5-$10 donations would add up and those kids know how to network on social media. I'd certainly have her put it out there. I'd also try contacting the local news - mine loves to showcase GoFundMes for stuff like fertility treatments, a good samaritan act seems like a better thing to promote. We also have a rescue group in our area that raises money to help other rescues but they might also help an individual in this kind of circumstance - maybe there is something like that in your area? I'd call around and see if anyone can direct you to some resources who might be able to help. IMHO your first vet did anything and everything they could bill you for, especially considering they knew they would likely send you off to an emergency vet. My cat's KD was diagnosed with bloodwork, the ultrasound, I believe would have helped to pinpoint WHY she had it (kidney was malformed, undersized, etc.) but it wasn't necessary in the 3 or so years she was treated for it, mostly with fluids and special diet - again, I think they are just wanting to bill for as much as they can.

So sorry to hear this That's such a hard decision to face. But you have trust your instincts, and do what you feel is best for the cat. If he's really suffering, letting him go may be the most compassionate choice.

Even surgery isn't a guarantee though and it's more pain. You have to do what you feel is right but for us it wouldn't even be an option to put $5,000+ into a stray cat and putting him down would end his suffering. I think everyone and everything deserves to die a dignified and pain free death when possible. Don't feel bad if that is the option you choose. It's better than him dying a stray in the snow.

I just emailed everyone I know and asked them to donate if possible, but to absolutely pass the link on and put it on their Facebook pages. The more exposure you get, the better your chances.
I'm surprised at the vets not giving a better discount for rescues. Most places I've lived, they do.

I don't even know how to begin this. We had to make a difficult decision, and it's not what we wanted to do, but it was the only thing we could do. We had to put Felix down tonight . With his prognosis and no guarantees, plus another minimum of $2000+ in medical fees, we just could not swing it. It's a sad night in the all4saleny house tonight. Our hearts are broken. In 48 hours we got pretty attached to this little guy. Seems stupid, huh? We all had a good cry, but had to say goodbye.
The outpouring of support and understanding & the well wishes and donations by so many of you has touched our hearts. We are overwhelmed. Please know that we are grateful to each and every one of you. I'm so sorry it had to come to this. I don't want to be overly dramatic - well any more than I might already be - but thank you all.
ETA: And just to add, I can't update the GoFundMe page with this news tonight since my daughter created it and she's gone to bed. I will have her do it first thing in the morning. Thanks again.

No it's not stupid, animals are like babies. One look and you instantly fall in love. You and your family should be proud of what you did. You allowed him to be loved and cared for in the end. That is all any of us hope for when it's our time.
