I don't know why they don't just pull the dups.

I'm gobsmacked! For once, an announcement that makes total sense and will improve search results.
Fashion, they may continue to pull the dups, but they're also saying that a seller that violates the dup policy will be punished with reduced visibility for ALL their listings.
While I feel bad for those, like Jeremy, whose business model depended upon the free auctions, I can't help but feel that the change in that policy will also significantly contribute to cleaning up this site by not having identical items being relisted at auction every three days for months.

Finally they do something that is actually an improvement.
As a buyer I hate seeing dups when I am searching for something. When I can finally get search to bring up what I want then I see listing after listing that isn't what I want, and usually full of KWS too.
Hopefully people will start shopping more when they can actually see what is listed without all those dups cluttering things up.

Agreed. As a buyer it is such a pain to sort through the duplicates. Especially the Chinese carp. I rarely buy anymore due to the annoyance of just trying to find something.

It doesn't make sense to me. THey have a no-dup policy on FP, so why don't they just enforce their policy?
BTW, the double down loophole is still in there.
So, I don't get this at all. If you don't allow dups, then don't allow dups.
This is completely illogical.

This is ebay we are talking about, logic has never been their strong suit.

I would be fine with it if they fix the multi variation listings. I can't list my items that are identical other than size because the listings are not appearing properly under search. The "select" for size does not appear. The listing will show something like, size 4, 2 available. When it should say "select" 10 available and allowing the buyer to click the arrow to choose a size. It gives the appearance that the size the buyer wants is sold out. I've had numerous complaints about it in the past. I prefer the mvl's since when one sells the listing moves up in search. To see what I mean go to search and type in "gymboree ice cream sweetie". Open a variation listing. It won't say "select" where it is supposed to. It's really weird because it doesn't effect all of the gymboree listings. It goes by line.

I get around the Chinese crap by checking the "US" location (or North America) option. North America gives me Canadian sellers too.

It would be nice if that always worked Val.
Too many of the Chinese sellers have opened US accounts even though they are in China and ship from China. I report them but there are so many and they just come back with another name. Plus lots of US sellers see the Chinese ones getting away with it and are doing it too.
This will be a great change.... if they actually enforce it. They don't enforce the dup rules they have now so it's probably a lot to hope they will enforce this one.
