Any NE members need a storm buddy for the upcoming storm?

I just saw where some serious snow and bad weather is forecast for the NE. Seems some areas are preparing for possible power outages. If anyone needs a storm buddy to check on your listings/sales/etc should you lose power, send me a PM and I'll send you my cell, you can text if things get bad and you need help.

If any one else wants to offer help as a storm buddy, please post here.

I'm in the NE but we have a generator. So far we have been able to maintain the store through outages. If anyone needs any help, let me know cause I'll be stuck on my mountain top doing nothing else.

We're gearing up for this 'blizzard' they're talking about. I went grocery shopping this morning at 9:30am - on a Sunday - and it was already mobbed. I then had to go to Costco, and it was even more crowded. I saw someone buying a generator. I almost bought one too, DH mentioned he was thinking about getting one, but I had no idea what to buy.

Is Juno the name of the storm? I get so confused.
According to Weather Underground we might get 4 or 5 inches. According to NOAA we're getting quite a bit more. But the NOAA forecast is based on the airport while the other forecast is from a weather station in my hood.

I had groceries delivered today. The delivery men were telling me the store was mobbed.

They said its going to be horrible, like 2-3 feet. I am also in Long Island. I went to the store and got a few essentials. As long as there is coffee, I am ok

Yeah, they keep upping the snow amount forecast.  Last I heard anywhere between 12" - 24".  And from Clean's post, she heard 2-3 feet!  DH is already having anxiety attacks over having to clear our 150+ foot driveway. That plus losing power.  Other than my kids fretting over their midterms schedule this week, I'd really like a snow day or two. I'll even help DH with some snow-blowing!

i'm a normal person, who thinks if there is 3 feet of snow you probably should stay home.  and that if you run out of bread, perhaps you should have a can of soup for lunch.

I just hope we don't lose power. I cant be cooped up with my tribe without TV.

Titus, I'm in Bensalem and I think we are getting more snow than that.  I was going to thrift this morning but decided to stay home instead.  I fell about 18 months ago and really injured my ankle so I'm taking no chances.

It's boring here though when I'm cooped up a couple of days.  DH works tons of hours.  Just me and the fur babies!

Speaking of soup, we are on weight watchers and I made a great little low calorie dinner last night.  Tomato soup and pizza logs.  You make them with egg roll wrappers and mozzarella skim cheese sticks.  Also turkey pepperoni and sauce.  I dipped mine in the soup incredible!!

I'm in South Philadelphia, you know, lots of tiny streets and no plowing.

Weather Underground gets reports from numerous stations all over the area. The station I use is Dickinson Narrows which is near 5th & Dickinson. They also have them in Port Richmond, University City, all over really including the burbs. Their forecast is for around 8 inches or less.

Nope. I don't have a car. I don't even have a driver's license. And I'm very blessed/lucky in that either a neighbor shovels my walk or someone knocks on my door looking to make some spare cash.

I am NOT normal in that 3' of snow means you get in your truck and go out and screw around.  Yes I am just an oversized child and my truck is a bigger toy.

I am NOT normal in that I will NEVER in a million years understand the mad crazy dash to the store when snow....no matter how much.... is mentioned. I mean do people really have no food in their houses?  I mean what's the absolute worst you would be unable to get out and to a store....a week maybe? And people buy enough food for armageddon. For me this defies logic and boggles my mind.

I mean IF I were to be snowed in/under something I could probably go at least a month without even thinking of starving. And ya I buy half to a whole beef at a time and even if I take that out of the food equation I could still go a month. Ya by the end it might be rice and crackers and a glass of water or some odd thing like home popped popcorn and a can of soup but I wouldn't starve. Heck I could even start taking pot shots at rabbits and squirrels in the yard to stave off hunger and get a meat source.

Someone PLEASE explain to me WHY people think they are going to die every time a snow storm of more than 1/16 of an inch is mentioned.

Thank you, harley, because apparently I am not normal either. I used to be, as I live in New York City, and we used to not get hysterical. As much as Rudy Giuliani was a terrible, terrible mayor, he did a good job after 9/11. The oaf we have now is fricking Chicken Little. The grocery looked like we live in Poland today, no bread. The gourmet grocery, well, you had to stand on line to get in. Nope, not gonna.

The post office closed early, so I arrived there and couldn't mail my eBay stuff. They are not going to re-open until WEDNESDAY. I asked the USPS maven who was locking the doors at 2:00 why and she said "We have to make it home." Oh, excuse me.

Here's the message I sent my buyers when I got home: "Hello. I wanted to let you know that our post office was closed early today, due to the blizzard, and we couldn't mail your package. They say they will re-open on Wednesday and we will mail it then.
Apparently, neither rain, nor snow, nor bad weather in general will allow them to deliver the mail or even keep the post office open. :-)

All the public and parochial schools dismissed at noon today and all after school programs were canceled. We barely got an inch of snow.

I wondered why schools had so many snow days; when I was a kid we might get one if there was a foot or more, otherwise we were open. I was told by a teacher that the school boards are terrified of lawsuits that might happen if there were student/teacher injuries from snow.

DO NOT get me started on what a candy assed society we have become.

I remember going to school one day.....high school but still....and it was cold. For whatever reason the boiler wasn't working right. Did we get sent home? Oh hell no. There was an announcement over the intercom that students would be allowed to wear their winter coats if they were too cold. Other than that...tough noogies, suck it up. And NO parent sued the school because their precious little child might have gotten frostbite.

Of course back then there wasn't air conditioning either. When it was hot we sweated in those rooms and again NO ONE died. Now even with air if there is mention of a heat wave they may close the school.

Exit and enter 20 years later when my daughter is going to the SAME hs I did and they close the school because it MIGHT get too cold on such and such day.

Another fine example....I live 3 blocks from the HS. 3 blocks. YES my daughter WALKED to school. She actually pitched a fit when I would not allow her to drive to school. Are you freaken kidding me?! Overflow from the parking lot was a block and a half away from our house and she wanted to drive?! Oh hail NO!

I had a parent one time who told me I was abusing my daughter by making her walk in the winter and when it rained. I layed into her and flat out told her that that's what umbrellas and winter coats are for.

I think the reason the schools and these places do such wussy things is because we are such a litigious society. I would be ok with kids wearing a jacket in class because it was chilly, but I am sure someone would be on the phone to their lawyer and sue the school. Thats probably why they have to do it, and it just helps even more so to make it a nation of wusses.

I took the train to school alone and survived. I walked 4 blocks to the train no matter the weather, as long as the school was open I had to go, or at least supposedly go because I used to cut class sometimes. I got home first so I got the mail, I kept good grades, wasn't caught too often.

Our school didn't use to close for bad weather unless it was super bad but a few years ago it hit fast, they knew it was coming but ignored it. I went and picked my kids up from school at noon because the roads were getting bad, knew I wouldn't get out of my drive if I waited. Well school waited until 1:30 or 2 to release and they wound up with over 40 students that they couldn't get home and the parents couldn't get there due to impassible roads. They had to stay in the gym, with help from the community they managed to get them all home the next day but they never made that mistake again. So far this year though no school days missed. Last year we missed 22 I think. We haven't even had enough snow to count this year. Love it

sheeeet--we could survive the zombie apocalypse (at least, all 5 seasons of the walking dead). it was JUST shoprites can-can sale--I have a lifetime supply of pasta, beans, canned tomatos and assorted other things. i could probably make it 6 months on junk food alone, before we had to break into the "real food".

so no, i don't get these people either. i don't understand how a household has a one bottle of Perrier and a stick of butter in their fridge. dont these people get hungry at 12:30 pm for a bowl of ice cream?? i started to say that i might understand if one lived in the city and had a bodega up the corner and ate out every night, but umm, no-sorry....i still dont get it.

maybe i have a food hoarder problem along with an ebay hoarder issue, but at least i'm prepared.

i will never understand the pressing need for bread or milk in a storm.

but you can count me in on one of the households who REALLY needs to buy a generator and never gets around to it--we have an inverter for small things, but i could use a small one-then i would officially be a prepper.

in another note: this is the lamest "bulls eye" ever--if we have 2" so far that's saying a lot. i am happy to report that the schools did have the courtesy to cancel tomorrow around 7pm tonight, instead of calling at 5am....so i get to sleep in. yay me!

I grew up in South Texas on the Gulf Coast. People raid the grocery stores before tropical storms and hurricanes. We lived in Exton in Chester County (west of Philly) for 15 years and when a snow storm was coming people did the same. We had a 30" storm sometime in the mid-90's. They dumped so much snow in the Schuylkill River they almost dammed it up.

I'll be thinking about ya'll. We're back in central Texas where the forecast high is 77 Tuesday & 80 on Wednesday.

For the life of me, I don't understand the mentality of people who wait until an impending disaster is about to strike to load up on essentials, either. My DD (PA) got caught last year without batteries and couldn't find any just prior to a snowstorm that left her without power for 5 days. She's also the type to stock up on non-essentials like paper towels, but keeps minimal food supplies. DUH. I sure hope she learned a few lessons after last year's storm!

Oh, and the real "kicker" was her SO had planned on charging their cell phones through his SUV. Well, a big tree came down directly on it and totaled it! Fortunately neither of them was in it when it happened.

Peek - We are on weight watchers now for about 6 months. Doing great. If you want I can direct you to some really good low point recipes. This one girl name "Emily Bites" has fabulous recipes using eggroll and wonton wrappers. Delicious and low. Just let me know! Maybe Val would let us start a weight watcher thread.

Mikakitty I'm the exact opposite. I grew up in Delaware Co (Collingdale) but have lived in the city since 1975. We don't have much parking space saving. Certainly no one on this street does it. It happens more in Chicago and Boston.

Oh, I remember the blizzard of 1996. It was one of the few times my employer, a big bank, gave us a snow day. My bus route didn't run for about 4 or 5 days so I was taking cabs to get to and from work.
I think it was the EPA that stopped the dumping of snow in the rivers. The plowed snow, with its salt and other crud, was polluting the river.
